Saturday Buzz: Quarterback Matt Corral Decommits From USC

Quarterback Matt Corral, the five-star who is now at Long Beach Poly, has decommitted from USC. He is looking at Alabama, Florida and Georgia, among other schools. This does not surprise in the least. In February, I mentioned the possibility he would never arrive.

“I did decommit from USC,” Corral said in a statement to USA Today. “I have a lot of love for the Heltons and the USC football program. I also thank them for all the knowledge they have shared with me.”

USC offered Utah commit Jack Tuttle this morning but the quarterback said he is still committed to the Utes. Talk about a knee-jerk reaction by USC. But they should have seen this coming. Corral gets a lot of attention and was bound to want to shop around sooner or later. And I always wondered how he would coexist with Jack Sears.

UPDATED: For what it’s worth, I’ve also heard people with ties to Oaks Christian (Corral’s original high school) and USC were not thrilled with Corral’s commitment after his alleged altercation at the school. And it may be a coincidence, but USC offered Class of 2020 QB Bryce Young of Cathedral this afternoon.

UPDATED II: USC has also offered Class of 2021 QB Aaron McLaughlin of Buford, Ga., who attended last weekend’s Rising Stars camp.

A question for all our knowledgeable posters: What the hell happened here? Did we not kiss this kid’s butt enuff?

    • Sas

I didn’t see this one coning. Wonder what happened.

      • Sas

My buddy is telling me all about right now on the phone. I have to get lunch for the family. I will hit you up ASAP!

      • Michael Guarino

This is truly weird, Sam. I’ve read so many interviews in which this kid has talked about his “dream of playing for USC.” Somebody hurt his feelings —same as the Oaks Christian deal. He may be way too delicate to be the kind of leader we’ll need after Darnold.

        • Pudly76

Can’t believe this kid didn’t want to stay home and play. Be the hometown hero. But, at the same time, I’m wondering why we waited to offer another qb if it was SC who cut him loose.
          I’m confused…again!

          • Michael Guarino

            I’m with you. Can’t believe we didn’t have a Plan B…….

          • Sas

Well….He says he dropped us for good. Also rumor is someone from USC was saying that he’s a potential headache and it got back to Corral. Also Wayne Gretsky’s son stole his girlfriend and Matt went wild and the SC staff told him he cannot act that way over a girl and that there are many girls. That didn’t sit well wilt Matt. Still trying to figure out more. Bama is on him.

          • Clay Russell

If all of that is true then he needs to get out of L.A and we’re lucky to have missed him. Thx Sas

          • Sas

We’ll be fine with or without him. Lots if time to move on.

          • Clay Russell

Are you aware of what kind of relationship have we have with Justin Fields?

          • Sas

He’s on our radar for sure. My buddy told me that he may be in play for us.

          • Clay Russell

I think he’d fit well for what we seem to want to do with the offense. Being a PSU guy, you know he was watching that Rose Bowl.

          • Sas

Thing is he’s getting a lot of offers now. The kid from Alemany is also on the radar.

          • Clay Russell

Of course guys are after him. Previous staffs would’ve been better suited to landing him with all that we have going for us right now. I think recruiting is kind of soft with this staff given the brand and the seeming opportunities ahead.

          • Sas

I haven’t seen any indication that this staff is soft. If anything they don’t B.S. Lots of time still my good friend.

          • Clay Russell

They’re doing ok, but you’re forgetting what is was like in recruiting. #5 isn’t #1. Kiff and Sark would’ve done better this last go ’round. I’m not saying I’d want either back, but all staffs have strengths and weaknesses. Kidd and Sark were great recruiters, but soft in many other areas. Pete was a generational recruiter. Helton is not as good a recruiter as Kidd and Sark, but he’s much stronger in many other areas, character being first and foremost. However, for example, you can’t lose an Ed Orgeron from your staff and think your staff got better at recruiting.

          • Sas

We’re just getting started. #1 OT Jackson Carman will be at USC for 4 days June 18-21……We’ll be more than fine. Big things coming!

          • Clay Russell

That’s what we all want to see. I’m just not signing off on this staff yet. I supported them last year for the sake of sanity, but now they have to prove it. You have what you need, show me.

