USC Morning Buzz: Cal Unexpectedly Fires Coach Sonny Dykes

Cal fired Coach Sonny Dykes this morning, according to Fox Sports. A possible reason is Dykes interviewing for other jobs like Missouri last year and Baylor this year. As usual, the key question now is whether Cal actually makes a good hire that would make them a tougher opponent for USC. Offensive coordinator Jake Spavital is the interim coach.

    • What do you plan to do with the water you want to remove from the IE swamp?

  1. I’d heard that over the last 2-3 years Dykes kept the players and Cal admin guessing as he openly courted getting hired elsewhere – finally bit him in the back end.

    • Just read it. I thought the wording of his statement was interesting: “I’m looking forward to getting fired at UCLA this upcoming season!”

  2. You know Jimmy Sexton is on the phone pushing, Steve Sarkisian, because the media’s pumping him up right now, and he may want to ride that wave. But the conference needs leadership type of coaches, not weak minded people with fancy offensive ideas

  3. Cal sucks. They had their chance a couple years ago and now the kid that gave them that chance is sucking it up in the NFL.

  4. It’s not fair that most comment sections don’t allow people to post about dykes, due to unnecessary censorship.

  5. They could of fired Dykes week’s ago, hell a month ago if they were really upset about him interviewing for other jobs.

They wouldn’t of done this at this time unless they already have agreed in principle with another coach and are just working out terms.

Miles doesn’t strike me as a Berkley kinda guy,( and why wait till now?) That leaves Kelly, who is currently living in the “Bay Area.”

Cal has a good back, and a couple of decent wide outs. Might not take him as long as you think

    • Kelly would be a perfect fit there and the program would have instant credibility….

  6. My question is, what is Cal looking for? What type of offense do they want? They seem to have an offense that runs a traditional run and pass offense. If they bring in Kelley, then he needs to recruit his offense which will take a year or so. Does Cal want to wait for that?

    • I don’t thinkCal has any say in this mess – they’re lucky to get anyone who is skilled enough (recruit and coach) to make a real impact as well as make the admin understand it’s another 2-3 years of bottom feeding until they see any real progress.

      • Just like ugly, it has been so long that they accomplished anytime by, if anything at all, that the administration is apethitic towards football. That is the money maker for them

        • True but if I were a player I’d rather be a grad from Cal then that four letter mess. In fact The enemy (Cal) of my enemy (Stanford/ucla) is my friend.

          • I will cheer for both the Stanford Indians and the cal bears, but may ugly rot at the bottom of the league each and every year
