USC Morning Buzz: And Now For Some Recruiting Rankings

Signing Day was less than three weeks ago, but that doesn’t mean the ridiculously early 2018 recruiting rankings are not in full bloom. USC is ranked No. 6 by Rivals after Sunday’s commitment by outside linebacker Palaie Gaoteote. The Trojans have six commitments.

The class already has a five-star commitment in quarterback Matt Corral. I would be remiss not to remind you that at one time Ricky Town was a five-star quarterback. And I’ve mentioned some poor performances by five-star QBs here. And here.  By the way, Sam Darnold was only a four-star quarterback.

  1. Matt Corral may be a lot of other things, but I don’t think he’ll be a quitter like Ricky Town was. He’s already got a cannon for an arm, and with the proper development in the upstairs, he’ll be a real force to be reckoned with. The QB competition between him and Jack Sears for the next starting QB might turn out to be one of the most intriguing ones in recent years.

    • He will need to be a determined competitor as he will no doubt have to compete not only with Sears but possibly/hopefully JD Daniels.

      • I’d be very surprised to see JD Daniels coming to SC knowing he’d have to compete with Corral and Sears.

  2. Three months ago the blogger questioned why USC had so many 3 star commits. Who is evaluating these players, he asked.

Now, the blogger insinuates that 5 stars aren’t always that good.

    Humpty Dumpty.

  3. “Sam Darnold was only a four-star quarterback.”
Impressive but need I remind you that Will Derting was only a 2-star recruit. Beat that Wolfy!

  4. You forgot to mention Sam Darnold was also being recruited by Duke, Colorado State, Wake Forest, and Harvard to name a few schools. The Ohio States and Alabamas of college football didn’t offer him.

  5. Speaking of quarterbacks, did you hear what Mitch Mustain said about Kiffin not being head coach material?

  6. Scooter, reminder, having great talent commit early will lead to great talent wanting to go to USC. When great talent gets on the field, they sometimes can cover coaching mistakes. Great talent more times than not beat beat great coaching with marginal talent. Now, great coaching with great talent wins you National Championships. Ask Pete Carrol and John Robinson.

  7. He’s reminding us all of Ricky Town, the kid who spent two days at USC.
Are we supposed to be scared or warned?
We have the two major building blocks in place for an epic class. A 5-Star QB and a 5-Star LB who are both ranked in the top 10 overall players nationally. That means theyre big time….That’s what gets kids to join, wanting to play along side the best. This class is going to be scary good. Jalen Hall and Amon-Ra St. Brown are two WR’S that SC is closing in on, Hall is a heavy lean and now St. Brown has pumped the breaks made a u-turn and is trending to SC. They’re in Scouts top 11 overall player rankings. These are pickups that are very much in reach and we have the momentum right now to continue stacking these kids. Way early in recruiting, but USC is going to smack people around from here on.

  8. If Helton can attract & keep a good coaching staff together in this program’s ability in moving forward, there should be a statue of Sam Darnold placed in Heritage Hall as the glue to a re-arisen Trojan Football program. After all, where was this program headed before Sam trotted out on the field last year?
