Don MacLean And Kevin O’Neill Pour Water On LaVar Ball

This makes me wish I had the Pac-12 Network. Don MacLean and Kevin O’Neill had no tolerance for LaVar Ball’s comments that his son, Lonzo, is going to be better than Steph Curry, which LaVar repeated last night.

MacLean: “If you’re talking about that your son’s better than the NBA league MVP when your son’s not even going to be the Pac-12 MVP, that takes away some of your credibility. And I’m not sure how much longer people are even going to want to interview LaVar Ball if he’s making statements this outrageous.”

O’Neill: “He wants to be in front of the camera. He was never good enough to be in front of the camera. I’m not sure his son’s going to be a great NBA player. He doesn’t have any mid-range game. The more it goes on, the more he gets exposed. LaVar should just shut up and let his kids enjoy themselves.”

  1. Ball is to UCLA basketball what Farnold is to USC football. Both came along when both programs were struggling for relevancy. Sam lifted the football program back to national recognition, just like Lonzo did with UCLA basketball. Both should recognized for this feat. Yes, Lavar is taking advantage of his fifteen minutes of fame. But let’s not penalize the son for his fathers antics. Lonzo is a very calm and collected teenager who we get to watch blossom right here in Southern California. You have to remember, Lavar did not look to put his sons in a hi-school basketball powerhouse as so many other parent do when their child show promise. They went to their local hi-school. When it came time for college, he said there is a good one right down the road, no need for Kentucky, Duke, Kansas to recruit his kid. And he really isn’t a “helicopter” parent either. Last week when UCLA played Oregon in one of their most important games of the season, Lavar did not attend the game as he was at his other sons hi-school game. He said when asked why he didn’t attend the Oregon game, he said, “Lonzo is on his own path. He doesn’t need me.” Cut Lavar some slack. He is just having fun.

    • That’s fair. Even Lonzo kind of shrugged off his Dad’s comments after the game. Stupid comments to be sure, but at the end of the day, unimportant.

I don’t put much stock in the words of one guy that was unremarkable as an NBA player and the other guy as a coach. Neither Jason Kidd nor Magic Johnson were known as shooters in college. Both did just fine.

  2. I was seriously looking forward to seeing video footage of the post SC victory with them dumping Gatorade on LaVar and him screaming of how his son’s made UCLA Basketball and threatening to punch fans on his way out of Pauley Pavilion WWF style.

  3. The good thing about his kids is that they seem more mature than they’re Don King daddy. And now there’s rumblings that the younger brother definitely not a Bruin lock and wants to make his own waves.

    • His younger brother isn’t that good and may not see much playing time. It’s the youngest that is the better of those two. We will see.

What kept you away from the UCLA site?

      • Been busy. Haven’t been on SWs site as much either. I was talking about the younger Ball. Hearing he’s got a whole different plan than his older brothers. Wants to cut his own path.

  4. Is that the same Kevin O’Neil who coached USC to one of the worst records in Trojans history?
