Tommie Robinson said today he left USC because Ed Orgeron was giving him extra duties.
“The sell was Coach O. He’s giving me the opportunity to be an assistant head coach and recruiting coordinator, something I want to do and look forward to doing,” he said. “At the end of the day – one thing I’ll always do, I’ll always be honest and keep it real – it was always about him. He’s a true friend of mine.”
I’ve heard Robinson also got a significant raise from what he made at USC. And it would be hard to make him assistant head coach/recruiting coordinator, since those titles are held by Johnny Nansen.
Don’t regress in replacing the assistant coaches you lose with less quality replacements. Don’t make the mistake PC did the last few years he was here. Position coaches matter, you better believe it.
I can’t fault the guy for wanting to move up. I don’t think people get into coaching with the thought they will be an assistant forever. Maybe someday we will hear of him being the head coach somewhere.
Who’s more valuable to the USC program, Tommie Robinson, or Johnny Nansen ?
They should be able to get a good coach to replace TR. SC is a hot commodity right now but SC has always been a great place to coach. Just look at all the recent coaches that have coached at SC and where they went afterwards(Wilcox, Chris Wilson, Sark, Kiff, Peter Sirmon, Keith Heyward, Mike Summers, Baxter, Orgerin) and all the rest. Once they’ve coached at SC, you can bet they will probably get a great job the next time around. It’s a good thing to have on your resume.
