USC Adds A Kicker

Chase McGrath, a kicker from Mater Dei who is currently a high school senior, announced tonight he committed to USC. That should tell you what the coaches think of Matt Boermeester’s status. McGrath will arrive in the fall. He had been offered a chance to be a “preferred walk-on” by Texas Tech and Utah State. Remember that if any recruiting analysts try to go crazy over this commitment. He made 3 of 5 field goals last season with a long of 51 yards.

USC’s had freshman Michael Brown as its kicker this week in spring practice so McGrath will be a safety net in case Boermeester never returns.

  1. McGrath led the nation in kickoff yards in 2016 and hit 84 touchbacks on 106 kicks as a senior. He made 10-of-13 field goal attempts in 2015 and 3-of-5 attempts in 2016.

  2. Recruiting analysts say he’s a 5-Star kicker so you pretty much gave away that you did absolutely no research on the kid except look up Mater Dei’s stats. Yes, even 5-Star have trouble getting that full ride, but the situation has presented an opportunity and the kid has a chance to play early. Congratulations to McGrath. Fight On!

    • He comes as a preferred walk on.Adds depth and talent to all kicking, including punting.Baxter could really develop him..Has about a 85% avg of reaching end zone on kick off.huge upside

      • Much neede for us right now. SW went out deliberately forgot to point out that he was 1st Team All CIF and only kicked a handful of times all year. That says he’s the real deal . We got a solid kicker.

  3. Good smart move by Helton. As long as there were no more DT’s or WR’s might as well get another kicker.
