USC Hires Women’s Tennis Coach

Alison Swain

Alison Swain, who won eight NCAA Division III titles at Williams College in Massachusetts, has been named women’s tennis coach at USC. That’s right, Division III. Swain has never coached anywhere but Williams, which has an enrollment of about 2,000. And she played at Williams too.

This is an out-of-the-box hire. But the silver lining is someone who coached at a JC or even a Division III school is probably well-equipped to coach a low-profile sport at USC. You are pretty much on your own in those sports, so sometimes it’s best to get someone used to doing everything themselves. You think Lynn Swann is going to spend much time thinking about women’s tennis?

  1. She hit the lottery ticket. To go from a division III school to a very presitigous school is what most coaches want. I hope she does well. We know Scooter doesn’t care for the hire. But Scooter, you aren’t the AD. Lt us see what she has before you give her the boot scooter. Do us all a favor and do not stalk her, err interview her. She will find you a little out there.

    • All females when they arrive on campus get the Wolf flyer outlining the dangers.

    • Williams is an extremely prestigious school academically. It’s consistently rated as the top liberal arts school in the nation. My niece played basketball there along with the niece of former Chief Justice Rehnquist. They are quite competitive in their division across most sports.

I would agree with Jack B. below as it speaks to Lynn Sean doing excellent research.

      • who cares about your dumb relative going there. You are still a loser ‘ruin who needs to get out of Dodge, and go spew your crap in Westwood. Why Wolf allows you on this site is beyond my comprehension.

        • I’m sure plenty of things are beyond your comprehension.

Nevertheless, it looks like a good hire.

        • Uh, your response to 88’s post was over the top stupid. He said it was a good hire

          • I guess, if you want to get back to the ultimate reasons, you’re probably right. After all, we must be politically correct. Just look at what the results would be if we didn’t let PC rule. Men wouldn’t be able to go into womens bathrooms and locker rooms. They wouldn’t even be able to shower with the women. Mercy me, we wouldn’t want that to happen. Heaven forbid, this country would actually start to look like back in the 50’s. We can’t have that.

  2. Great hire. Totally dominant coach, who was a great player herself. Winning 8 titles in 10 seasons at any level is incredible. 48-2 in NCAA tourney play. Amazing .889 winning %.

Swann slugged this one out of the park. Makes the Trakh women’s BB hire look all the more ridiculous.

    • You, nor anyone else, has any clue if this was a good hire. Only time will tell if it was or wasn’t.

You were also all over Helton being a great hire and then threw him under the bus after the Bama game

      • Actually I never thought Helton was a great hire and still don’t know if he’s a good hire. As a HC coach at USC, he’e been both very good and very bad (especially against STAN). Darnold’s the main reason for USC’s success and without him USC is probably a top 25-35 team last season. With 5-star boy Max Browne, we were always going nowhere.

USC’s women’s tennis coach hire comes in with impeccable and fantastic HC credentials over a full ten-year period. Helton came in with absolutely no permanent HCing experience and it showed big-time in early 2016.

Swain comes in with an amazing 8-NCAA title resume. Helton came in with a completely unremarkable resume and was basically hired by Nikias because he was viewed as a solid man with USC experience who wouldn’t embarrass the school after the Kiffin and Sark public disasters and Orgeron’s behind-the-scenes tirades.

  3. Bob Stoops just announced he’s retiring from OK as their head football coach – 56 years old – gone!

  4. wonder if she is related to the athelectic director…probaly just “keeping it in the family” as they say

    • Your female truck drivers lost to FL who lost to OK oh well there’s always gymnastics

  5. She needs a chance to show what she can do. Winning all those titles gives her some credibility. Wonder who was interviewed, and
turned down the job. Surprised no one from a DI school could have
been persuaded to come to USC. Obviously this happened since it took awhile to finally hire a head coach. Why doesn’t Mr. Swann get rid of Hubbs and hire the Cal Lutheran baseball coach who just won the national title.

    • Why doesn’t he go after the Vanderbilt coach who actually wins at an expensive private school

  6. “You think Lynn Swann is going to spend much time thinking about women’s tennis?” YES! The reason I think that he will spend time thinking about it is because he knows that Max and his country club board of trusties buddies care more about womens sports than football.
