USC Morning Buzz: Washington Can Sleepwalk To Pac-12 North Title Next Season

USC.WASHINGTON.2016.2Some of you think I am too critical of USC. Well, Washington should be glad I do not cover them. I’ve already mentioned what a travesty I think their non-conference schedule is next season: Rutgers, Montana and Fresno State.

Rutgers is the worst team in the Big Ten. Fresno State is so bad it brought Jeff Tedford out of mothballs and Montana is . . . Montana.

If you want a reason to cheer USC, UCLA and Notre Dame as a group, it’s because they are the only three schools in Division I-A (Football Bowl Subdivision) teams never to play a Division I-AA school (Football Championship Subdivision).

Further, Washington does not play USC. Gets a bye. Has UCLA, Oregon, Utah and Washington State at home. Who cares what Huskies turned pro early with that schedule?

I’ve always applauded Washington’s hiring of Chris Petersen and always criticized Pat Haden for the way he handled his interview of Petersen. But it could be a long season hearing pundits fall over themselves talking about what a great job Petersen is doing next season. With that schedule, who wouldn’t?

  1. “Some of you think I am too critical of USC.”

No, I think you are a troll monger. You look for the negative in everything just to get clicks.

    • Critical is good any balanced reporting will at times be critical. The month of September was a train wreck. Baldy never acknowledges any current positives.

    • I can think of 11 teams in the Pac12 that are glad Wolf does not cover them. Critical is fine as long as you give a team props when they succeed. Troll Monger is perfect title for Wolf.

      • Also wasn’t it Wolf who said making judgments on schedule strength in January was Idiotic? His short term memory is shot.

“USC Morning Buzz: Why Do People Say Schedule Is Tough In January?”
So you can only judge other teams schedules in January but not USC’s. Unless of course if fits the “critical” Wolf narrative.

  2. Personally, I think Washington is pretty average. And Flow, furthermore, who says Stanford can’t turn it around after a decent year?

    • You know Stanford is not going to stay down long. They recruit too good of players every year. If they get their QB playing well enough…..

      • Truth. Especially the last 8 years or so – They always seem to hang around, even in their “down years.” Which pisses me right off. I HATE Stanford. I live in Stanford country. So I’ve had to deal with the “fans” coming out of the woodworks during their rise. I prefer them to be the doormat they were before Harbaugh came through.

        • 4 recruiting sites are reporting this. So I really don’t know.. From what I was told privately ..We should close very strong! …

          • I’m hearing at the end of the day SC will have 4 or 5 5 star recuits and a class that fills the OL and DL needs with immediate help in the trenches.. The DL could be “epic”.

          • If that is the case, a lot of people will need to rethink how they feel about Helton. He is building a solid TEAM, not just a group of stars like Kiffen and Sark did. This is the way to build the dynasty, talent everywhere.

          • I will be one of them steveg, gladly. But I had to see a little proof of where this was going.

          • I agree that a solid team is built in the trenches. I hope the staff can develop these big boys into beasts.

          • Aubrey Solomon would take this DLine from memorable to Great if he signs but he’s a hard one to read right now. I’ll be evenly surprised and disappointed if he doesn’t come to SC. Helton and BKU just visited him out in Georgia and it sounded like we are on the head to head with Jim Harbaugh and Michigan. My thing is Kenechi Udeze has been selling his personal experiences of playing for USC/NFL/The Lifetime relationships and connections that he was able to receive for attention SC, etc that should gave Solomon’s AND MOM’S attention…..then the right here right now Rose Bowl Champs (Epic Game), #3 team in the nation who is theeee buzz to come back strong next season for a run at the NC, and Clay Helton who doesn’t do magic tricks like sleepovers/go-carts by being the honest/no BS, family man who will be here for years to come should only have to be himself in Solomon’s living room and Aubrey/MOM should take that all in and weigh it and USC beats Michigan all day………….TO BE CONTINUED………….

      • It looks like you’re reading some of the same source materials I am. I’m hearing 22 locks, That USC gets at least one of 2 5 star DT with a better than even chance of getting both and a very good chance as you say a surprise nobody is expecting. 23 spots total with 3 blue shirts if needs.

        • I read all recriiting site and the ask my intel.. He shared pretty much the same. But also added 1 may be a longshot but he liked his OV as did his father… We shall see and hearing no staff changes but we are adding 3 coaches ie, one is a recruiting gem!

          • I have worked from home the past several years on NSD. This year I’ll do the same. It could be wrapped up early.

        • OT Austin Jackson will be a USC Trojan, I’m not worried.
Jackson is a 5-star in two.of the four services. SC will have a really strong group of OL in this class, on paper one of the best we’ve ever had.
Joseph Lewis is #1 WR by ESPN, and a 5-Star by at least two of the four so that’s says a lot about his reputation or his evaluation. He’s gonna be a Trojan.

Barring any last second change of heart Jay Tufele will join Marlon Tuipulotu. His Utah visit sounds more like a show of respect since he was one of the players pushing Tui to SC. That makes another big time get, and UTAH will hate USC more than ever since Gustin, Masina, and now Tufele all left to play for the Trojans.

