Former USC Announcer Mike Walden Passes Away At 89

Announcer Mike Walden, a member of the USC Hall of Fame, died on Feb. 12, according to LARadio.com. He was 89.

Walden was USC’s play-by-play announcer from 1966-72 but did USC games for various networks for several decades. He was also UCLA’s play-by-play announcer, the only person to be both school’s primary announcer. Many of you might remember him best for his role as the straight man on the “Super Dave” TV show.

Above, he calls what i consider the greatest shot in USC basketball history during a 1982 game vs. Washington at the Sports Arena. The analyst is coaching legend Pete Newell.

  1. Iron Mike Waldon, I remember. He was on a 50,000 watt clear channel station and I could hear his broadcasts on a crystal radio set when the scouts went camping. He and Tom Kelly were tops in the area.

    • I remember he would do sports on the old Lohman and Barkley radio show on mornings on KFI.

  2. Walden was great and he had to have a good sense of humor to do the Super Dave show.
Dwight Anderson was spectacular, One of the best USC players I ever saw. That shot was so amazing that the rule was changed soon after.