          • JustOwns

On no, not another blanket lock prognostication from Sammy, who admits he didn’t see Corral’s embarrassing Toejam decommit in his dreams

          • Pudly76

Remember Sam Darnold the three star commit. He brought our rankings down. I’ll still take him.

          • Clay Russell

I understand, but playing the 3 star game is like betting against the house. If I agreed to let you have all the 3 stars in the country and I had all the 5 stars, according to any service, I’d take them and we’d beat the tar out of you guys 10 times out of 10. You’d never take the deal to begin with.

          • Pudly76

Not what I meant, finishing fifth with the tree star Darnold lowering our ranking. We should’ve been second or third and depending on who you checked with we were. 24/7 composite had us at #2.. that’s all I meant.
Patience, my friend. Good things coming..

          • Clay Russell

I’m not impatient as I’ve been watching for some time. The action in recruiting is different for this staff and I’m not saying it’s an entirely bad thing. Maybe they focus more on personality or character than pure physical ability. I’m fine with that, but when you’re competing at the top level, it’s not Penn St in the Rose Bowl, it’s Alabama or Clemson in the National Championship. You better be able to match up.

          • Pudly76

Wholeheartedly agree, and seeing the emphasis on the lines this staff is putting in I believe we’re on our way. Also next year our defensive secondary may well AVERAGE 6’3″ 200lbs, the biggest and one of the fastest in the country.. All indications are we dropped this kid, and by the timing they went a long way to bring him in. We should just let him go. Fight On!

          • Clay Russell

Nothing to argue with there. Another good thing they are doing is addressing the relative lack of SEC type bodies by trying to dominate poly recruiting out west. It’s a smart move and helps address long term concerns. And just by the way, I supported and advocated early for that 3 star last year and he has to prove it this year as well. Fight On!

          • Pudly76

Our poly connection is still on its way with tufele, falo, faliniko and especially pili. 6’4″ 325 and from his high school video can slam dunk a basketball! He supposed to be a real sleeper in this class.

          • Pudly76

It’s early and you’re conclusion is a stretch, especially after the last two classes. We’ll see.

          • JustOwns

LOL. Five Star QB decommit excuses, excuses, excuses, loser bozo u refrain. Give it up Sambo.

Why just the other day, the bozo Rah-Rah’s were squealing loudly about Corral’s ability to throw a FB 65 yards accurately.

          • Pudly76

Funny thing is the limp wristed boy in westwood still can’t throw. The next game he wins will make it one in a row, no?

          • Michael Guarino

Funny, my friend [but you’re assuming there WILL be “a next win”]……
            #WithRosenYouNeverKnow

          • Pudly76

No, not really, just should there be a forfeit, that would make it one in a row.
BTW, when was the last time he won more than two in a row?

          • Michael Guarino

September 17th against BYU (just barely —-and it was ALL downhill from there)……

          • Pudly76

That’s what I thought, now that’s really funny!!! Don’t give me the credit, I couldn’t make this stuff up if I was paid. 5* recruit goes to ruination and fizzles….hawr…hawr….hawr!

            Up yours owns.

          • Pudly76

Adam maya also saying he was dropped. Too bad. Life goes on. Wish him adieu.

          • Sas

I’m hearing his attitude was the issue.

          • Pudly76

Yup. Had that worry when I saw some of his tweets when transferring, hope he straightens himself out.

          • Sas

I can see we’re all not worried. He was obviously not a Trojan like he claimed to be because his attitude and image was more important to him.

          • Pudly76

It’s too bad. He’ll probably end up in Georgia or Florida based on their rosters, but hey who knows. I was wondering what happened the last couple of weeks when he just seemed off at the elite 11 and 5* challenge. This seems to make sense now. Hope he gets his life to where he wants it.

          • Sas

He was “a Trojan his whole life”. Nah. We’ll find the real Trojans and look back on this as just a blessing in disguise.

          • Pudly76

Giminey Cricket, we let one kid go and the world ends? I’m still a little new here, is this normal?

          • Michael Guarino

            Yes.

          • JustOwns

Odd that Sammy, my sources tell me Corral thought bozo u SUCC’d.

          • Sas

            Like Ucl a bball.

          • Sas

            USC 36
            Ucla14

          • JustOwns

            Hee, hee!

I am shocked by your response Sammy.

Who would have thought you would link UCLA’s rivalry game loss LY with the Corral’s hilarious, embarrassing bozo u
            decommitment.

