UPDATED: Clemson cuts the lead to 14-7 with 6:15 left in the second quarter.

UPDATED II: Alabama’s defense gets a turnover and the Crimson Tide get a field goal to take a 17-7 lead.

UPDATED III: Clemson comes back with a TD and cuts lead to 17-14. Looks like Steve Sarkisian is going to have to actually work.

UPDATED IV: It’s a 68-yard TD pass to the tight end! I wish Steve Sarkisian did that when he was at USC. Alabama leads 24-14.

UPDATED V: Clemson is not giving up and wide receiver Mike Williams catches a touchdown pass to once again make it a 3-point game (24-21). These really are the two best teams in college football.

UPDATED VI: Clemson scores a TD and takes a 28-24 lead with 4:38 left. Does Sarkisian have an answer?

UPDATED VII: Oh my. A trick play and then a great run by Jalen Hurts runs for the TD and Alabama leads 31-28 with 2:08 left.

UPDATED VIII: It never ends. Clemson scores on a TD pass with one second left. The Tigers lead, 35-31.

        • Good for him. He’s in his 9th season as the Head Coach of Clemson. He better be making College Football Playoff appearance yearly since Clemson only has to worry about Florida St each year and maybe one surprise team from the ACC since it’s so weak of a conference. Are you starting to become another DrainTheSwamp? I hope not. Great for Clemson. USC has a 9 game winning streak which is currently the longest in College Football at the moment and beat the North and South Champs of the Pac 12, and just bear the Penn State Nittany Lions in the Rose Bowl who beat the #3 Ohio State that was shut down by Clemson. Helton has this team in a great position to go all the way next season if they continue to stay hungry and with the mindset that they have more prove. The talent is there. This was the combination of a First year Head Coach/Staff and a first year starting QB that were learning on the fly and they overcame the 1-3 start/decision to start Max Browne while beating two top 5 teams. Helton/Darnold/the rest of the team are gonna take that next step into college football elite next season. USC is just getting started.

          • Nope. The defense saved Darnolds butt against Colorado. The Defense stepped up and played tough against Washington. Heck, the defensed even played just as good or even better than Darnold against the Bruins. Darnold is great but this team played up to another level. Yes he was the spark that started all of this but our team beacame a team.

    • UCLA did go 4 – 8 but, we didn’t lose to anyone 52 – 6!.

    • There were more facts connected to this National Championship game that USC had going into the Texas game. Last week i noticed that if Saban wins this title he will have did what Carroll failed to do by winning 3 straight, and Alabama most likely would’ve beat our 34 game streak. Clemson had the runner up in the Heisman like Texas and Vince Young, Bama was the preseason #1 Clemson was #2 like USC and Texas. There was too much history tied to that 2005 game that made it seem to go against Alabama. People were sick of Pete Carroll and USC and wanted a new champ. I still think Kiffin gets the job done if he’s on the sidelines for Bama. But Saban and Kiffin will always have to live with whatever went on behind the scenes for the rest of their lives because it cost Alabama a third straight Natty.

      • It’s not all on Sark, Hurts’ inability to see and complete passes damaged the team too. But Sark’s lack 1st down plays, especially in the 4th qtr, wore out Bama’s defense

        • I think that Sark and Hurts may have been instructed to play it safe by Coach Saban. Once Clemson got the lead, they opened it up, but then couldn’t stop Clemson and had some stupid penalties. I doubt that Sark had full freedom under Saban.

          • I think Saban might be a bit upset with taking the lead with 2 minutes to play and not being able to keep them out of the end zone. A big kickoff return, 2 stupid penalties and Mike Williams did them in.

      • Due to 8 three and outs and 2-15 3rd down conversions by Sarky … D was tanked , Clemson ran 99 plays

        • That’s a valid point. However, that doesn’t explain their poor play on special teams as well. They had nobody that could cover Williams. Offense put 31 points on the board. That should have been enough. Plus, Alabama lost Scarborough. Clemson has a great DL as well.

    • What’s funny is that Sarkisian and Kiffin both have been involved in the loss of TWO National Championships for their teams: in the 2007 BCS game and now the 2017 Championship game. Pete Carroll and Nick Saban now know what idiots they had calling the offensive shots for them in these games.

