It’s the three-week anniversary of the Rose Bowl. I’ve heard Adoree Jackson’s ankle is still not 100 percent, which makes it a good time to remember something from the game that is easy to overlook because of Sam Darnold’s heroics.
USC outscored Penn State, 17-0, in the fourth quarter despite missing Jackson and linebacker Cameron Smith (ejected) while cornerback Iman Marshall was in-and-out of the game after being hit in the head. And this was a defense that already allowed 49 points.
Now maybe it was Penn State’s playcalling too. Why you would throw two straight times in the same spot of the field at Leon McQuay is something people in State College must still be talking about.
And let’s face it, Darnold’s touchdown pass to Deontay Burnett is something the coaches never dreamed up. But all these things made it a “perfect storm” for a comeback. And it’s worth noting 21 days later.
Yes Wolfy. The Rose Bowl actually happened. Even more to your surprise, USC actually won.
The only unbelievable part in this is your constant man-love you show to James (No-such-thing-as-my-players-committing-sexual-assult) Franklin and how Sam Darnold is a one-man team. Of course, it’s finally sinking in to you that maybe USC has 21 other players that maybe, JUST MAYBE have played a role due to their athleticism and the coaching staff.
But of course you are still in denial that this might be the reason and instead blame it on Penn State’s awful playcalling.
Typical Wolfy. Can never certain realities but would rather accept alternative realities. I heard the Trump administration is still hiring.
Exactly. I’m sure that Atlanta and New England are only in the Super Bowl because of Ryan and Brady. Coaching and other players did nothing. Yes, it is true that it is very difficult to be a championship team without a great QB, but there were plenty of great QB’s that never played in championships or Rose Bowls.
Dan Marino comes to mind first for me.
I heard Chuck Norris ask Sam Darnold for an autograph.
#heisman
And Darnold gave him 50 and offered more. lol
#Don’tDissChuckNorris
Chuck Norris says Sir before and after when speaking to Mr Darnold.
I sure hope Mr. Norris doesn’t read your comments. For your sake.
You show a photo of an injured player as you recall a Rose Bowl victory?
Lol!
Maybe because the picture was of Adoree Jackson who was mentioned in the blog entry? Another misdiagnosis by the Dr. Rachel Maddow of Inside USC.
I saw how easy it was for the Penn St. WR to shake #1(Adoree’s replacement) the previous play… That WR had to have gone back to Sharkey and tell him throw the ball back to me I can get open. Now having said that, was #1 really out of his element, looking totally lost, or was he told to look lost so the safety could come intercept the ball? Which is what happened the next play. Was it a decoy? If it was it worked.
Just watched the game again over the weekend. For the first, the DB slipped. We were fortunate that we had pressure on the QB, who threw off his back foot to allow time for the safety to get over. For the second, the QB made a terrible decision, but he had been throwing bad passes to 12 all day and 12 was catching everything. McQuay made two great plays.
Good point. He only looked for 12 on almost every play. Their last one was fatal.
They threw to the tight end first, who was being covered by Jack Jones. The second time, they threw to the wide receiver, who was also being covered by Jack Jones. They were obviously picking on Jones.
the Rose bowl was a great game and a great win. Now get ready for the next game.
fight on
Scott Wolf, its all nice to talk about the Rose Bowl victory and all, but 3/4 weeks later now its about recruiting…. let’s talk about who’s being approached, being talked to, who’s leaning. You can’t talk enough about what is on everyone’s mind today (except maybe the Super Bowl). Recruiting!
Didn’t we see Wolf, or someone who looked like him, marching in Washington over the weekend? It makes sense because he cannot fathom the idea of USC coming back from a 17 point deficit to win the Rose Bowl, and NOUW not accepting The Don is the President.
Did he have on a pink pussyhat?
The three week anniversary of the Rose Bowl, this reminds me of a middle school couple celebrating their three week anniversary as a couple. Does anyone think Scoopin Scooter ever celebrated a three week anniversary?
He never had one, nothing more that 15 days.
I’m pretty sure there were several great plays by Penn St that “the coaches never dreamed up”. What a silly statement.
First the word anniversary means years as it has the prefix annum. So there cannot be a weekly anniversary. Next the game unfolded in an interesting but believable way, so yes I believe it happened.