Hey Sambo, in how many games did the 4 – 8 Bruins fail to score a TD.

          • Sas

            Ucla loses.

            Heheheeeeeee!

          • JustOwns

But not 52 – 6. Only the bozo’s can say that.

Sambo, what was the rivalry game score in 1933?

          • Pudly76

Hey knucklehead, how many games did the 4-8 ruins lose last year?

          • Steve B.

Just an asshole Owns. Using a racist remark, and no one calls you out. Low life ‘ruin raises his brainless head out of the dirt once again.

          • Michael Guarino

Thanks, Sam. More and more, it sounds like we dodged a bullet the moment this kid said “goodbye.”

          • Sas

He’s good no doubt. But we’ll be fine.

        • Pudly76

24/7 already shows a crystal ball for Tuttle to USC, he’s a hard commit to Utah and said he won’t visit any other schools.
Isn’t that what Sears said last year before we started winning?

          • Michael Guarino

Nowadays, everybody says “this is forever” —-until something changes their mind.

          • Pudly76

No really baby, I love you. There’s no one else. Who could there be?

We’ll see what happens when we win our first four games and the hype train really starts moving .

          • Michael Guarino

Ha! Yeah, I guess by the time you get to be our age you’ve told every lie that can be told and heard every lie that can be heard. Only nice thing about it is you’re supposed to get pretty good at seeing it coming —I hope that’s true of USC in this case, Pudly76!

          • marvgoux1

That is what was so great about last year. Darnold exceeded our hopes.

        • marvgoux1

Darnold is now the gold standard for our recruits to meet.

      • Pudly76

Hard to say, but at least one website says it goes back to Oaks Christian and what happened there.
I don’t know though, seems like we’d have offered others already if it was our doing, no?

      • JustOwns

Say what Sammy????? How is it possible you didn’t know what Mr Corral was thinking. Don’t you scan every “I love bozo u” blog 24/7. LOL squared.

Corral is a smart guy and wanted no part of the Toejam FB team and forever bozo u family. Corral wants to compete, but at a better Univ.

No sow’s ear FB team for Mr. Corral.

        • Sas

          I’m not worried Rents.

          • JustOwns

            About what?

          • Sas

            Anything you have to say.

          • JustOwns

I see. So why do you respond to my comments with 15 seconds?

        • rrayusc@yahoo.com

Ok 2-7 in the PAC 12 and 4-7 overall
          UClownsLostAgain University

          • JustOwns

            Last 5 years, Mora (!!!) 3 – bozo u 2.

Interestly Ray, the 4 – 8 Bruins were able to score a TD in every game.

Can the 2016 Toejam FB team make the same claim? Take your time Ray.

  • Ed Garrett

interesting that usc offers theyre qb a scolarchip the same day that utah announces they are starting a lacross team, i guess someone is felling the presure,

    • Michael Guarino

      Brilliant.
      #Plato,Bertrand Russell,AndNow,EdGarrett

    • Jack B

Well, if it isn’t Bobble-Head Ed.

Try not shaking your head back-and-forth constantly and maybe your little blurbs would start making sense. Not really. But you do win the award for Speller of the Year. Hands-down little gutty.

  • Pinky Milky

Makes you wonder if this kid has other issues that USC found out about.

  • Pinky Milky

Gets into a fight at his school and leaves. Transfers to a school 45+ miles away, and one in the hood at that. Now this, hmmmmmmm

  • Jack B

USC has plenty of time to fill the QB spot. And…we’re already loaded at the position for the next three years.

Maybe Corral just wants to go to a school where he has a better shot at starting right away, like Rosen at ucla. Hah, hah, hah.

This is no big deal. The big deals for USC right now are OLs and DLs, plain and simple.

    • Pudly76

If my memory serves me right, Sam was a late addition at qb, and that worked out just fine.

    • Michael Guarino

Yeah —-maybe we should all calm down. Short term, you couldn’t be more right —-let’s bolster the lines, and win ourselves a national championship. All the rest will take care of itself —-probably as early as the next class……

      • Jack B

People want to get all freaked out. But there’s so much time to go. SC has a very organized staff and I’m sure they saw this coming. If they didn’t, all the more reason to cut this guy loose and let him play games elsewhere.

