Morning Buzz: A Grade Of A- For USC Coach Clay Helton

HELTON.ROSE.BOWLAthlon’s likes to rank and grade everything. So they graded the first-year college football coaches and gave USC coach Clay Helton an A-. Only Virginia Tech coach Justin Fuente got a higher grade (A).

I would have given Helton a D for Darnold.

  1. It smarts, don’t it Scottie? When someone gives a Trojan coach props? Better luck next time! You might be in for a short squeeeeze.

    • You think this response from Wolf is childish? Wait till someone in the media give props to Enfield. Wolf’s head will explode.

  2. And you voted Michigan #1. There is a reason why you do what you do. Mediocrity. No need to put on a clean sweatshirt and go out and work hard.

Helton deserves every bit of it. I am sure without the 3 losses, of which Darnold started in one of them, he would have had A+.

It was not Darnold all by himself. Lots of other players stepped up as well as the coaching staff.

    • Wrong. Darnold turned the lost season into a winner. I give Helton credit for getting out of the way and letting this freshman phenom do his stuff.

      • Love Darnold, but the D overcame his Int. and 2 fumbles vs. Colorado. Not to mention the catch our WR took away from the CB. All this to say Darnold has made others better, but his teammates have also covered for him when he hasn’t played his best. All of this in a culture of trust which you regularly give Helton 0 credit for developing. I suppose Darnold single handedly closed this phenomenal recruiting class as well.

        • You don’t love Darnold. All brainless rah rahs like you always give credit to the hired help and blame the student atheltes every chance you get.

Explain to me why even the failed Tollner, Smith, Robinson II, Hackett, Kiffin and Sark regimes managed to have “phenomenal recruiting classes” that supplied the NFL with USC alums for the last three decades? Why would Juju, Adoree and Sam come to a school that had been in such coaching turmoil? Could it possibly be that USC recruits itself?

          • Are you SW w a different handle. Surely 18-22 yr olds manage to accomplish all of their feats by themselves w no coaching or mentoring. I mean that is completely rational and thoughtful. In fact how about we turn every industry over to our 18-22 yr olds since they don’t need any direction.

          • Are you Barack Hussen Obama with your straw man rhetorical style? You brainless rah rahs are completely irrational. Sam saved the lost season with his leadership, guts and talent and you refuse to admit it.

          • McQuay, Burnett and the kicker may disagree w you just a bit. I remember you called me a brainless rah rah months ago when I said Helton needed more time, but the ship would be righted. I guess my only response to you is game, set, match.

          • McQuay, Burnett and the kicker were there when SC lost to Alabama 52-6. Darnold wasn’t the starter then…REMEMBER? I I do remember when I first encounterd your stupidity months ago: you insulted me and then you threw a hissy fit when you had your disresectful attitude thrown back in your prissy face. Game, set, match, life.

          • Having been at these games, Darnold played vs Alabama and was largely ineffective when in the game. If you think he was the difference in game 1 you know less than I thought you did. D game up a late TD vs Utah, but they did not fumble on the goal line in the first half giving up certain points. You problem is you refuse to accept that anyone other than SD improved or helped turn the season around.

          • How would you see anything with those rosey rah rah glasses you wear? Max started the game and completed 10 of 21 passes for 86 yards, with an interception that was returned for a touchdown in the first half with SC down 17-3.The game was over by the time they threw Darnold in. Your problem is you exaggerate and misrepresent like Obama.

          • So Darnold is only the savior when the score is close? He brought us back vs Penn St. if he was so overly prepared to be a difference maker game 1 I would have thought he would have at least led us to one TD? I mean surely as great of a competitor as SD is he didn’t mail it in when we were down 31-3. It’s ok troy, but you might not want to post this nonsense for all to see. Since I did not vote for our previous president it is all the more entertaining when you reference him and me. Troy meltdown in 3, 2, 1

          • It’s safe to say that SD made everybody stay in the moment, sell out, put there bodies on the line for the W because the Team believed they could win. Darnold wasn’t setting up his receivers to get blown up with little chance to win like Browne. If the vision is clear, the W, people will try harder.

          • You still can’t admit you are wrong even when it is pointed out to you that Darnold only was inserted to the Alabama game for mop up duty. You really are dishonest as well as stupid.

          • SD is the savior except for mop up duty? I sure hope nobody on the team or the staff hears about your negativity. In a game that regularly requires 22 starters plus special teams you’ve decided over 21 of them don’t matter and the coaches might as well never leave the locker room. Interesting opinion, to each his own. Football has been described as the consummate team game. Like Belicek says “do your job”. You’re probably right though, he’s wrong. As long as SD shows up nobody else has to do their job.

