Remembering Bryce Dejean-Jones

It’s been nearly a year since former USC basketball player Bryce Dejean-Jones was shot to death in a Dallas apartment. Here’s a look at Dejean-Jones and an interview with the man who shot Jones from Bleacher Report.

    • So only cops, criminals and bodyguards of the super wealthy have them.

    • What was the victim supposed to do after his front door had been kicked in and the unknown assailant was attempting to get in the bedroom door?

    • So I suppose it would have been better if the guy was beaten to death – no right to protect himself. As a Trojan, I am sorry for Bryce, but don’t make this a gun control issue.

    • I am most definitely not a second amendment fanboy, but this is an example where you can’t “blame” guns. The owner did everything he needed to be safe (many gun accidents are because of unsafe yahoos). If the man who shot Jones didn’t have the gun we would be reading instead about how his family wants justice because Bryce Jones escaped serious penalty (since he most likely would have beat the guy to a pulp, at the very least) because he is a pro athlete.

There is a tendency to excuse what would otherwise be bipolar or manic or antisocial behavior as “competitive” or “cares too much” if it is exhibited by an athlete. Bryce Jones had serious bipolar issues, but schools either washed their hands (USC, Iowa State) or rationalized it way as “he is just so competitive”, as if diving on the court for loose balls somehow absolves one from antisocial and dangerous behavior.

  1. There is nothing noble about pursuing and accomplishing ones goals in life at the expense of others….
