USC Morning Buzz: Some Notes After Six Spring Practices

It’s time for a Sunday notes column on USC spring football, starting with some of the new faces that could be starting next season.

Excerpt: The weakside linebacker will be someone new. During spring drills, it’s sophomore John Houston, who played mostly on special teams last season. Defensive tackle Marlon Tuipulotu is a true freshman but the coaches inserted him into starting lineup during Saturday’s scrimmage.

The kicker is currently freshman Michael Brown, with starter Matt Boermeester suspended after an incident involving a female student. Imagine a game coming down to the little-used Brown next year? Full column here

  1. Scott,
Great job covering all of the negative aspects of the USC football team in your column. Not a single possible downside was ignored.

    • This is great site to find out all negative stuff on USC as long as you understand the author and realize about 20% is legit. Like watching Fox news or CNN you need to understand the source and agenda.

        • marvgoux1, For me, SW’s day by day negativity is something I ignore. The Bloggers who post on SW’s website often present sound opinions and interesting factual information. You are one of those. Uncle Rico, i believe, overall, enjoys this Daily News Trojan Message Board.

        • I think a significant group of us are here to hear breaking news from other users in the comments section. True.

      • I didn’t say that but you nobody can tell now because for some reason my comment was removed.
I really didn’t think it was “unlawful, threatening, abusive, libelous, defamatory, obscene, vulgar, pornographic, profane, indecent or otherwise objectionable”
        I know it wasn’t pornographic.

  2. Kind of like a game coming down to the little-used Boomeester. Oh, wait…

  3. SW is the soothsayer that stands behind Caesar and warns him to beware of The Ides of March.

  4. What a great opportunity for these young kickers to prove they can be great. Practice builds confidence.

  5. What’s the deal with center Justin Dedich is he going to commit to USC? Also, who are the Offensive linemen on USC 2018 radar?

    • Dedich may not have been offered yet.He plans to visit possibly spring game. His visit will get offer. Tommy Brown OT MD, Steven Jones OG,.We offer local players about this time/ summer .Out of state we have offers to 3 tackels.Coaches are talking to few more.
Brown is high on list.2018 we will have limited spots.15-19 all depends on total guys on rides (85). E J Price may return. I think we only take 2-3 OL. Defense will be HUGE class get.
Qb,Rb,2-3 wr, Te, Ol -2, rest Defense.

          • Yes sirree, if some of what’s being said actually happens, it’ll be as bid or bigger than our DL haul this year. Fight On!

        • Sewell is at top of list. A welcome addition to Poly family.
Jackson Carmon we would move mountains to get. He’s #1 OT in class. He loves USC , will visit ,think he stays Ohio. We have many total offers out in this class. Many 5 and high 4* , the defensive side will be a class of the Century for us…provided we win come fall.

          • The OT from Mater Dei said SC hasn’t been talking to him lately. I think his dad played for Alabama and they’re the lifelong favorites.

          • What’s your thoughts on OL recruiting? I think we will be very selective.2 maybe 3 if they are must takes. I just think our defensive gets will be crazy good. Did you see that the recruiting boy genius ,kid with the inside on speed dial.Drew ” lock” Krinsky was accepted to USC..will attend.
The kid prodigy made it fun this year

          • I like Penei Sewell right now. He’s the kid I’ve been hoping we can lock up early. But it looks like we’re leading for the Center from Temecula now with the offer. Garry Paskweitz said a few days ago that the OL class is down this season, but I think we have to go hard right now for the big fish like Jackson Carman while we have the momentum with us from last seasons finish. He may be an Ohio kid but when you win you can get in the ear of an 18 year old kid. It’s possible. We took Chuma Edoga and EJ Price from the Georgia Bulldogs. The top two OTS in Georgia two straight years and we sold them. I like our chances with all three. Everyone will say that Carman is a sure Ohio St get or a Nick Saban jewell.but we’re knocking on the door with him. Lots of time for things to play out but to add….My #1 concern going into this season is Edoga and Roy Hemsley starting for the first time.

  6. Who has stood out as the punt returner and kickoff returner thus far this spring? I watched K “Pie” Young highschool tape he looks natural at both. Velus Jones, Greg Johnson and Jack Jones tapes look good as well.

  7. New heroes are always on the horizon for USC football. That’s what proven long-term success is all about and I have no doubt some unknown Trojan talents will show up big in 2017 to add themselves to the list of crucial players for USC.

  8. OK sports fans. Who would you rather have as a BB coach? Frank Martin from So. Carolina, Gonzaga’s Mark Few or Steve Alford?

  9. Houston has been doing well so far. Good to hear. Hope he adds some more muscle and weight before fall camp.

  10. “And this does not even consider the wide receivers, who are
inexperienced following the departure of starters JuJu Smith-Schuster
and Darreus Rogers. USC might have a lot of young wide receivers, but right now only Velus
Jones and Michael Pittman have stood out among the group.”

I thought that Deontay Burnett sort of stood out among the WRs at the Rose Bowl…
