Penn State has scheduled an announcement for Thursday that could be a contract extension for Coach James Franklin. I mention it because within the USC athletic dept., some have noted USC has not announced an extension for Clay Helton. And remember, Andy Enfield got an extension after the NCAA Tournament, even though Pat Haden extended his contract last year.
It’s SW’s job to know if CH and Swann are conducting any extension negotiations. So far, what we’ve got from SW on this is a big Nothing Burger, in the parlance of today’s so-called “narrative”.
SW is really grabbing straws on topics to bring up… I swear, USC football has 1-good year (after a 1&3 start that is) and Wolf is concerned about an extension on Helton’s contract? I want to see the shape of this football program after a few very talented players (who saved Helton’s bacon) leave.
I think I remember reading that CH’s contract was adjusted after the Rose Bowl win.
Personally, I think SC should wait until after this season to do anything. One reason SC would legitimately hold back is because of having to pay off both the Kiffer and Sark in significant amounts recently (Sark still pending). Of course, SW fails to point out this important fact about USC and how it would affect USC’s stance in all of its coaching contracts.

That ASU news is gonna do wonders for Todd Graham’s recruiting…… high school stars love talking to a coach whose contract is about to be bought out.

This whole thing is upside down… First of all, USC won’t spend the money to bring in a “top” notch HC like the other big programs do and then when the coach they bring in (who few would touch) has a decent year, then the money & extension is there.
Swann may be waiting to see if Helton ends up 5-0 or 2-3 on September 30th before committing. I’m guessing he’s got some former NFL connections on his short list.
Lynn Swann will start the conversation privately if Clay Helton beats Stanford.
Hope it works out better for them than it did for the last school to extend a head coach after almost beating USC. Cost ND 10’s of millions.

Not that I am old or anything, but I remember John McKay not being the mastermind everyone thinks he was, yet he did show improvement.
I think recent history needs to be taken in perspective. As long as the team is prepared and the coaches are working together, Helton is doing his job. If he makes immature stupid calls consistently and bucks the system or acts drunk, then there is cause for alarm.
