Morning Buzz: Is USC The Best Team In Los Angeles?

USC’s celebrated the Rose Bowl victory just about everywhere: The Lakers and Kings acknowledged it. Clay Helton was grand marshal at the Long Beach Grand Prix. So this leads to a question: Is all the attention because the 52-49 victory was so memorable? Or was it because the rest of L.A.’s teams have done so little? The Lakers and Kings are awful. The Angels are mediocre. The Dodgers can’t get to the World Series. The Rams were a joke. UCLA was down last season. Who else?

So USC wins a Rose Bowl and it’s a big deal. Saying someone is the best team in Los Angeles isn’t much right now but USC might be.

  1. the kings are awful? 2 cups in the last 5 years…. yeah ok, awful….. Missed this playoffs this year by 1 spot with the star goalie out 3/4 of the season. Hmm….. ok

  2. Sounds a lot like it was back in 2003-2005 when Pete Carroll was king – New York City would give anything to have a focus on the 5 boroughs during college football season – anything.. Fordham University was once a mighty power – Lombardi was one of the ‘Seven Blocks Of Granite’ (1934-36).

College football is the NFL’s AAA minor league system and the NFL should be paying all college football program an annual fee for the

development of the players prior to their arrival to the NFL regardless of the difference in pro=/college ball. Same with the NBA.

You’re right about the professional also-rans here esp. the LAA – 17 years Scoscia’s had that gig – 17 – no one gets that kind of deal in sports i.e. Sutter – top tier programs run by solid mgmt. demand ,success which is why USC will be the focus of all sports coverage come August 2017 – it is expected!

    • I cannot believe they have not promoted Scoscia to the front office and gotten a new manager. Way overdue. Yes, it is a USC kind of town and the party starts in August.

      • Scoscia became the ‘de facto’ gm when Tony Reagins was unable to grasp the complexity of being a GM after his sole success story – Teixra back in 2009. Scoscia traded Mike Napoli (played on three world series teams – CLE, BOS and TX) for Vernon Wells. When he came on as manager in late 2000 Stoneman gave him one pick for coach -because Stoneman gave him (Scoscia) three outstadning coaches – Bud Black, Ron Roenicke and (ta daaa!) Joe Maddon – Scoscia’s choice? Mickety Hatcher.

DiPoto was hired in late in 2011 and gone by July 2015 but thankfully he got Hatcher sacked. His conflicts with Scoscia were legendary but neither he nor Scoscia are the reason the team is a chaotic mess It’s all Arte Moreno thinking he was a GM just like Jim Buss thought he was for the Lakers. Moreno wanted and got a trifecta of busts – CJ Wilson, John Hamilton and Mr. Humility Albert (barely over the ‘mendoza line’ ) Pujols.

The Angek clubhouse is a graveyard of ambition and anyone with any sense of any kind of post-season aspirations, if they have a trade clause, would be nuts to stay there with Scoscia as manager.

  3. Negative Nancy.

Sounds like the Pete Carroll era: USC as the hottest ticket in LA. I like the way the football program is trending in all aspects.

      • Ironically, ucla lost to Utah who scored 52 on the bruins.
        Utah = world beater.

        • Yes Utah did score 52 in the 52 – 45 UCLA loss.

vs Alabama 52 – bozo 6 and zero TD’s; but, the bozos kicked a 45 yard FG down 36 points. “Hee, Hee.”

          • The sad part of all this is that USC scored more in the Rose Bowl in 2 games than ucla scored in any 2 home games. Very sad.

  4. SC football is the biggest ticket in town and it has a lot to do with one of the truly greatest and most exciting wins in Rose Bowl history. To the victors go the spoils.

Being the “best team in L.A.” isn’t nearly as important as returning to power and dominance in the football arena. USC has taken some big steps in that direction and now we have a QB for the ages – another reason why USC football is in the news all the time.

With the draft coming up, that’s just another reminder that USC leads the nation in first rounders and overall picks. That has nothing to do with the other teams in L.A.

    • At last, the USC Trojan’s Football Program has returned to Power and Dominance in the nation’s NCAA Football Arena. Pay attention, Owned. FIGHT ON !!!
