Morning Buzz: Finally, A Mock Draft With A USC Player

A couple days ago I asked if anyone could find a mock draft with a USC player in the first round? Well, here’s one by Pete Prisco of CBS Sports that has Adoree Jackson going with the 30th pick to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

And Jackson’s getting some compliments from respected draft analyst Mike Mayock.

“He provides immediate value as a return guy,” Mayock said. “He’s not a top-five corner yet (in this NFL draft). But I think he’s raw and has the ability to develop into one.”

That will mean playing with more consistency than he did at USC last season, when he surrendered seven touchdown passes.

  1. I hope he winds up where there is a need. Somebody is going to know he is special.

  2. Only in America can we get such top tier journalism. Keep up the good work sw. That’s what separates you from cut n’ paste bloggers.

  3. I’ve always shared Mike Mayock’s opinion of Adoree Jackson, and he’s on point. Jackson also needs to become more physical, because the only successful cornerback, that was able to get away with that, was Deon Sanders.

  4. Not sure why Scottie keeps ignoring the myriad other mock drafts with both players in the first round. Then again,he always brags that he doesn’t read his comment section. (yep…)

  5. For a guy who watched AJ and JSS play all year, SW has (unsurprisingly) little to say about them other than what you could get just from looking at a Box Score.

How many TDs did Lattimore give up by comparison? Didn’t Sidney Jones get beat by (gasp) potentially un-drafted Darreus Rogers when the rubber hit the road? I watched Marlon Humphrey get crossed up twice late in the NC game alone.? How would all this fare in the SW school of sports analysis? Not good not good…Yet somehow these guys are showing up in these mocks that a guy on his couch made when he got home from work.

Somehow AJ won the Thorpe award, played his best in big games (2 INTs @ Wash, 1 INT in Rose Bowl) while handling ST and occasional offense). He was in position on 90-95% of all snaps, in man press, against each team’s best WR. Almost all of these guys are being drafted on fit for scheme, and upside. Adoree’s upside is his speed and hands. He has a knack for making plays. He’s a solid tackler, and has a lot of experience in man coverage. He’s a little undersized (like Jabril Peppers) compared to the Patrick Peterson prototype, which is one reason why lengthier guys like Humphrey and Jones and Tabor will go ahead of him. But the guy is as unique and pure of an athlete as they’ve had on defense in that position since the Daylon McCutcheon. He’ll have a 10 year career. He’s as cool as they come. And I bet he gets drafted in the 20-25 range, becuase CBs will go flying off the board in this draft. You basically need 3-4 of them on the field at any given time in the new NFL.
