Another USC-Notre Dame Night Game In South Bend

The idea of USC playing Notre Dame in South Bend in the afternoon is becoming a quaint memory. Notre Dame announced today that it will play USC at 7:30 ET on Oct. 21. That is the fourth straight night game for the series at Notre Dame Stadium.

Why am I opposed to this? Well, for one thing it makes it potentially much colder for the fans, depending on the weather. And if you are a USC fan making the trip and staying in Chicago, you get back very late. If that doesn’t bother you, it also makes it rougher for the players, who get back to Los Angeles around 3 or 4 a.m. Remember, USC plays at Arizona State the following weekend.

But the No. 1 reason is because Notre Dame games are just meant to be played in the afternoon. It makes the game feel special with all the surroundings the campus offers. Oh well, TV is king.

UPDATED: Notre Dame also announced the 2019 USC game will be played on Oct. 12, which is a little earlier than usual.

  1. The game used to start at 4 P.M. back there. By the time the game was done and you got back into Chicago, it was around 12 P.M. You could grab a bite to eat and listen to a band. Now, you won’t arrive until 3 A.M., in the middle of the morning and it being cold. It should be plausible for both sets of fans and where they are staying for the night. I won’t go because of that. I will have to go one more time before I get a seat on the 50 yard line looking down upon the game though.

  2. I have been back there 3 times, all memorable. The walk thru campus behind the ND band, the isolation of the stadium (which has now changed I am told), the wide open fields surrounding the stadium (ditto–not anymore), and the ivy covered walls of the campus.

This is certainly something every Trojan and ND fan should experience once in their life. But not at night. Too dark, too cold, and a whole lot less atmospheric. Glad I went before college football became so corporate.
