USC-SMU Thoughts

Did anyone miss the game because they had to work? CBS Networks put a game between the No. 2 and No. 5 media markets at noon PT? And on truTV?

The interesting part of USC’s two NCAA victories is they are winning with only certain players performing in each game. Jordan McLaughlin was 0-5 on 3-pointers today and had five points. Elijah Stewart, who did not score against Providence, had 22 points today. And it helps to have some good fortune. An SMU player stepping out of bounds. Another player missing a 1-and-1 free-throw situation. Maybe if USC keeps winning, someone will hire Andy Enfield.

  1. Magic Johnson once said sometimes it’s better to be lucky than good, but the better you are the luckier you get…Fight On!

    • Magic finds its way. Much like it did Wednesday and today ! Same as it did so often for Magic Johnson..Always remember with Kareem down, Magic took over and brought it Home.

  2. I have heard no less than 4 different basketball people, coaches and former players , speak highly of Andy Enfield. And a couple of them made their comments before the tourney started. Coach Enfield is not perfect , but who is? If anyone wants to hold him to a standard of perfection, go right ahead. I choose to see him as a legitimate, competent and successful D 1 head coach.

    • Have to agree with you, the zone he pulled out late in second half stifled SMU, and their shooting tanked. He’s got them you’d believing…

  3. If you keep writing the way you do, it will keep you from getting hired and moving up.

  4. Sour grapes, Scott was already thinking he would blow up this blog with a fire Andy grab..Andy is a good dude, good basketball coach and someone the kids enjoy playing for. We don’t have the history in basketball, like the school in WLA .. As they don’t in football. Barring a huge meltdown of the basketball program, Andy is here to stay..it takes time to build, look at coach Helton.. Instead of chirping negatively, back the school that gave you the tools that engineered your career path..

    Fight On ✌

    • Helton has built really nothing so far. He did not recruit the Juju, Adoree, Rogers, Banner, Wheeler and other upper class-men. Darnold was his savior brought in by Sark. As for the basketball game. A lot of missed opportunities on both sides. Credit for hanging tough when down by ten a couple of times. The team is not scoring the way they run and gun from earlier in the season. Won today only because Jordan McLaughlin is Irish. Maybe a team of destiny like Enfield’s old school FGCU who made the sweet sixteen. They are not in the same class as Bibby’s elite eight squad.

      • I consider laying a solid foundation the most important step.Helton is doing that..

      • He took a team from 1-3 to 10-3 and a great come from behind victory in the Rose Bowl.. Regardless who recruited who, his staff prepared this team and did a great job..Sark nor Kiffin deserve credit for the development of this past years football team, they played for Helton and won with Helton!

        • Some people just won’t give credit where credits due, Helton had nothing to due with the composure of the team in the fourth quarter and Clancy’s coaching had nothing to do with shutting them out in the fourth quarter either, SMH..

        • Cody Kessler was recruited by Coach Helton..Clay Helton has been the rock for many players this decade. He quietly has kept the Trojan football players believing in themselves.

      • If I may offer a minority and rival opinion, Helton appears to be the first sane human that SoCal has employed at a high level within the football program (and probably the entire Athletic Department) Since McKay. OK, McKay was usually drunk but a good coach and funny so he gets a pass.
There IS hope with Helton that someone at SoCal will realize they don’t have to cheat and still can compete at a high level.
Let’s hope their current AD can forget how SoCal used to win and finally “Win the right way” as St. Pat used to say while he was draining charities.

    • Indiana may interview Enfield after he takes Cinderella through the tournament.

    • He, he, he he.
I’m guessing Baylor can hardly sleep because they fear the Troyboys.

  5. Andy is successful, rich, and has a hot wife. No wonder Mr. Basement doesn’t like him.

    • Haden is sitting home, smoking a pipe, reveling in his glory for hiring Rose Bowl Champ Helton, and Cinderella Enfield. Things are looking up for the USC atheletics dept. Thanks Pat!

  6. Worst-case scenario for Scottie continues. He has to find negative spin in whatever dark corners he can find them. Anguish ensues for this beat reporter, and I couldn’t be happier about it.

  7. He’s trying to prove that he was right for bashing Enfield for those first 2 years. And Haden! Turns out Haden’s last two hires – Enfield and Helton – were golden. Apparently Scottie’s prognosticating skills are for crap.

  8. Whew– watched every second of that game from my computer at work and I am worn out. I was nervous throughout. Only SC sports will do that to me.

Perhaps now the heat will come off Haden for hiring the football and basketball coach. Turns out they are both pretty good, wouldn’t you say?

And how about this basketball team. Too bad Metu and Boat will be leaving. This could be a formidable club next year. Actually, they are formidable right now.

And the comebacks. This is unreal. The dream may come to pass on Sunday, but I am going to relish it right now

    • HI John, I don’t know and I hope they don’t leave. I think they are not ready. One more year would do them wonders. It is my opinion

  9. So USC was lucky?? Wolf- this is too much, even from you. SC played through bad luck, and still won!!! I know this breaks your heart, because you hate our coach and like ridiculing the program.
Another Gem from “America’s worst beat writer,” who actively roots against the team he gets paid to cover.

  10. I’m not here to bash the blogger, but I don’t understand the negativity. The UCLA blog on this network with Thuk whatever, is more objective, she reports, give stats, and all. SW puts a negative spin on almost everything USC. I don’t understand it.

  11. Scott Wolf was right in naming Andy Enfield the best college hoops coach in the nation. Great insight Scott!
