Meanwhile, Checking In On The Browns

The Cleveland Browns just traded for Brock Osweiler and are apparently looking for another quarterback, including New England Patriots QB Jimmy Garoppolo. So is it time to admit for Hue Jackson to admit he did not need to use a third-round pick on Cody Kessler?

“You have to trust me on this one,” Jackson said the night of the draft.

Not when it comes to third-round QB picks, Hue.

  1. Cody Kessler’s career in the NFL is only 16 games old and his role in the league will always be to battle it out for a backup spot unless he lands on a team that has a good O-Line and weapons at all the skill positions. Why are you obsessed with digging up the negatives with these kids after they leave? First of all Kessler wasn’t the big time recruit with huge expectations like Matt Barkley, Mark Sanchez, or John David Booty coming into USC. He’s done pretty good for himself when you consider he was really just a backup option after Matt Wittek. The need for you and bad news is enough for a doctor to right you a prescription or keep you for evaluation.

    • I have nothing but the highest regard for Kessler. He helped to keep The Trojan pride high during some of our darkest times.Like others around him he has helped lay a new foundation for return to excellence…As a student athlete he played and earned degrees..He is getting a nice paycheck in his choice of work now.NFL.
It also seems the fans of Cleveland support him.
Im Proud of him for what he has accomplished….WW bases his career on dis respect.Always will. So flipping to the current Trojan news , The Big Dance, and Trojan excellence spring ball and What may be a #1 recruiting class.

      • I agree. Kessler was a stand up kid and he’s just getting started. Great win yesterday and great win for the perception of our program since we were one of only two games yesterday so kids got to see the USC Andy Enfield era come alive. Can’t get to the spring game after all since my son has opening day/game. But glad SC is back on the field to prepare for bigger and better things. #1 Recruiting is what I’m thinking also. SC is a threat now to flip the 5-Star DE committed to Penn State. He’s been to SC twice now and it looks like we made a big impression on him. Might be a long time before any kind of flip, but we are making moves this year.

        • Yes ! The DE Penn .State commit’s father is high on USC. Another DE ,from Tennessee is very high on us too.Emerson, he’s inline for 5* . Potentially we could sign an incredible Defense class.Far and away best in country.. Wish you and your family great time with Opening Day..!!!

  2. Is it time for the blogger to admit that everyone else admits…that Kessler admits…blah blah….

  3. Scott, this has been explained over and over and over by people who understand the NFL, understand the salary cap issues, and understand what happened, like Peter King and Andrew Siciliano. The Browns did not trade for Brock Osweiler. They might even cut him. They might trade him. They might, but probably are not going to pull a deal for Garropolo because NE seems to want too many picks. The Browns did what NBA teams do all the time, they took a bad contract off the Texans hands for a draft pick BECAUSE THEY HAD 100 MIL OF CAP SPACE AND PER NFL RULES HAVE TO SPEND IT!

I mean, fine, you don’t think Kessler is the QB of the future and that the Browns drafted him too high. OK, fair enough. But to comment on the Osweiler trade vis a vis Kessler’s status when you have absolute no knowledge or understanding of the mechanics of the NFL and why the trade was made is ignorant to the bone.

I guess, after the first half of yesterday’s basketball game you were all set to full metal on Enfield. But he ruined your story and now you have to wait until Friday night/Saturday to post your Enfield hit piece.

So instead you look for something USC related to bag on, and you pull the Osweiler trade from your butt. Weak, Scottie, weak. Give it a rest for a few days.

    • Don’t bring facts to Scottie on one of his dead horses. He was anti-Kessler, and he was fit to be tied when he was drafted higher than expected and given a nice contract. He’s going to track Cody’s success for the rest of his career, and whenever there’s a set-back, Scottie will pounce, from the shadows, to prove he’s right about Cody. Strange, but true.

  4. His contract has a total value of $3.3 million. $664,000 fully guaranteed. So, modest by NFL means but he played at the highest level and wasn’t a total disaster like fellow PAC 12er Goff.

    • Agree on Goff. Speaking of drafting too high, the Rams mortgaged the future on someone whom some NFL executives believe will bust out of the league.

A reason why Davis Webb is slipping even though he is bigger, more mobile and has a better arm than Goff (and the Cal coaches think will be a better NFL player) is that some execs believe that Goff was a system QB and that AirRaid QBs will have a difficult transition to the NFL.

BTW: Kessler didn’t cost the Browns much. They had three third round picks, and Kessler was the Browns’ fifth overall pick in the ’16 draft, the last of their three thrid round picks. Consider that at least 5 teams in last years draft had five or less picks total.

    • Once you conceded that UCLA is no longer a dynasty of any sort you started putting up some sensible posts.
      Well done!

    • Not only was he not unloaded, one of the bigger fan sites thinks the Browns should use 2017 to build around Kessler.

      http://dawgpounddaily.com/2017/03/16/cleveland-browns-building-around-cody-kessler-in-2017/

There aren’t saying Kessler is the QB of the future, they are saying the Browns are better off in 2017 addressing other areas, like um, every other position, and, in the meantime, see if Cody can learn to throw over the top and complete passes more than 15 yards downfield (it’s gonna be tough. he could do it in three years at USC).

      • Hey dawgpound, sas and i_G know what they are talking about. You miss the point. Give Kessler an OL that blocks well for 60 minutes, three receivers who run their routes consistently and catch what is thrown to them. Cody Kessler will Shine.

        • Exactly.

Block. Run the ball. Play defense. Don’t turn the ball over. Win some games.

Is Kessler ever going to be Aaron Rodgers? No. Is he going to strap a team on his back and carry them to the Super Bowl? No. But as long as he avoids turnovers, there is no reason he can’t be a poor man’s Alex Smith. And in a league where Mike Glennon gets 44 million dollars, being a poor man’s Alex Smith might be good enough.

  5. Cody is an outstanding QB. His greatest asset is the fact that he is a competitor big time. But not in the sam universe with Sam Darnold.

  6. I have absolutely no problem spending a third round pick for Kessler: Blogger what is your hard on against this guy ? rag rage rag on Kessler since he left. Getting old. No Darnold but who is ? Kessler good enough to start in NFL for some games, not his fault the Browns are horrible.

  7. A lot of sense in the comments today. I agree with those saying put a line around Kessler and they will do well. I would expect the off season was spent working with the receivers and learning the quirks they possess

  8. Kesslers completion percentage was 65.6 – 9th best in NFL. And that was with some pathetic receivers. Aaron Rodgers was at 65.7%
Osweller was ranked 27th at 59%. Kessler had 6 tds and 2 interceptions but had to endure 21 sacks. He played quite well considering his team.

  9. The Browns are addressing the weak right side of the line. Kessler has the respect of the players. He will do well once he gets some weapons. He had to rush many throws and with an NFL strength training program he will get better. You should be proud of this young man Scott.

  10. What is your problem with Kessler? He is a stand up guy and represented the Trojans well. The hate/jealousy runs deep in you SW.
