USC Morning Buzz: The Scholarship Offer Is Real Blessing

Since I offered some spring cliches earlier this week, here’s one for recruiting that is really old. Does every high school recruit have to say they are “blessed” when they receive a scholarship offer?

It’s sort of like when a recruit makes a college visit. Does anyone ever say they had a bad visit?

And here’s one on early enrollees: We know they should be going to their high school proms. If they are “blessed,” they can still go to college for the spring semester, and still attend their prom if they live close enough to their college.

Meanwhile, in other news, ESPN draft analyst Mel Kiper has JuJu Smith-Schuster going to the Minnesota Vikings with the 48th pick in his latest mock draft.

  1. Scooter,
Not every kid says he likes the school he visited. I know a lot of young people who did not like the visit to a college and that is why they went to another college. When you receive a $70k a year scholarship to USC, you are either blessed athletically or academically. It is a blessing to them to receive such an item as free tuition to a great school. Don’t be so jaded. Get off the soccer crud and re-embrace college football. It pays for your soccer clothes.

  2. Nothing wrong with saying your “blessed” to get an offer. It is a recognition of the God-given talent that you have been blessed with and is not an arrogant response that some give. What do you want them to say? “I deserved it”?

    • Painters, poets and athletes frequently allude to being blessed. They need to feel in touch with something higher in order to achieve great things.
I’ve never heard a lawyer or an accountant (or the blogger) refer to being blessed. I wonder why.

      • Nobody is sticking a microphone in the face of most lawyers, accountants or others. Plenty of them including myself feel blessed for the skills and achievements we have. We all should.

        • Nice thought, G.T.
Most of the folks I know are lawyers or accountants. And, although we don’t communicate with each other via microphone, I can’t recall a single one of them thanking God for anything. As a matter of fact, when I once opened the office door of a fellow attorney before trial and found him saying a prayer, he apologized and said he didn’t know what came over him. Let’s just say this particular individual had plenty of things to apologize for —but saying a prayer wasn’t one of them.

  3. It’s just a dumb cliche Americans like to say to explain their good fortune. Ironically, being “blessed” often implies that some higher power “chose” to “bless” you over others, which can be interpreted to imply some kind of superiority (which I think is the opposite intent of why the cliche is used).

    • Atheist, Anarchist, Flustered Pagan Democrat, Which is it ole Boy ? Do you have any God-given skills ?

  4. Does Whining Wolfie even know how it feels to be blessed?
That for the individual feeling blessed it’s an sign of gratitude.

  5. Never expect to hear a reader express that they are blessed by reading these blogs so that is something right?

    • Good point. We have over looked the ability to read. There are many of blind people who would love to read with their eyes. I am very blessed to have eye sight. Thank you Dear Lord.

  6. Thousands of kids play Highschool sports thousands do not even get a scholarship to attend a major University. That in itself is a blessing (blessed).

  7. One must believe in the ultimate all mighty, which is our lord to understand why people say there blessed. Some people are lost so they write ” Cliche’Eric ” quotes about people that are blessed.

  8. Getting a USC full ride scholarship IS a blessing from God !!!! USC gives you a fully paid 4 year opportunity worth over $250,000, including a free education & degree worth a lifetime of future contacts and potential; free room, board, and meals for 4 years; a chance to be on national TV for exposure to a future pro career – and all you have to do is show up and play the game that you love already. Its a no lose situation.

Wolf needs to take his liberal atheist attitude and shut it…. A USC scholarship IS a blessing no other way to describe it.
