USC Morning Buzz: Time For A Monster Podcast

I was a guest on the TrojanSports.com podcast, where I talked about the football team coming out of spring practice, USC players in the NFL draft and just about any other football topic including some memories of the Pete Carroll era.

    • I haven’t listened to it yet. Will turn it off its just WW being SW. The message board is full of W haters.only one supporter.Swanson..
Srater leaving R/SC has left big gap,and he was only there few months.

      • I’m waiting for a teeth cleaning, but I cannot listen to 2 and a half hours of a podcast. They have to be an hour or less. When you add SW it’s a definite NO.

        • Try listening to the first half hour [on the subject of potential weaknesses in the starting line up], Sam. As Sergio Mora the Boxer once said, “Some scary thoughts —-but maybe we should be thinking them.”

  1. What a pleasant surprise. Scott spills his guts for 2 hours plus and comes across as wholly engaging. The only downer (and it ain’t Scott’s fault —he’s just “telling it like he sees it”) is that he clearly thinks the lack of depth on this team could lead to our being left out of the play offs. But, all in all, fascinating interview —-and the most nuanced look at what makes Scott tick any of us are likely to get.

    • With your review, I’ll probably listen now.Didn’t know if my ears could withstand the voice.

      • I don’t think you’ll be disappointed, Peter. Scott comes across as someone with a pretty ferocious desire not to please. He said one thing that is really gonna stick with me —- he doesn’t write anything that the players probably aren’t saying to each other in private. When he points out a problem at a particular position (and when ISN’T Scott doing this?), it may annoy us as fans but there’s a good chance it’s as close as we’re gonna get to feeling the pulse of the team.

          • Almost, Sam. I had to fast forward thru some of the stuff about the Pete Carroll era.

          • I have to listen to it while working and driving. I like Swanson and the guys but some of the banter could drag on. I’ll definitely listen to the first half hour on the way home from work.

          • I was hearing some stuff that no one else has voiced quite so clearly—- our receivers’ unimpressive spring, the lack of depth at corner, the thinness at linebacker. Scott was upbeat about the possibility that things could fall into place by August, but he was up front about the concerns he has.

          • Let’s just take comfort that Garry P, Dan Weber, even the guys at Reignoftroy were impressed with Tyler Vaughns and Michael Pittman this spring. It’s good to hear all sides buy when it AS it’s a head scratcher.

          • I basically like Swanson.Hes really trying.Sometimes to hard. He’s gone to a self pity mode when criticized……He’s posted past few months some excellent recruiting basics on players we are after, for me this is what I want.

        • Appreciate your input.Ill give a listen tonight.Having been deeply involved in sports on many sides, many years.I’ve come to appreciate a writer with true insight.Writing can be much like a coach, coaching.Good writers have color, colors you want to see ,yet when you really see their piece its Blk and white. Both sides. The deeper the Blk the deeper the White ,the better the writer. You need both.
With SW I see mostly one color.sometimes it provides insight.Yet ive never once read it as a story broken.

          • Very thoughtful reply, Peter. And I mostly agree —-but I’d soften the appraisal of Scott somewhat. Scott isn’t one of those writers who’s gonna go out of his way to cover every side of a story. His pieces are comprised of a series of short bursts of inspiration —-he gets bored with an angle pretty quickly and moves on. Think of him as one of those actors who doesn’t try to dazzle the audience with technique or artistry —-but always makes them watch the screen.

        • Years back I thought he had a great mug for radio. Now I think his voice is best suited for newspaper. His writing best for anonymous suggestion box.

    • Definitely a good interview – if VERY long. Scottie makes a great point – why do certain people who claim to hate him feel compelled to visit his blog every day? I think what most people would argue is that the negativity is fine – it’s his brand – but when something truly positive happens to the program, Scottie’s not recognizing it just dings his credibility a bit. He would argue that everyone else in Trojan Land is already lauding those positive things, and why should he do it too? It just calls into question his judgement. But hey, I’m another who keeps coming back….

      • Listening to Scott talk about not being interested in pleasing the players or the fans reminds me of something that was said about Gore Vidal (by his grandfather)—“His greatest strength was that he didn’t need to be loved.” That said, I agree that Scott dwells a bit too much on the dark side of each story angle —-but, like those old Vidal television appearances, it seems once you’ve established a a working public persona, it’s hard to pull out.

  2. Why is there so much focus on the negative? USC football has a lot to look forward to. Enjoy the ride everyone. Highs and lows make it more enjoyable.