      • In all honesty to fire Lane Kiffin a week leading into the final game of the college football season and rematch of last year’s classic shootout that Lane Kiffin called and beat the very same Clemson team is up their with throwing the ball on 2nd and goal from the 1 in the closing seconds of the super bowl. Sorry Pete! But seriously this was a matter of Saban poking his nose in the offensive side of the ball trying to prove that he’s the Jerry Jones of the Bama team. Kiffin probably said “I got this!”
        And it cost Saban a 3-Peat and now Alabama, college football, and 4-8 UCLA Bruin football team (coughing) LMAO see it first hand that Winning the National Championship three consecutive years is a huge task and only a few chosen can even reach one (cough) UCLA will never be one of them. But Alabama had a good run. Respect to both teams for playing a great game.

    • Your full of it. Alabama 52 USC 6 my unfriend. Saban has how many National Titles at the Crimson Tide. Loved Carroll, but team started to slide his last two years. Cutty Sark was the culprit. Man did I over rate his play calling ability, too many bubble screens, lack of use of Tight End Howard who killed Clemson year prior. One good trick play done in desperation time. Tide scored too soon at the end was my thought at the moment. One question to ponder, maybe crazy. Should Hurt have stopped at the one or two yardline on his td run to use a couple of more plays and clock before scoring go ahead points? Smith-Schuster did same vs. Colorado when his score would have iced the game giving double digit lead.

  27. This game shows us things would’ve been very interesting had Helton started Darnold from the beginning of the season. Yes, we probably would have lost to Bama in the opener, but Darnold should have learned from it and adjusted to the real game situation earlier to possibly beat Stanford and Utah and end up with just one loss, which could have placed us in the PO. I still think it was Helton’s biggest mishap to bench the best player in the team at the start of the season. Happy that we’ve finished the season on a very high note, but it’s certainly intriguing to imagine the season could’ve ended even better. Much better. Alright, alright…let’s win a natty next year!

    • Alabama ditch their QB after two quarters and he transferred after game three. That’s how you go to the playoffs three straight years, coach is cut throat. I think the stage was too big at the beginning of the season in Dallas but it would have been interesting to see us play at the end of the year in the playoffs. This year is the year before the Trojans win it all!!

Clemson rocked it tonight. Hurts just isn’t good enough with his arm. Would love to see Sam get a crack at Jalen in the National Semis next year.

  31. Great game! Congrats to Clemson for beating Bama. I realize my view is heavily biased, but I think Darnold will be just as good if not better than Watson. I’m looking forward to next year!

  32. I’m glad Clemson won. I’m tired of seeing Bama win it every year. But that last play really did look like a pick play to me. They need to re-define what is a pick and what is not in the off-season. Otherwise, I don’t see how you can stop that play. If the outside receiver is allowed to actually block the D-back that is covering the outside receiver, then all the inside receiver has to do is to go inside both of them and by the time the other cornerback gets to him it will be too late.

      • I’m not feeling sorry for Bama. I just think they have to put in some definite parameters on that pick play. The schools don’t know how to run it because they don’t know what they can do and what they can’t do. Sometimes they call it and sometimes they don’t call it. It makes you think that even the officials don’t understand it. I don’t feel sorry for Bama but it could happen to us too. In fact, it did happen a year or so ago against Utah. That last play where they won the game was a pick play. It should have been called and we should have won the game.

Both teams ,like Rose Bowl, can be proud of effort and like RoseBowl difference came down to q/b…both good and one real good…plus…Wash game not a lack of anything or coaching ,just Bama q/b having a tough go vs a real good defense…he is an 18 yr old true freshman,in the championship game. Wonder what Saban is thinking now? He is still a great college coach.

  34. Congrats to Kiffy and Sarky … they were able to lose title games despite having the greatest offensive players ever at USC and greatest defensive players at Bamer ( though USC 2008 was better ,,, and Sark lost a game for that team too).

  35. I have to say I think Sark was not good for AL. His play calling reminded me when Kessler wasn’t throwing downfield but sideways. It was like there was no rhyme or reason to his play calling all night. Perhaps Saban needs to reexamine his hire at OC.

    • I would have ran the ball more when the lead was down to 3. He was throwing it too much. Left too much time on the clock..
