Who Else Might Leave?

How concerned should USC be about whether assistant coach Jason Hart goes to Washington? He has been the Trojans’ main recruiter and I can vouch that he recruited Chimezie Metu, Bennie Boatwright; De’Anthony Melton and Jonah Mathews, among others. So it’s probably in Andy Enfield’s interest to keep him around.

You know who’s leaving? Steve Alford! He’s going to Indiana.

    • tim chaney

not even on bruin hate, but how could he NOT go back?

      • jim

He always said that the IU job would be his dream job. He’ll take if they offer it to him. I heard that they already have offered it to him. It’s only a rumor but this rumor sounds like it has legs.

        • Alvarado

Saturday sports radio on 710 had a recording of a guy stating Alford had forfeited a year of his current contract and that “…ucla always eats their own.” Didn’t get the guy’s name but why indeed would Alford stay. The sports jocks joked about Howland returning and that actually made some sense. Alford is going to IN regardless of how this plays out – he’ll have a full 5 years of no one meddling with him with a brand new place to work unlike the unrealistic expectations in westwood.

          • jim

If they offer it to him, he’ll take it. I heard that they already have offered it. Some of my IU fans tell me that the fans are against it 80-20. I think that the UCLA fans will be glad to get rid of him. I don’t see too many tears being shed for Alford. He’s a good coach but not a great one. He’s never actually gotten past the sweet 16 in his whole career. Some people call him ‘sweet 16 Steve’.

          • Alvarado

Yeah that does seem to be the consensus towards Alford but man that comment made by that commentator on how bel-air tech treats their coaches, as in all professions, is known and that does not bode well for the bruins moving forward in either securing a quality proven HC for the men’s program or retaining a new younger hire if he shows progress. Alford would be a fool to stay in westwood. He’s far better off moving to Bloomington-IN.

          • jim

I heard UCLA is going after Greg Marshall from Wichita State. He’s their #1 choice and then Drew Bryce from Vanderbilt.

          • Alvarado

Well Guerrero better have a solid # 3 as well as a # 4 because the last time this happened after they sacked Howland the VCU coach and I forget the other one both declined the offer which was when brilliant Dan took a dart and threw it against the wall of names to pick from “….hmm how about teve Alford? Maybe he’ll come and if not let’s see what the HC at CO St. is after?”

          • j metaphor

Was that similar to the reaction you got from prospective football coaches before you hired Cutty Sark?

          • j metaphor

Dude, the abuse of Guerrero seems a bit out of place when your own hero St. Pat hired Sark even while he and his family were sacking a local charity.
Andy Enfield did well this year for the first time because he is in the center of more talent than Hugh Hefner. Alford is a far better coach.

          • Pasadena Trojan

Alford has better talent. I want to know what Alford would do with the talent of USC and Enfield do with the talent of ugly. See where that would go.

          • jim

            we’ll see what happens

          • j metaphor

            Alvin,
Your post is ridiculous even compared to your own low standard.
SoCal has a bad take on how UCLA coaches are treated because at SoCal, not enabling them to cheat is considered a strange form of abuse. Fending off the NCAA to protect the likes of Pete the Cheat was part of a SoCal A.D. job description.
In terms of how UCLA coaches are treated, I don’t remember leaving any of our coaches on the LAX tarmac. I don’t remember UCLA throwing their Basketball coach under the bus to the NCAA to try to save their football program (unsuccessfully) from near Death Penalty sanctions. Then again, I don’t remember us hiring any known alcoholics either.

          • Pasadena Trojan

I heard of Red Saunders having a heart attack while having an affair, I have heard of Johnny Cheetin’ Wooden, if still alive should still be on probation, I heard how you took care of Steve Lavin and Ben Howland by chasing them out of town. You chased the ruins baseball coach out of town, the one before you hired the current one. Once again, you have no room to talk.

        • Mrhawaii

7.5 mill a year would be my dream job too!

          • jim

Money talks. Too bad SC hasn’t figured that out in their football program.

          • Mrhawaii

Too bad Larry Scott (dead weight) hasn’t figured this out either.

          • jim

Larry Scott is a joke(contrary to what Bill Walton would tell you).

    • marvgoux1

$4 million at IU vs $2.6 million at f uucla…

      • jim

        Money talks. Everything else walks

      • j metaphor

I’d do that deal and I’m not even used to the bugs in Indiana.
He can hire both his kids and they can all live happily ever after.
In the meantime, nobody from his # 2 recruiting class will go to Indiana, they will all be Bruins anyway.

  • Pete

How about, how much can the freshman defensive lineman contribute? Is it too much to ask them to perform at a championship level in 2017 or is 2018 season, along with a experienced OL the year they make a serious run at a national championship? I’m assuming Darnold comes back on 2018.

    • Sas

Marlon Tuipulotu will be on the field. He’s a sure fire run stopper from what I’ve been hearing.

  • LamontRaymond

Like we should have done with RBs coach Tommie Robinson, we have to back the truck up to keep our top 2 hoops assistants – Bland and Hart. Get it done, SC! Don’t act like a second tier program.

    • marvgoux1

Like a mid-major program like Cal State Bakersfield?

    • Independent_George

If Hart is the top recruiter, then he also whiffed with Stanley Johnson and Billy Preston. Until O’Bannon (where UCLA essentially said we will take you, but we like other kids better), Jason Hart had not recruited a MacDonald’s all-American to USC.

If Hart is such a good coach, then why does the blogger complain about USC’s strategy, player development and player retention.

Like Robinson (the top recruiters are Martin and Nansen), his loss is not program defining.

  • USC jojo

“……..and I can vouch….” Now that, my friends, is ‘Inside’ reporting.

    • j metaphor

He’s the man. (and his own inside source)

      • USC jojo

        LOL!

  • Sas

If Boatwright and Metu stay we’ll be tough next year. Add in Charles O’Bannon Jr, Victor Uyaelumno, and Jordan Usher and that’s a heck of an incoming class to throw in with the returnees.

  • Mrhawaii

Andy Enfield is the Pat Haden of BB coaches.

    • Pasadena Trojan

At least he is not buying players like Johnny Cheetin’ Wooden.

      • j metaphor

        There you go again, PT.

I suggest therapy, you may have a case of PWKYA (Post Wooden Kicking Your A)Syndrome

      • Mrhawaii

        No, just stealing from charities.

  • Pasadena Trojan

He will just pay them to go to Indiana. That is the only thing he learned coaching at ugly and the philosophy of Johnny Cheetin’ Wooden.

    • j metaphor

Wow, all of those losses to the best basketball coach of all time really hurt you didn’t it, PT?
Was your kid on a Trojan team?
Your obsession with John Wooden runs deep and dark.

  • Jethro G Sabbath

    What’s your deal?
