USC Morning Buzz: Linebacker Levi Jones To Wear No. 13

Linebacker Levi Jones, known on Signing Day for wearing three different T-shirts, will wear No. 13 next season.

“You’re ready to wear it and make it famous,” Clay Helton tells Jones in the above video.

But maybe someone can explain that No. 13 already has a rich history. Todd Marinovich wore it when he played quarterback for the Trojans but I am referring to another quarterback who wore No. 13. Cotton Warburton (below with the ball) is a member of the College Football Hall of Fame, was an All-American, led USC in rushing in 1932-33 and played on the undefeated 1932 national championship team. If that was not enough, he won an Oscar for best editing in 1965 as the film editor for “Mary Poppins.”

So, no, Jones does not need to make No. 13 famous. Stuff matters that didn’t happen in 2017.

  1. Hmm ok

BTW Scott Wolf, Coach Andy Enfield completed his first road sweep of a Pac-12 opponent last night defeating WA St.

    USC 86 WA St. 77

    • This is good news and no way the bloated one can make it negative towards USC. That means he will not bring it up.

      • Nope – only 7 – OR St and OR this week, @ bel-air tech on the 18th Feb. then on the road @ AZ (23rd) and AZ St. (26th) finally home WA and WA St. (1st and 4th March)

      • Tough break losing last night in Turlock, Gollom Wolf. I heard you slipped on a puddle outside the arena and ripped the seat of your costume.

    • In his words “USC is looking for a rare sweep”

The blogger needs to find Coach Andy Enfield and shake his hand for the programs turnaround.

  2. Todd Marinavich has no history at USC other then drugs, and you probably couldn’t find two fans at a sold out Coliseum who’s ever heard of Cotton Warburton .

    • Huh? Did you forget the 45-42 win over f uucla with his TD pass to Johnny Morton with only seconds left in the game?

      • How about that game against WASH ST when he brought us back with a perfect game ending drive?

Marinovich, a 1st round draft pick, has certainly had a challenging, derailed life as a drug addict. So sad to see him relapse after he appeared to have overcome his demons.

But that winning TD pass to Morton was one of the greatest throws in USC history. I still remember watching that amazing game with some other USC fans and we all went nuts when Todd made that remarkable throw under immense pressure. He was on his back immed after he released the ball.

          • I think so. Another big one – NG George Achica’s (Lombardi runner-up, player of game against both ND and ucla) walk-off blocked 46-yd field goal preserved USC’s 22-21 win over ucla in ’81, knocking the bruins out of the Rose Bowl.

  3. A great moment between a coach and one of his new recruits! Way to pee all over it Wolfe. Is it always raining in your world?

  4. Cotton! In 1813 they took a little trip, down to coast from mighty miss- a – sip.

  5. Surprised no mention of the schedule and attendance in 1932.. and the ccnference had 10 teams . including Idaho and Montana.. They also played Loyola and the ND game that year had a Coliseum attendance of over 93,000 … While the Rose Bowl attendance was lower at 79,000 .. 1932 .. 10-0 led by Howard Jones, and 4 ALL AMERICAN’s but no mention of Cotton Warburton…

    • Hold the sarcasm, Globehead. Mr. Jones has signed on with an Elite College Football Program destined to challenge for the NCAA National Championship this coming season. Climb aboard.

  6. USC is built on fantastic tradition, pure and simple. Amazing that Birdcage thinks USC fans need to be told that “stuff matters” pre 2017.

Ardent followers are well are of Cotton Warburton, even know he became very successful in the movie business like so many other Trojans. Ward Bond is one of my favorites but he never gets mentioned.

But Warburton never made #13 famous. Older players didn’t make their numbers famous except maybe Tom Harmon who wore #98 at MICH.

Good luck to Levi. He was a big surprise to most all Trojans who follow recruiting who had been led to believe FSU was an even more likely option. This one could have gone either way and Helton was very relieved to hear from Levi right before the announcement that Levi was in fact coming, the perfect start to a wonderful Signing Day.

    • You lost your 301st costume contest last night. You should be ashamed of yourself instead of creating a new sock puppet, Gollom Wolf.

  7. Great article in Houston Chronicle about Bruce Matthews. Written by John McClain. Nice profile of the family of an all time USC great.

  8. Wolf, did you see Cowherd on the Super Bowl pregame? Did you get a time slot to be on also? Oh, you didn’t? Wow, I wonder why?

  9. What a stupid thing to write a column on. Waste of band width and time. Who cares about uni numbers. Please wear 13 and make it famous for you Levi. I actually want to forget that jerk Marinovich anyway.
    I

  10. Don’t get your panties in a bunch Mr. Blogger. It’s called motivation and I’m all for it.

  11. It’s cold out and Scott broke out the Trojan Video Gold VHS tape. I am sure the comments made to the future meant no disrespect to the past. I hope # 13 is lucky for the future.

  12. To the blogger,
Sit back, get the pen and paper ready because USC is going to sign the greatest LB class in a long time. They’re lining up at the door. The momentum is strong to say the least. Levi Jones is one good LB, he should be just fine at SC, but buckle up. Gonna be an epic group LB’s.

  13. Scottie, maybe mention Stafon Johnson and we will contiplate your post. coach is referring to making it a defensive tradition like 55 or 25…. Too be able to hand it down to the next stud lining up to play LB for USC.

  14. Yeah, Cotton Warbuton is a name at the tips of everyone’s tongues lately. Timely reporting, Wolfe!

  15. I believe that the word Helton was looking for was infamous… Levi Jones maybe could top the great trojan criminal Todd Marinovich in making #13 infamous. Maybe he should have shot higher and asked for #32!

Will Levi Jones make the Mount Rushmore of southern cal criminals?
