USC Morning Buzz: Offensive Line Has Spring In Step

USC’s offensive line is undergoing an overhaul this spring but it is also quicker without  6-foot-8 Zach Banner or 334-pound guard Damien Mama. And it seems like offensive tackle Chuma Edoga is ready to leave the doghouse from last season.

“My head wasn’t in it last season; I had other issues I had to take care of,” Edoga said. “I’m 100 percent all in now. I feel like I’m going to surprise a lot of people.”

  1. I remember reading one time that Neil Callaway didn’t prefer such a big and slow offensive line like we had in the last couple of years but preferred a smaller quicker O-line that could pull better and get to the holes faster. I think that he has that now and I have a feeling that this will be a better O-line even though we lost some pretty good players.

      • What I read was that he inherited that big O-line and he wasn’t going to make waves when he first got here by benching Zack or Damian so he just started demanding that they lose weight(which they did) but he was never in favor of a huge O-line. He much more preferred a smaller quicker O-line like what Chip Kelly had at Oregon. The reason I think that this will probably be a better O-line is because he is a really good O-line coach and now he is starting to get the players he wants.

  2. I’m concerned about this Oline. Not to mention the depth of the linebackers. Although we have plenty of talent in other areas, these two positions have me tremendously concerned. Coaches have a lot of development and time but they need it. To me this is not a top five team at this point. But I do believe in this staff.

  3. Quicker vs. bigger? What matters is opening up holes for RoJo to keep the offense balanced so the opponent can’t ignore the run, and keeping Darnold on his feet long enough to get his passes off and not banged up. I think that is the right answer…

  4. Wow, Wolfie, that headline! It’s positively Dan Weber-esque. Thought I was on the wrong site for a sec.

  5. I talked Edoga up left and right early on but uo to this point im not sure what we’re gonna get out of him. He has to step his game up and play at a high level for USC because just competing and winning the spot wont be enough. He’s in his third season and this is the perfect opportunity to make his mark.
