  1. So now you coaching, since Coach Helton is not. Funny how you figured this chart out all by yourself. Com’On Man!!!

  2. Falaniko, Pola-Mao, Godfrey, Grimes, Jones, all the talk about defense is great, but I’m thinking special teams are going to really be lit!! Fight On!!

  3. Ah hem! DT Jay Tufele? Kicker Chase McGrath? WR Randall Grimes? OT Jalen MacKenzie?

Depth chart going into Game 1 is not as important as those new recruits and red shirts who have a strong likelihood of substantial playing time by Game 6 to Game 12. The entire 2017 recruiting class could be seeing substantial playing time by, say, Game 10.

    • Exactly, there are so many players out with injuries and I’m glad Coach CH decided not to harm these 18-21 year old kids any further during a meaningless Spring game.

    • Don’t have much confidence in the DT’s if one of the best USC has is a true frosh.

Before anybody say Tuipoluto is special…supposedly Eddie Vanderdoes and Ellis McCarthy were too.

      • There was the counter-example: Leonard Williams. After 1 week in camp, they asked him if he felt overmatched and confused, to which he responded candidly, but with no arrogance: “Not so much…I expected it to be worse.”

There are guys like that–exceptions to be sure–but it does happen. And maybe Marlon is one of them.

        • But Leonard Williams true frosh year was in 2012. Where did USC end up in 2012? All I know is that USC couldn’t stop Hundley and UCLA. The defense was not very good for USC.

I would say this though Williams had a better true frosh year than Ellis McCarthy had and the same with Eddie Vanderdoes.

Even with Shaun Cody as a true frosh USC didn’t have a great defensive season. Cody came on strong at the end of the year though but he was still a bit undersized at DT.

Bottom line…I don’t trust true freshman at all…especially at QB and the offensive and defensive lines.

You can get away with hit once in a while. USC had Winston Justice at RT I believe as a true frosh and USC went 13-1 if I’m not mistaken.

          • Williams was the best player on the field for three seasons. He’s not a get to the QB guy buy he was so good at holding up the line of scrimmage while forcing the offense to back peddle and avoid him. He had the size to push back OL and be a pest for opposing QBS.
As for Hundley. USC was dominated by his quick passes while getting bullied by blocking WR’s. That play wore us down. But yeah Hundley wasn’t even that great when you look back at those games. Passing wise he was solid, but the back breaker was his 7 yard gains on third downs. That had a lot to do with the quality of LB’S USC had out there. Anthony Sarao was undersized, Sua Cravens should have been playing safety his junior year. But SC LB’S tried to take away the lanes between the Tackles and Hundley was just more athletic to get around the edge and he made us pay.

          • The whole point again is that if a true frosh DT is the best a team has…then obviously you must not be very good and it’s proven over and over and over. I have never seen a conference championship team with a true frosh starting DT. If you can name one feel free to let me know.

Tougher and more seasoned experienced DT’s can create havoc up the middle and it really disrupts the play of an opposing offense.

And yes…Hundley was great on those 7 yard gains for a key 1st down. It takes all the energy out of the defense.

      • I agree. But we lost Vanderdoes, McCarthy, Fitts, because of Kiffin and sanctions and Bigelow has been injured his whole career pretty much so no #1/#2 DT there for us. Plus Noah Jefferson left school which was a disappointment

  4. I don’t see Carr over Ware at RB. Correct me if I am wrong. Ware will be another year older and stronger than last year. Should be a real asset.

    • You may be right, although RoJo II is the counter-example, and Carr is a big talent, per his “clippings”.

Even less likely is Joseph Lewis at 3rd string. Lewis is supposedly a “really” top talent, and many recent WRs have made their marks right away at USC.

Both points undermine Scott’s assertion that Helton should issue a depth chart Right Now.

  5. How about a depth chart on writers covering USC? Would Scott make the top 10?
