United Airlines Coliseum?

United Airlines has agreed to pay USC more than $70 million over 15 years for the naming rights to the Coliseum, according to SportsBusinessDaily. Exactly how this works has not been announced. It’s going to be pretty hard — not to mention tacky — if USC starts calling it the United Airlines Coliseum. And I doubt fans will ever go for it.

The funny part is just two weeks ago, when the media was given a preview of the renovated Coliseum seat plan, I asked about stadium naming rights and was told that USC was focused on naming the field. Stay tuned.

Oh, and great timing for partnering with United. If a game gets oversold, will you get dragged down the aisle?

No danger of the game being sold out.

    • tigerbalm2010

Maybe the only major Uni that has to drive an hour away for their stadium and not even welcomed by the local residents. Talk about stadium-envy!

      • marvgoux1

And instead of playing in the new stadium in Inglewood witch is right down the 405 from them, they signed a 30 year contract to keep driving 40 miles round trip to Pasadena.

      ugly travesty,
Do tell when the last time the Rose Bowl sold out for a ruin game? When Nebraska and Wisconin played against the ruins, it was mostly the visiting fans that made the place a sell out. Will Thug U aka ruinville hand out free tickets through the Star News and at Costco just so the Rose Bowl won’t be empty? Time will tell.

      • Pudly76

        Empty as their blog.

        • Pete

Ya! No kidding. Sometimes I go over there to see what delusional things the Bruin fans are saying and many times it like a ghost town.

        • tigerbalm2010

I still remember that epic post a few years ago when their blogger celebrated when they flipped a recruit from Sacramento St. and a fellow sad UGLY fan replied “Sacramento St? It’s come to this?” LOL

          • Pudly76

            Classic ruination!!!

      • gotroy22

They have to fill the end zones with grade school students who think they are going the Disneyland. Imagine their disappointment when they are dumped off at the Arroyo Seco and have to sit in the hot sun for 3 hours watching the ruins lose.

Nikias is officially a moron. Great fundraiser, but moron nonetheless.

  • 04Trojan

    Zing! Flow: 1 – USC/UA: 0.

  • tigerbalm2010

I have a feeling when the press box fills up, two big security guards will be approaching Wolfy.

    • Pudly76

I’d pay for a copy of that video!

      • USC jojo

They’ll be dragging him with a burger in his mouth and nacho cheese all over his sweat shirt.

        • Pudly76

          picturing it… yes! LMAO!

  • Evil Robot

Hmmmm, “The Rose Bowl, Presented by (fill in the blank)” seems to have conquered this impossible riddle of preserving tradition and still cashing in on naming rights.

Honestly, they could rename it the Scott Wolf Center for the Complaining Arts and every man, woman and child (you can even throw in T & Q) would still just call it The Coliseum. Did you ever tell people you were headed to “The Great Western Forum”?

    • Pasadena Trojan

Naturally, if you do name it the Scott Wolf Colisuem, all men would have to check in their man cards. It would be a violation to be a man. Scooter would not want to be intimidated.

    • marvgoux1

The Rose Bowl hasn’t preserved tradition. The first place Pac 12 team didn’t play in it this last season. This year it will be a playoff game site. Better get your software replaced.

      • Evil Robot

Well, I was mainly talking about the naming rights and avoiding something akin to the Poulan Weed Eater Bowl. Obviously, the playoff system has changed the structure of the entire bowl system and I’m happier that the Rose Bowl is part of the playoff rotation, rather than being a stand alone game that takes the highest Pac-12/Big-10 non-playoff teams. Some amount of change is inevitable and nobody seems to be too upset that it no longer selects the “traditional” match-up between the Pacific Coast Conference winner against a team from the east coast.

  • Pasadena Trojan

Scooter, your last line was appropriate and funny. Good job.

  • Eastern Ave.

This is Brilliant. Should have happened sooner.

  • Pete

This was reported by Michael Smith and John Ourand of Sports Business Daily.

  • Jack B

Very cool. it’s who you know and the Trojans used another grad school CEO connection to make it happen. Now, if we could just fix the baseball team.

    • Sas

Baseball team needs a change right now!

      • Jack B

I think Hubbs’s K was renewed last year, though I sure hope not. I doubt he’ll be let go now. Swann can only take on so many replacements and he’s already shown USC doesn’t care about women’s hoops.

Who knows how much they really care about baseball anymore? Maybe the job isn’t in demand because the last three coaches all failed miserably. Maybe USC baseball is viewed as a career killer now. Haven’t been decent in 20 years and the shadow of Dedeaux still looms.

        • Sas

Even at the regional in Lake Elsinore a few years ago we felt like an average team. It was just senior heavy. Hubbs better get it together because it’s a tired program.

          • Jack B

            Hubbs received a long-term K extension in Sept. 2016. We’re doomed.

  • rrayusc@yahoo.com

Well maybe they won’t need to milk the season ticket holders with there so called “Renovation Coliseum Gift Donation” anymore.
