USC v. UCLA

rogers-rose-bowlA reader emails this morning: “When did USC last win a Rose Bowl? Yesterday. When did UCLA last win a Rose Bowl? 1986.”

It’s always about the rivalry.

  1. I like to say that USC has played in 10 Rose Bowl Games since the last time UCLA won one.

  2. James Franklin 49–30 in 6 seasons as a head coach. His average is 8-5 per season. Why does this knucklehead continue to promote him as something more than average?’

And who cares about UCLA on a day like today?

    • That includes time in the SEC coaching at Vandy of all places. That’s a pretty good indicator as to future success.

      • 25–15 at Penn State, 14–11 in conference, 1-2 in bowl games. That’s a 3 year indicator that the guy is average. Most PSU fans wanted him fired after last year. I’m so glad USC didn’t hire him.

        • You mentioned 6 seasons in your original post and now you’ve cut it to 3…ok. Wasn’t Penn State under sanctions when he took over 3 seasons ago?

          • No, the sanctions were rescinded in 2013 and he took over in 2014. Bill O’Brien was there during the sanctions. And I didn’t cut anything to 3 years. You mentioned his days in Vandy as some sort of accomplishment. So I pointed out just his Penn State resume.

          • Penn St was not entirely off sanctions when Franklin took over. The program was still feeling the effects of “free agency” and Franklin has as good a resume as just about any 6 year head coach in the country. Parse the years however you need too, but he’s on a good trajectory with his career and he was a good hire, period.

          • “In 2014, the NCAA reversed course. It rescinded the postseason ban, restored scholarships, and re-credited Penn State and Paterno with their victories from 1998 to 2011.”

JF was hired in 2014. There were no sanctions as an excuse for back to back 7-6 seasons. And I will take Clay Helton all day everyday over James Franklin. Franklin’s character is very questionable. Just look at his departure from Vandy. SW has an obsession with him and hated the Helton hire.

          • 3 seasons in, coming off of sanctions and they are Big 10 champs with a young team that will be better next year. He’s done a great job at Penn St and he’s just getting started.

None of what I’m saying has anything to do with Helton or Wolf, but I agree with the two points you make about them.

          • Because he jumped ship at Vandy after he lied. He left that program in the dust with a rape case against 4 of his players. And his first year, there were no sanctions. Not sure what is so hard to understand.

          • Apparently what’s so hard for you to understand is that Franklin is a good coach and Penn St made a good decision in hiring him. Who wouldn’t leave Vandy if offered a job at Penn St? I’d say both parties did well for themselves. Obviously you think he is a poor coach and a bad hire, but you’re just wrong, clearly wrong.

    • The NCAA burned the Penn State program to the ground in 2012 and Franklin managed to get them to the Rose Bowl. Remember when 15 players including running back Silas Redd left? That isn’t average.

      • The sanctions were rescinded before James Franklin arrived. The sanctions were rescinded in 2013 and he arrived in 2014. Bill O’Brien was there during the sanctions and rebuilt the program.

  3. ucla is officially a dirt program now. USC always owns L.A. and the Trojans and Darnold are the talk of the college football world.

Yet jealous little gutty Trolls still populate this USC blog because they can’t stand USC’s enormous success. Bye bye little gutties. Have fun with the Chimp and Rosen-on-the-Run. Hah, hah, hah.

    • USC (Helton, Darnold & Co.) has just painted The Chimp into a corner – he has no options but too stay at UCLA and get beaten badly in the coming years. Nobody will be knocking at his door and USC will once gain own California recruiting.

      • The baby bruins really are stuck as cheap imposters on their own field.

Can you imagine trying to recruit for the little gutties with that “monster” USC just down the freeway and constantly taking victory laps in your crib? Hilarious.

  4. 30 years since they won a RB and what, 20 since they last played in one ?

    • 1993 was the last time the ruins soiled the field. Wisconsin just ran roughshod over the ruins in that game.

  5. Let us put this into perspective. They are 16-18 in bowl games. They have 39 All Americans. They have played in 11 Rose Bowl games, with the last one being 1993. They have won 17 league titles. And their mascot’s names are Joe and Joesphine. Since 1929, and that is 88 years, that is all they have accomplished. Okay, I will give them their credit of a 1/2 of a national championship and a Heisman because the committee did not want to give it to a junior, at that time. That sums up their program. And Scott wonders why their even is a rivalry. It is called total domination from USC’s perspective. There is no rivalry.
Squatter, don’t waste your time. Your program is toast, cooked, done, over, and in shambles. You can do all the eight clapping you want but it will not help. You need a coach and players, which ugly does not have.

    • This (PA St.) was a moribund program until they won a miraculous Orange Bowl over KS back in 1968. They were an ‘independent’. PA St. didn’t join the Big 10 until 1990 – non-Big-10’s not allowed since 1946.Ever been to State College-PA? It’s 10 miles south of I-80 in the middle of bleeping nowhere and for that program to become what it has is incredible.

The horrific mistake PA St. made was allowing Paterno to have such total control of that: school, town and region – he should never ever be respected for his cover-up of that monster Sandusky.

For me PA St. is one of the legacy programs lower 5 with NE, Miami, Mi/TX and FL/FL St..

Great game plan by Franklin – the Nittany Lions came to play and that’s because their coaches got them ready.

  6. The “we run this town” taunts now seem all the more rediculous and amateur hour. I didn’t like it and thought it looked desperate when Enfield tried to make a splash when he first got here by bad mouthing UCLA BBall. Don’t know why UCLA FB fans have always tried to compare themselves to SC. Just do your own thing and enjoy the ride when you have the occasional good year.

As an SC fan, I honestly don’t dislike UCLA BBall. In fact, I kinda like their team this year. But, their football team has always been the team I dislike the most in all of sports for above stated reasons.

    • I don’t care for ugly ruin basketball because of the cheater, Johnny, “they call me, ‘Cheetin” Wooden. He knew Gilbert was buying players and he said he did not know. If he knew how the team tied their shoes, then he knew what was going on and he turned a blind eye. Gilbert had heart attack on the way to the Grand Jury. He was going to spill the beans on what happened.
If ugly admits they cheated then so be it. Until then, no, I don’t care for them at all.

      • Agreed. Wooden was a gangster – had his goons run Tark outta LBSU because Tark had the gall to compete. Gilbert did all the dirty work so Wooden could keep his hands and saintly image clean.

        • Wooden never lucked out when winning the 10 NC’s.

I can’t recall Wooden ever starting anybody named Gilbert. Problem with the bozo u BB program was/is they focus just on beating the Bruins.

The Bruins on the other focus on conf. titles and tournament seeding. Upshot, in 17 tournament appearances bozo u has gone ONE & DONE 9 times.

Fact is UCLA has won more RB’s than bozo u has won BB NC’s

          • Squatter, admit that Wooden cheated. The NCAA knew, the L.A. Times, knew, many a program in the nation knew. If ugly did not cheat, then why don’t they build a statue of Sam gilbert right next to Wooden’s statue? I will tell you why, because it would bring back memories of Johnny cheetin’.

          • USC has more baseball championships that ugly’s basketball team. Now what?

  7. Just curious, how many BB NC’s has bozo u won.

Did you say o – forever? Relish your lucky win, and give thanks that Franklin is an utter FB imbecile.
