Mike Gillespie Keeps Going

USC and UC Irvine split two games the past two nights. But there are now two notable facts as the Trojans and Anteaters met again. Former USC and current UC Irvine baseball coach Mike Gillespie is going strong as he turns 77 next month. And Gillespie is 15-5 against USC since he took over at Irvine.

    “Inside UC Irvine.”

The last USC baseball coach to win a NC deserves the respect.

Gillespie is a great coach and USC baseball has never recovered from Garrett’s horrible decision to fire him.

By the way, is this the first baseball post from the Blogger this year? I assumed he didn’t know USC had a team.

Why don’t you mention that Irvine’s 14-20 this year?

    • JustOwns

Ok Gooberhead, but still 15 – 5 vs the mighty bozos whatever UCI’s W/L record this year.

        5160!

Next year will be 20 since we last one a ‘nc’ and it was under Gillepsie

In 2002 I took my 7 year old nephew to see the Trojans play the U of AZ in Tucson. USC won that game and he got to see Jeff Clement, our AA catcher. Gillespie saw my nephew standing behind the dugout holding his baseball and pen and brought him into the dugout to meet all the players and they all signed his baseball. He didn’t shake the smile on his face for a week! Gillespie had no idea I was a USC alum. All these years later my nephew still has that ball. Mr Gillespie is a class act thru and thru.

I saw him in the airport returning from a game with the team and he was nothing but class!

Gillespie is a great coach, who enjoyed big success at every stop in his career. But he got stale and complacent at the end of his run at SC, and that was the first step in our downfall. He also has enjoyed success at Irvine, but based on his current record this year, it appears he is wearing out his welcome there also.

Stale sounds good compared to what USC has endured since he left.

Agree. If we make a move after the season, do you think we show some guts and go after a big name?
