USC assistant coach Tony Bland has spoken to UC Santa Barbara about its coaching vacancy. USC assistant coaches are in demand this week. I’m hearing if offered the job Bland would take it.

If a promotion or the same position at a “better” program comes by, most coaches are going to leave. Does anyone think Enfield wouldn’t leave if a school with a better bball pedigree than SC came calling?
Don’t know because we don’t know what Enfield’s desire will be if he has a chance to move. The questions are: Does he want to build his own program at USC and be given credit for being a great coach. A great program would be going to the sweet sixteen, final four, beating the big boy schools and winning the tournament and a championship and consistently doing this over and over again. Or will he use USC as a stepping stone. He has one more year on his contract. We will find out within a year or so from now.
I’m thinking Lynn Swann is getting Andy Enfield’s contract extension paperwork drawn up as we speak.
USC’s a mid-major hoops program and always has been. Virtually irrelevant compared to the top tier programs.
Enfield would leave for a truly major program in a heartbeat if he were offered, I bet, But I don’t believe that kind of offer is coming. If SC ever gets into the Elite 8, that will be the new USC hoops problem. If we lose Boatright and Metu, that won’t be happening anytime soon.
Jack,
Jacobs and Jovanovic leaving and not getting picked after getting their NBA evaluations should be ultimate lesson for Metu and Boatwright. If they listen to the coaching staff and NBA scouts this time around everything should take care of itself. Well find out soon enough.
Sas,
I know you’re always optimistic about USC players staying. I remember you thought JuJu and Adoree were going to stay. I think a lot of us fans have a very difficult time understanding where these players sit, as in they are in a different universe.
And often, they obviously and absolutely don’t listen to advice from staff, scouts, league reps, etc. Many simply become FAs or lower draft picks. People, not just kids, tend to think they are special and will buck the odds.
I think Metu and Boatwright will simply do whatever they want, despite more conservative advise, and a lot has to do with how much they enjoy school and the academic work required. Let’s face it. Some of these athletes are simply not students and can’t wait to leave that grind, no matter their curriculums.
I hope they stay too, but for all you and I know, they’ve already made up their minds one way or another.
Let’s just hope they are smarter than than the last two that left.
My guess would be that Boatwright is gone and Metu stays. Just a hunch. Boatwright was more heralded out of high school and may have a bigger ego. Just call it a hunch.
Since you’re on a hunch, what realistic position would BB play?
I’m not a big fan of BB. He would probably play a stretch 4. He can’t guard a 3 and he needs to get stronger and develop a post game. He should stay but Metu is more important for your team, IMO.
I’m leaning that way also, but expecting the worse.
Boatwright just has the body language of a guy who already has his mind set on the NBA. He’s nowhere near athletic enough to be as big of a mismatch in the NBA as he is in college but he can’t change that by staying in college either.
No!!!! One more year!!!
Bye Bye Bobby “Blue” Bland!
Hope not.
The Gouchos still play basketball? The Thunderdome is still there? Do they still throw tortillas in the arena? Not close to a lateral move – a step WAY down. Wish the best for Tony, but he’ll have a much better opportunity after next season if/when the Trojans make the Elite 8.
Hart got a new contract, probably with a raise. Bland wants one too.
All assistants aspire to be head coaches. It’s a great move for him, absolutely no expectations and building from the ground up with a great home court.
He’ll get one. SC needs to show it’s serious about hoops.
Wyking Jones just hired as new HC at Kal! 2 brand new door mats! UDub & Kal!
Cuonzo Martin bailing on Cal for Missouri……Not a good sign.
Yep! Cuonzo always wanted to go back home. Doesn’t hurt to have father/son Porter on the Mizzou team.
That helps us. Cuonzo locked up Ivan Raab from the Pac12 . He was a good recruiter. Glad he left.
✅ Agree
I’m a bit old school. I think most players should stay at least 3 years. I would include TJ Leaf in that as well. I can see Ball leaving but it’s crazy where things are now.
Would you have stayed in school if someone offered you a job starting at seven figures?
Only the top players get that kind of money. Many marginal players fall through the cracks, like Metu and Boatwright. There are more casualties than successes.
UCSB basketball? Who knew?