Recruiting Rule #1 – You don’t want guys who don’t REALLY want to be at your school. That’s huge.

        • Michael Guarino

True, Jack. [And, as a corollary, you don’t want guys who don’t know what the hell they want, and never will…..]

          • marvgoux1

Or guys who seem to have incidents wherever they go.

          • Michael Guarino

So true, marv. What is the answer employers LEAST want to hear in an interview when they ask why the interviewee applied? “The folks at ALL my previous jobs were jackasses.”

    • 04Trojan

Good point. Lots of time. Plus Sears. Thanks for calming me. I was just really hopeful for this kid to shine at USC.

    • Ray

      Jack nails it!

    • Sas

Ucla doesn’t even get our leftovers!

      • JustOwns

Anything that starts at bozo u would be considered “sloppy seconds” at UCLA.

        • Pudly76

If only you could get some.

  • Clay Russell

The article I read indicated that he would no longer even consider USC. Usually when someone decommits they at least say they are still considering the school even if it’s just lip service. To go from being a kid who was a strong recruiter for ‘SC to one who won’t even consider the school seems really strange. Hopefully someone will get the story soon.

If I felt like this was an ace recruiting staff that might have a shot at him, I’d tell them to get into the Justin Fields derby. Sorry to see Matt go whatever the reason.

    • Michael Guarino

Whatever the specific reason, Clay, I think it’s safe to say that a kid who jumps two schools in two years is a bit on the hypersensitive side.
      #LastThingWeNeedAtQuarterbackIsAHeadCase

      • Clay Russell

He can’t be doing all this w/o his parents involvement. The fact that he’s having these issues is an indictment on his parents. Long Beach Poly??

        • Pudly76

It might not be his doing, he might have been dropped. SC usually makes no comments about dropping a recruit, NCAA regulations, I think

  • Pasadena Trojan

Scooter, it was not a knee jerk reactions n. USC waited to see what carol was going to do. He made his move, then USC made there move. It is strategy

  • ANDYISWINNNNNING!!!!

He’s another Ricky Towns pro style statue QB!! Good riddance!

    • Jack B

I’m sure he’ll be better than Towns. But there’s plenty more where Corral came from, and with better legs! Give me those OLs and DLs! That’s the key to our next run of dominance.

    • Pudly76

He is said to be faster than Darnold, no matter, he’s gone and he’s never coming back.

      • ANDYISWINNNNNING!!!!

I agree w/Jack. We need to work on our OL/DL! The Mater Dei QB is our next target!

        • Pudly76

I do too. We should have a better chance of getting him without Corral than with him.

  • John Cracker

He’s obviously impressionable, perhaps even gullible.

His decision-making is even more questionable. Corral, as a Junior and the school’s star QB, get’s into a fight with the son of Wayne Gretzky,…Who was a Sophomore member of the school’s golf team….,At a HS basketball game…In front of the crowd!…Shows,…Well, it shows us why it’s “Georgia” and “Alabama” on his phones Caller ID, and not “Palo Alto”.

    • Clay Russell

That’s a really good point, but what are his parents doing in all this?

    • JustOwns

Typical Toejam whine. “Wool, Corral didn’t want to compete.”

      • Uncle Rico

If you don’t want to compete you head to UCLA for face huge. “Chosen One” even said he went to UCLA as a joke. Lavar approves of this message.

  • PHIL NEIMAN

Based on the timing, and his past issues, and I think this is more him being told to look elsewhere, as opposed to him waking up one day and deciding he rather play in the SEC.

    • Clay Russell

Perhaps, but we need the story.

  • 04Trojan

    Goddamn it.

    • JustOwns

Wait a minute, an honest bozo u response w/o the flimsy, whiny excuses.

  • Anthony_nos

In all fairness a lot of the trojan faithful were excited for this kid, and there’s no reason to run him down cause he’s going elsewhere. To my thinking he’s a lot more in the ilk of a tate Martel type talent that will bring lots of talent but plenty of drama with it. In this case it’s more an issue of goodness of fit with the culture of the program clay is building and the individual than with the abilities, and likely a failed union to both parties benefit.

    • Jack B

Not into running him down. But USC will be fine without Corral and that’s a fact. We don’t need him now. Any 2018 QB signee won’t be playing until 2020 based on our current roster.

