A Renovated-Coliseum Complaint

Here’s what a season-ticket holder emailed me about being forced to pay the new seat fee without knowing where the seats will be located in a renovated Coliseum:

“The one thing that stood out that I was unaware of before . . . is that you have to commit to paying the “gift” BEFORE you pick your seats. The only thing that a (booster-club) member will know at the time of the commitment and gift payment is that the seats will be some where in the shaded area for that level of membership. Once every booster-club member at any particular person’s level has either committed or declined which takes about two months or so to get through everyone, then in priority order each member who committed will be able to select their seats for that level of commitment.

“In essence, not only are we paying a gift for worse seats than we have now, we are being asked to do so before we even no how much worse the seats will be. I presume that the athletic department does know which is why they are forcing a commitment before hand.  Better to deal with the inevitable fall out after already being paid.  Not happy!”

  1. So whose fingerprints are all over this? Nikias? Swann’s or Haden’s? Why no mention of Haden, Scott why is that? Where is Pat Haden? Was there ever any accountability of what he did last tear? Why is it he was allowed to continue on like some connected pol working for the demokratiche party after he got busted?

Where is Pat Haden? Why no mention of his hands in any of your posts about the new seating arrangements?

    • Exactly – we need the beat reporters (and bloggers) to get up in their business and figure out who the decision-makers were in this situation. It’s that lack of transparency which is killing those (like me) who are not happy with the new proposed design.

  2. The hired help abuses the real Trojan Fans.Watch who defends the hired help.

  3. Ok SW. We all know the DLR Group is the Architect. And we know the Coliseum is a National Historic Landmark. In order for the project to get approved it has to go under a rigorous process to ensure that the structure’s historic features remain intact. There’s is only one group in Los Angeles that can sign off on any changes to a landmark. Without their approval its a no-go.
As far as what committee gave the ok on the design of the Tower? Don’t know. The rest is up to you to do some investigative reporting. Go get-um Fido.

    • “The rest is up to you to do some investigative reporting.” You know you’re talking to sw right?

    • If that place is historic then Tommys on Rampart and Pinks should be designated as National Historic Landmarks.

  4. Everyone that I have talked to, looks at this coliseum thing as incompetence. And that it is! You are going from 93,000 to 77,000. But you are also taking about 2200 fans(as I understand it and I could be wrong) and putting them behind the glass where you can’t hear their cheers. That’s less fan noise from 18,000 fans. If you are at home, you want the crowd noise. Go to a high school game against a team from another state where there are 18,000 that are screaming for your team and see how much noise they can generate. We’re losing all that crowd noise. For What? So we can have lounges and bars and a lot of other unnecessary things for the rich. I’m really surprised that they don’t put in a bowling alley, miniature golf course and a fitness center. That’s incompetence. It’s not only incompetence, I think that it’s a scandal. That’s the angle that hasn’t been reported. It sounds to me like what they are doing is walling off the super rich SC fans so that they don’t have to rub shoulders with the common average guy on the street SC fans. Can the ordinary SC fan go behind the glass to buy drinks and sandwiches? If not, it sounds like a gated community inside the coliseum for the rich. What say you?

  5. Advise x 2 – make sure the mule isn’t lame before you buy the mule. Don’t trust Mike Rae’s caddy.

      • How can it be racist when I’m a rich, white guy? Just commenting that this issue isn’t really an issue and if you have to ask about the cost of the seats, you probably can’t afford them anyway. Downgrade your section and be happy with your new amenities.

  6. Mercedes Benz of Newport Beach doesn’t ask for a down payment with out me knowing what I am buying!
Car buyer: Am I getting an E series or a C series?
Sales man: Well you are going to have to pay first before I can tell you what you are getting.

  7. All the years. All the misguided anger and all the begging for attention has come to this for Wolf. A chance, however slim, to actually leave a legacy by spearheading the drive to keep the tower from being built. However we know he actually wants it to be built so he can whine and complain until the day he dies

    • Misguided anger? Did you bother to read about USC paying $5 million this last year to the last two incompetent football coaches USC hired? Wolf was absolutely right to be angry about both.

  8. I’ve posted before pointing out that this seat controversy can be resolved with the new pressbox and luxury seats being built above the rim of the Coliseum. Look north to the Rose Bowl for the simple solution. No one loses their current seats, and thereis no need for a reduction in seating down to 77,000. This idea has Pat Haden’s idea written all over it. The guy needs to be removed from USC’s current renovation project. On a different note, I received the brochure from Lynn Swann last week that included a depiction of the proposed plan. I do not like it because of the removal of existing seats. But, the Coliseum underwent major structural damage in the 1994 Northridge earthquake and there is not guarantee that it could survive another earthquake with all that added weight on top of the old conrete and seats in sections 5,6,7 or 8. I have been a season ticket holder for over 30 years and have sent USC $10,000.00 a year for my seats. I will not pay a $6,000.00 license fee for each of my same seats. The very simple solution for me is to file a lawsuit against USC for taking my seats when it attempts to do so. Perhaps it will obtain class action status. We’ll see. But I surely will not allow Pat Haden, Max Nikias, Lynn Swann, or anyone else in the Athletic Department to unilaterally take what I have paid for over all these years.