          • That’s right you brainless rah rah, even Sam Darnold couldn’t overcome a 31-3 implosion in the 3rd quarter against Alabama. Your Barack Hussein Obama straw man argument style betrays your lack of intelligence.

          • Step away from the bottle troy. If your calling me an ex president I take that as an honor. Not a fan of the one our chose, but I’ll take wig a former world leader. I’m. It sure you have your arguments straight. You give SD single handed credit for every win, yet he played vs Alabama and really didn’t play very well. If he does all by himself it shouldn’t matter how anyone else plays or what the score was. If he can lead them to 17 in the 4th vs PSU by himself he certainly could have scored at least a TD vs Alabama by himself. It’s your argument buddy not mine. I recognize the team and coaching make a huge difference in games, not a single player.

          • Your stupidity grows with every post you make, you brainless rah rah. Keep it up so everyone knows what an airhead you are. Only someone as vapid as you would deny that Sam Darnold turned the season around. I look forward to you being proven wrong as Sam leads us to the national title and he wins the Heisman Trophy this coming year.

      • Darnold starting at QB and playing the entire game against Stanford and Bama would have made no difference in the outcome. Both substantial loses like before. Darnold didn’t fully develope to be a 1A Team Leader until after the Colorado Game. gotroy22, usually you make good sense. FIGHT ON !!!

        • Respectfully disagree. Darnold was 18-26 for 253 yards passing against Utah but the defense collapsed in the 4th quarter and allowed a 15 play 83 yard drive to blow a 27-24 lead and the game.

          • gotroy22, When I saw the words Respectfully Disagree, I stopped reading your response because I would like to retract my smart aleck comment. You have a good point. it is possible if Darnold would have played the entire Utah State game, he might have been ready to fend off the Stanford pass rush. I don’t think the Bama game would have done him any good.

  3. A little part of the blogger dies each time he sells his soul to the devil for the sake of a couple extra clicks on his posts. If you don’t like the job you have, find another. I did not like the job Helton did at first, but believed in giving him a chance. I believe the job he did for the whole year is equivalent to an A-

  4. This is the second time Scotty made me laugh out loud, and I’ve been reading his stuff since he got banned by Kiffin – that incident put him on the map more or less

  5. BS, the witless HC Franklin beat his Penn St. team. A single 1st down and bozo u loses. There wasn’t one mistake that Penn St. failed to make that allowed bozo u’s backdoor win.

    Give me a break.

  6. You’d give Helton a D grade?! “D for Darnold”? Ohhhh, I get it. Your quips keep me coming back for more. Stunad!

  7. I suspect the Blogger just gave Helton the average score of his journalism courses at USC.

  8. Considering the turn around and keeping the USC Trojan team focused after starting 1 – 3 ?

Coach Helton gets at least an A !!

And if (If not when) USC closes Wednesday with 3 or 4 Big-Time 5-Star Recruits then this “A” closes at an “A+” as USC is propelled into the Top-5 Recruiting Class (If not Top-3 (There are only 23 recruits available to the Trojans or this/they would finish at #1!))

While still lacking “depth” (Redshirt Seniors, Seniors, Redshirt Juniors) I completely expect a National Championship within “3” years !!!

    FightOn Coach Helton and Co…

      • Only brainless rah rahs with Barack Hussein Obama straw man arguments like Burnt IQ4 say that redshirt freshman QB Sam Darnold didn’t turn around the season.

        • You’re like fishing in stocked pond troy…too easy. I guess we can simply look to the comments on this thread. Overwhelmingly fans disagree w SW and believe Helton had a significant role in turning this season around. You disagree and believe it was SD by himself w/o help from his team and coaches. So I guess you are up against everyone on this thread. I mean Fred even gave Helton credit in the end. I understand you are upset because you’ve been proven wrong about Helton while my words from 4 months ago about him pretty much ring true. If not behaving like chicken little after every series or game makes me a rah rah then I guess I am, but that makes you chicken little.

          • Talking to you is like explaining Calculus to a cow, BurntIQ4. I gave Helton credit but you choose to ignore it. If you knew anything about football or even sports in general, you would get it. But sadly you don’t. Sometimes the best thing a coach can do is recognize the phenomenal talent he has and swallow his ego and let the star player lead the team to victory instead of overcoaching him. That concept is beyond your limited intelligence to grasp.