Finally, looking back, I can also believe the final Penn State pass attempt as being logical in the eyes of the coaches. It appeared the receivers were able to get past our defense for most of the second half. That they didn’t when they needed to is a matter of record.
The Darnold to Burnett TD was something that the coaches never dreamed up? That’s BS Wolf, and it proves how little you understand football.
That play was designed for JuJu in the flat (and he was wide open) with Burnett to dragging the CB across the middle, but the design of the play also leaves open the possibility of finding holes in the zone. Burnett saw a window because the safety snuck up a little close to the line, Sam saw the same thing and the TD happened. The play WAS DESIGNED THAT WAY, it is not like Darnold drew it up in the ground.
It’s idiot writers like you that turn coaches in such churlish interviews, because they have to deal with the stupidity of sports writers. Imagine business writers without any knowledge of business. Movie reviewers who have never seen a movie. Now imagine Scott Wolf. Same thing.
That’s exactly what happen….Fight On
Nice to know Birdcage is still burned up about USC’s monumental victory over PSU and Franklin, his hero. It’ll never go away for the schmuck.
Sorry Birdcage. Just another big USC victory you to have to stomach and live with forever.
You can always hope USC falls flat on LOI Day. If they don’t, you can always talk about how USC recruits itself.
Jack, it sure seems Wolf has been on a downward spiral ever since Hillary got beat.
Trump Derangement Syndrome is epidemic. Imagine the gloom today on the ruin campus.
Very good point. The Hillary burial stuck a knife deep in the heart of the libt*rds and massive numbers of her little gutty sycophants. Birdcage is obviously still dealing with the wound which will only get worse as Trump continues to tweet his way to Presidential uniqueness.
It’s like a deep in-your-face every day to Birdcage and his crowd. Love it.
Darnold noted in the post game presser that Burnett simply (slightly) modified the play-based on a window of opportunity the play itself created…
Good play call…stellar execution. Let’s throw props they deserve to be thrown…
Hearing the same! NICE VF…very NICE!
I haven’t been told who it is, but all I remember this also happened the same way with Fred Davis upon him coming to USC ..
Lets boil it down to who WANTED to enroll early. Bam.
I saw some of the chatter and asked my intel. He was saying that the EE is a done deal and wanted to settle in at school and then announce but, MT’s school ends friday. Lol .. I guess we will find out!
It’s worth noting that you don’t understand that human beings play sports and that human beings are the most complex and unpredictable organisms on the planet. Therefore, it stands to reason that football is not a game played with linear equations dumkopf! As for McQuay, it’s not the playcall, it’s the QB’s ability to make the right read…furthermore, McQuay has been a weak link most of his career spastico!
i have faith in USC for this Rose Bowl game from the beginning till the end. Penn State is a great team, just USC is better. Fight on, Trojans ! you will be in the playoff game next season
Having not watched the game in three weeks, the dominate things I remember are:
-The refs were terrible, including terrible calls that kept two of the drives alive in the hellish 3rd quarter.
-I don’t know why Penn State didn’t just hand it off to Barkley every play.
-It felt like the only thing stopping SC on offense were the refs. There was a bit of poetic justice in that last drive though, with the calls on PSU, finally. You were almost hoping for a play to break down, because of how good Darnold becomes at that point.
– Justin Davis deserved more touches this year. He broke off SC’s biggest run that game (and took a horrible hit) and I remember thinking man this guy is probably one of the most underrated RBs at USC in the last decade or so. He cuts so well, he’s a great pass blocker, and I really can’t remember a single play where he screwed something up. I bet in 3 years he is starting on an NFL team.
-Stevie T pushing the center into backfield every play in the 4th quarter. What a performance.
-The play of the game was Ajene and Hutchings stopping Barkley on that critical 3rd down late in the 4th.
-The use the TEs!! More of that next year!
Penn State’s 4th Quarter Offense Punt, Punt, Punt, Interception. Ya’ll haven’t given USC’s Clancy Pendergast any credit. A PERFECT COORDINATION OF THE DEFENSE THROUGHOUT THE 4TH QUARTER, CLANCY PENDERGAST. THE GAME BALL TO CLANCY PENDERGAST AND KUDOS TO HIS PLAYERS !!!!!
