Morning Buzz: Do USC Skill Players Have A Bad Draft Rap?

NFL draft expert Mike Mayock addressed whether USC’s gotten a reputation for producing overrated skill players?

Before I get to his answer, Mayock was asked about the Philadelphia Eagles’ need for a wide receiver said there are three potential first-round picks (Corey Davis, Mike Williams, John Ross). He then added, “I think I’d struggle thinking that the three of them will struggle (with the Eagles) like Nelson Agholor did, who was another first round pick.”

Fair to say Agholor is viewed as a disappointment in Philadelphia.

Now to his answer about USC’s reputation:

“A school can get labeled. I don’t think USC has been labeled, and I saw something recently, the same thing you’re talking about with all the skill position players with USC, but where schools kind of get labeled, and I’m not going to mention schools, but where they get labeled a little bit is whether it’s a `soft program or not.’ What kind of kids are coming out of there? Is it a country club? Can we coach them hard? Are they coming every day to practice? Those kind of things sometimes make reputations for schools. I don’t think USCs in that classification.”

  1. Two curious omissions you failed to mention Scott – 1. Mayock is out of Boston College from which another BC alum Doug Flutie also known for contempt for USC but also Mayock took Haden’s place for ‘The Princess’ on NBC’s telecasts.

No mention of the perception of those who come out of AL – they don’t last very long because the regimen in Tuscaloosa burns them out to where they have 2 – 3 season in their tank when they hit the NFL.

Hey Mayock what label would you but on AL? Maybe that’s the reason Sabin was a bust in the NFL

    • I don’t think Maycock was dissing USC at all. It’s not a Country Club program. Texas, under Mack Brown , turned into a country club program.

Not sure why USC should be criticized because Chip Kelly is insane and didn’t understand NFL scouting and talent projection. Agholor should have never been drafted in the first round. In fact, when he was, the consensus even around USC circles was “Huh?”

      • Got it – mea culpa – just read the bio on the guy and saw his: alma mater (Boston College) and his current job (w. ‘The Princess’). Felt part of his assessment was how bad Adoreee Jackson personally made the Irish look last November.

  2. No matter the possible perception of over-rated skill players, probably targeting USC the past say 6-years, PC practiced the team hard, hard enough that this website was continuously complaining the players were getting injured. But look what that produced in games? (Look what it produces at Alabama) Few if any could stay with USC’s physicality. And about those last 6-years, it was a different circumstance due to Kif & Sark being heavily offensive minded and, remember the sanctions took away depth to where the hard practices had to be modified and the toughness slipped.
Now that Helton has the scholarships back, he can and has leveled recruiting both sides of the ball more evenly as he needs to if USC is to play for championships again. The sanctions caused a lot of obstacles, even for USC football.

  3. Wait, so if the people who are in charge of evaluating the talent don’t arrive at valid conclusions or make the correct decisions, that means it’s USCs fault?

    Lol!

If people like Maylock whiff on a player, it’s on him.

    • Mayock is pretty open as to how he arrives at his evaluations and is one of the few guys who owns up to his mistakes Many of the so called experts don’t do much work before they start sharing their opinion & those guys are no better than you and I sitting at the end of the bar.