SC recruits QB talent like it grows on trees which is why we have more QBs in the NFL than any other school. This just makes room for another big-time signal caller. That’s just the way it is.

      • Anthony_nos

Well said, agree 100 percent. Preferably a singal caller who doesn’t have a penchant for being a lightning rod as this young man has been thus far

#1 Offensive Tackle in the Nation Jackson Carman will be visiting tomorrow for 4 long days at USC and USC only. Yes surrrrrrrrr!

    • Pudly76

He told local Ohio newspaper back in May that he could see himself as an LA guy, with the weather and opportunities it brings!!!

      • Sas

Yep. Get this….His two favorite players of all time are…….Anthony Munoz and Tyron Smith.

        • Pudly76

Wasn’t he here a couple of weeks ago? I’m pretty sure he was, remember seeing his tweets getting into la.

          • Sas

No that was when he was saying he booked his flight.

    • The USC Heisman 7

Corral was told to open up his recruitment, meaning Darnold is staying and Sears is the next guy in line.. Corral would only play maybe one year..

      • Sas

He was a me first kid anyways.

        • The USC Heisman 7

He has the tools to be a great college qb.. But he also comes with baggage.. Helton dont need drama.. And you can see he did pick Ucla either.. The kid will either commit to Bama or Florida.

          • Pudly76

            I’m thinking Georgia or Florida.

          • The USC Heisman 7

He wants to play early on USC is not the place with Darnold and Sears in waiting.

          • Pudly76

No, I believe you’re right. Even Fink was an army all-American and Sears is coming on every practice according to some reports.

          • Sas

247 has Utah commit Jack Tuttle 6-4 215 going to SC now. He’s from San Marcos .Mission Hills. Alabama has already offered him.

        • The USC Heisman 7

Remember I shared that staff was looking at another kid who plays qb and is also a corner.. This has been in the works for over a month.

          • Sas

Corral also never got over that Helton was angry at him over getting physical with Gretsky’s kid.

  • Pasadena Trojan

The qb from Mater Dei is definitely on SC’s screen. He will be a junior I think this year. By that time if he goes to SC, Sears will be a junior.

    • Pudly76

Exactly right, 60+ touchdown passes last year as a sophomore.

    • LamontRaymond

And let’s be clear – USC dropped Corral. Wasn’t the kid’s choice here. He wanted to come to USC in the worst way. Maybe this’ll help the kid grow up a little, and perhaps he won’t become the next Johnny M…. Love to see that Clay isn’t putting up with crap in this program. Says a lot.

    • David Keeling

I said it a few weeks back. JT Daniels has definitely got USC’s attention. Since he is only a Junior this season and breaking records right & left, if Darnold does leave after this season, Sears will have an advantage over Corral. If Darnold does stay an extra year, Sears & Daniels would compete with Corral in 2-years. Matt evidently doesn’t like those odds. Of course, you would like to see Corral have the confidence to compete with anyone…. No QB is going to get a free ride at USC any time soon.

Something happened at Oaks Christain that was fairly serious. Corral said that it was “no big deal” but I wonder. They either kicked him out of school or they told him that it would be better if he moved on. When you have one of the best QB’s in the country and a possible future pro, you don’t ask him to leave over something that was “no big deal”. I think that SC was concerned because I heard that they were inquiring with Oaks about the incident. It bothers me a little bit that he seems to think that he is Gods gift to football. He seems to think that if he doesn’t get his way all he has to do is threaten to leave and every school will come crawling to him and begging him not to leave. All will depend on how SC does this year. If they have a great year and challenge for the national championship, they will get a great QB and I’ll bet Corral will become interested again. Now that he has de-committed and is available, I’m interested to see whether Washington offers him. So far they haven’t. But if they don’t offer him, that will tell me a lot. Also, Stanford. Petersen and Shaw are no nonsense guys who don’t care how good you are. They’re not going to offer if they think that you will be a troublemaker. Remember, Josh Rosens dream school was QB U(Stanford) and yet Stanford never even offered him.

He was let go according to multiple reports.

I’ve seen him play. I think that he’s a great QB. But there are other things that bother me about him.

          Yea, agreed.

My feeling on this “de commit” is that it was a two way street between USC and Corral. Possibly a bad bullet dodged.

Surprising…because the guy seems like a USC type.