        • No idea.. But seems like we are getting a former USC player coach back from the NFL. Local So Central LA guy.

    • Thanks for the updates, heaven forbid the big city blogger would actually provide inside USC information…
Unless of course a middle age man taking pictures of
T shirts at a college bookstore applies?

      😀
      Football is fun!

  3. This past season was not short of Washington beat teams who couldn’t get out of their own.. Something I agree with SW on this years schedule makeup as well..

  4. Scotty, Reminder, just like all teams, Washington scheduled these teams years ago. Peterson was probably not around when they were. With ugly, they play so bad, you might want to consider them a 2A school.

  5. Too bad you’re always out of the loop Birdcage. We don’t need you here at USC. Trojan fans supply recruiting info and balanced perspective.

You feed the Trolls and live in your Debbie Downer world while Trojan football finishes #3 and wins yet another Rose Bowl – and is on the way to another top 10 recruiting class which covers all the bases.

Too bad for you and your Troll friends Birdcage.

  6. Also, what does their out of conference schedule have to do with winning the Pac-12 title? Oh, NOTHING!

They still have to go through a difficult Pac-12 schedule. Does SW think Stanford is just going to lay down at home against UW?

    • Just to state the obvious – non conference games don’t count in determining the conference champion.

    • It has a lot to do with making the national playoff which is all that matters, Garry Bleauz.

      • Weird how the NC wasn’t mentioned once in the post. It was titled “Washington Can Sleepwalk To Pac-12 North Title Next Season”. Anything else for today?

        • I didn’t say it was mentioned in the post. But certainly a certified sports junkie like you would know that UW was dinged for a weak OOC strength of schedule. I could make the difference in who goes to the Rose Bowl next year. If UW wins the Pac 12 championship over SC, for instance, but it is dinged for a weak schedule then it goes to the Rose Bowl instead of SC.

  7. If playing Monday Morning QB was an Olympic Event, Wolf would be a triple gold medal winner. It’s always easy to be right after the fact.

  8. The Play off committee need to define who qualifies for a play off spot, nonconference games must include at least one Power 5 team and one non Power 5, and no FCS teams.

  9. It’s not a problem that you criticize your alma mater – that’s what you’re paid to do. It’s your reluctance to call a spade a spade and recognize the positives when they occur that makes you a bit of a click-baiter, troll. When many of your readers (not me, necessarily), come back to your blog solely for breaking news from the comment section, it’s an issue. But keep doing what you do, scottie! why not?

    • I agree. It seems Wolf puts up posts mostly for a reaction more than a good topic to discuss. Maybe he isn’t giving us enough credit you think?

    • Your correct. Might as well. It’s all about the clicks. SW might be laughing all the way to the bank.

  10. While I am not defending Washington’s non-conference scheduling, let’s remind Scott Wolf these schedules were made years back and Rutgers used to be a pretty fair team when Greg Shiano was HC there. Actually a better program than what Washington was back then when this was arranged. You get it SW?

College football needs a level playing field in scheduling: #1- no Division 2 opponents or your team is disqualified for the playoffs. #2- The same number of conference games (8 or 9) each season and #3- You schedule at least 1 tough non-conference opponent. Maybe down the road when the Big5 conferences breakaway from the NCAA and hire a commissioner, these rules will be implemented.

  11. Comparing USC v. UW and Penn State this year, the talent gap between USC and UW was apparent, but Penn State seemed on par talent wise. Anyone know what sanctions Penn State actually incurred in the end? I know most were lifted early. If nothing else, Kiffin (and Sark) recruited well but it still took several years just to get near full strength and we are still not there yet. How is Penn State back so quickly? O’Brien/Franklin v. Kiffin/Sark helps, but that does not explain talent and numbers.

    • Really astute post, Kingfisher. I was worried about the Rose Bowl game because, position for position, each of the Penn State players ran a half second faster 40 than our guys. In fact, on paper they lined up better against us than any team other than Alabama.

    • Just goes to show you that covering up assaults on children isn’t nearly as problematic to the NCAA as maintaining the indentured servitude of the current system.

      • Indeed. I was pleasantly surprised that Baylor finally came around when Briles was fired.

  12. Just learned Brent Musburger is retiring.. He was not a fan of USC, but always did a descent job in the booth!

  13. Washington is not going to sleep walk through anything, because Stanford is still in the north . And as long as David Shaw continues to sign top interior lineman, then they will stay relevant.

  14. Not sure where wolfie gets this. Stanford will challenge UW easily in the North next year. Although their recruiting class isnt big they got some stellar recruits

  15. Great article about Tuipulotu on 24/7, this kid should be the real deal, 5a state champ in wrestling as a junior, 2 ints, and 9 fumble recoveries and much more. Must be quick as a cat….

  16. Huh? Oh…where were we, lets see,oh , I think Stanford comes back. If the q/b who broke something in the bowl game is 100%, they are dominant with wash and wash st close by….Oregon will try…SC better not overlook wash st…need big time pass rush to bother him…
