USC Morning Buzz: It’s Time For The Friday Notes Column!

ADOREE.CAL.TDIt’s time for the Friday notes column, where I lead off discussing how important it is for USC to land some big-time recruits before Signing Day so this recruiting class isn’t known for its three stars.

And I mention this in Pac-12 scheduling logic: USC plays at Cal and UCLA plays at Stanford on Sept. 23. That ought to make hotel rooms even more expensive that weekend in the Bay Area. Full column

  1. SC backing off from 2- to 3-star players is nothing surprising. The stock of the team has considerably gone up since last year and the beginning of ’16 season after the phenomenal finish with a 10-3 record and the Rose Bowl victory, and most of the commitments were made months ago, if not longer. It’ll be very interesting how many of those 5-star players we could end up signing. I’m hoping at least 2 to 3.

    • Flipping those blue chip guys won’t be so easy, but it’d be great to land on at least a couple of them.

    • Just 2-3 5 stars and you’ll be happy ? That’s awful ! This is the hottest team in America, it’s the one getting all the positive ink and Helton & Co can’t seem to flip anyone.

He better get DL’s or it won’t matter what Darnold does.

    • The landscape of USC football has changed drastically from the humiliations suffered at the hands of ALA and STAN.

USC’s now back among the elite in the college game and has reset its targets on better talent. What could possibly make more sense!

Great day. Trump’s in and those libt*rds are finally out. Kind of like ucla football – in the dirt.

      • I predict that USC is going to start winning again. They will win so much that some fans will call up Helton beg him to lose a game, but Helton will say, “No, we’re gonna keep on winning. This is 2017.”

Is it possible to win if you have *** players? Boise State nearly made it to the national championship a while back with two and three star players. Some players had no stars. Since then, three Fiesta Bowl wins.

USC has great players. They will win games in 2017.

    • Everything I read and hear.People I talk to, mention how extremely hard and focused on the big picture the staff is.Whether it ends great we will see. These are 17 year olds in and era driven by social media.I believe we will have an excellent 5-10 class.
If the staff grabs, flips DT Marlon Tui from Washington this weekend, the back story is fantastic. If you were to look at the Husky blogs right now Everything is about USC stealing him. They are ballistic.!!!
Our early record hurt with some big recruits who bonded with other programs. However 2018 will be a 1-3 class.

  2. About the cost of hotel rooms in the bay area. I used to stay in Daily city which was cheap enough for a young guy. Now that I have more money I can stay at my Time share. By the way the two schools in question are farther apart than UCLA and USC are. I don’t see a problem.

    • But many fans of both schools stay in SF and take the BART across the Bay for the Cal game or drive down to The Farm. Those rooms will be at a premium now.

      • Since when have bozo u fans shirked paying 10 – 20 x the going rate for a motel 6 reservation?

In fact many bozos brag loudly they paid $500.00 night for a Motel 6 closet and $1K endzone seat to support bozo u loss.

Besides 22, you can always see a Fat Cat bozo coming from miles away – Big Black BMW, half drunk, dressed in bozo u Ripple and Puke color Sweatshirt adorned with foot and half SUCC fonts.

          • I doan’t think so. I speak entirely for myself and Chuck does the same for himself.

As oppose to any bozo u, scarlet flush- faced, Fat Cat, who let’s the # of Fireballs ingested do the talking.

  3. I doubt if there’s a difference between a four, and five star recruit, but I do know, the upcoming class better be able to control the line of scrimmage . If not, then that coaching staff better have one heck of a player development, program .

  4. Friday notes column, where you lead off with a negative thought, like you always do. You are at least consistent.

  5. A new era starts today, and it’s a sad day for all the little snowflakes and brain dead liberals.
Goodbye to the filthy third world illegals.
    Hello wall.
    Goodbye to onerous regulations.
Hello to having to go to work instead of getting a free ride off the hard working middle class.
    Goodbye to bad trade deals
Hello to having jobs stay in this country
And Goodbye to the worst President this country has ever seen, yes, even worse than Jimma Carter
DRAIN THE SWAMP AND MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN !

    • Too bad Charlie Bucket doesn’t come around here no more. He wouldn’t like reading that!

      • Poor Buckett, you may have to get a job for the first time in your miserable life

        • No I doan’t think so. I’m so stinking, filthy rich, I exercise daily in my bespoke platinum pool.

Just for the record, I was pleased to stiff the “rump” campaign. I doan’t need Amarkica great again, just socially benevolent.

  6. Hotels? Yes this is important. There are enough hotels between these two universities that nobody will notice any occupancy issues. It is like the blogger is not even trying any more.

    • Really. SF is a major tourism destination with plenty of facilities to more than handle two college football games. The Blogger is really getting lazy.

      • It the Dr. Rachel Maddow of Inside USC ever went up for the game she would know that isn’t true. Nice hotels are at a premium in September in SF.

  7. The writer is actually showing how detached he really is from University he covers and went to. Mostly derogatory remarks do not make for pleasant reading. Is this a sign Scott Wolf is on his way out, the quality of journalism sure appears so.

  8. Anyone have a good idea of where USC’s recruiting is headed “position-wise”? Is Helton paying any attention to the depth needs of both lines, especially defensive?

    • They want to bring in 5 DL in this class that’s a pretty good indication they want to build depth.

    • According to what has been posted on here it looks to be closing really well. As our new president says, it will be beautiful and you are going to love it.

      • What a great Inauguration! Did you notice that Trump’s supporters didn’t boo Obama, as Obama’s booed Bush 8 years ago.

        • Astounded at the crowd down the streets. It is a day of grace, they can go to battle with each other tomorrow. Great day for USA.

        • Tell me 22, was Woody “Dunce” Johnson awake.

There’s a rampant rumor about that Woody want’s the “rump” to pardon his best pal Bernie “30%” Madoff.

      • Helton is building a recruiting wall around southern California, and UCLA is going to pay for it.
I hear we are recruiting bigly. We have recruits, the best recruits, you have never even heard of.

  9. Right now the Trojans have 16 verbal commits (with McKenzie as a blueshirt) so that would mean 7 available scholarships (based on the projected number of 23 rides). Here’s a guess as of today of how those spots could play out:

    WR Joseph Lewis
    TE Josh Falo
    OL Austin Jackson
DL Jay Tufele, Myron Tagovailoa-Amosa (or Brandon Pili)
LB Levi Jones (my longshot pick)
DB Isaiah Pola-Mao, Greg Johnson (or Elijah Blades)

    Per GP

  10. “I lead off discussing how important it is for USC to land some big-time recruits”…thank you Captain Obvious. I was not aware schools needed to land big-time recruits…

There goes Wolf again, he previously complains against the recruiting services’ ratings and that 5/4 stars are overrated, now says we need 5 stars…

    WHAT.

INDIANA JUST STOLE A 4-STAR RECRUIT FROM USC.

    WELCOME TO BLOOMINGTON, JUWAN BURGESS.

  12. As of now USC has 4 three star commits (per Rivals, the fastest for me to check). In Carroll’s 2003 class there were 2 two star and 13 three star, 2004 had 2 two and 3 three star, 2005 had 5 three star and 2006 had 6 three star guys. I think things worked out pretty well in that run. Every signing class is going to be a mix.

  13. southern cal rah rahs have nothing to worry about when it comes to hotel rooms. After you get drunk out of their minds because of the beat down at the hands of the bears and get arrested, you can be guests at the city jail.

Just make sure you get across the bay bridge before you get drunk because you guys are too soft to handle the Oakland City Jail… You all will be right at home in the San Francisco City Jail. Many from the Castro district will welcome you in!

  14. Wasn’t the recruiting class that started it all chock full of 3 stars like Sean Cody and Mike Williams? I’d love to get all 5-stars but we’re not there yet, and besides, self-contradicting Wolfie consistently said the past 4 years that stars and rankings don’t mean much of anything.

  15. I think it’s safe to say a few posters want to know what the heck Helton is doing in recruiting?
