The Value Of A Commitment

When linebacker Kana’i Mauga committed to USC this morning, he said, “although I have verbally committed, I am continuing to leave my options open.”

This is why commitments are essentially meaningless. He will come to USC unless he changes his mind. And USC will give him a scholarship unless it changes its mind. But it’s recruiting, so it has to be important!

  1. I’m going on nearly forty years of wedded bliss, and I find myself feeling and saying the same things almost daily. Does it mean I’m not committed?

    • Ha! I get it, my friend. But it’s best to never say, “I am continuing to leave my options open” while the “the little woman” is in the same room.

  2. I rarely agree with our blogger, but it’s true- these early commitments mean next to nothing. The process has become foolish

    • We ALL —myself included—go ape sh*t with every signing —-then Scott reminds us that signings are not the end all and be all —and we ALL tell him we knew that all along. [Scott probably pulls an Ed Garrett and shakes his head]…….

      • Speaking of commitments….Will the fuuclans have to forfeit their 3rd game this Fall?

“California’s Democratic-controlled government fought tooth-and-nail with the Trump administration about a travel ban, but has no problem imposing one of its own to forbid its employees from traveling to other states that don’t share its progressive agenda.
On Thursday, California expanded its ban list to include four more states, adding Texas, Alabama, Kentucky, and South Dakota to go with Kansas, Mississippi, North Carolina, and Tennessee. ”

The f uuclans play at Memphis, TENNESSEE on Saturday September 16th at 12PM EST on a ABC nationally televised game!

        • Watch their se%ually challenged progressive leninists protest anyone traveling to Memphis esp. ‘athletes’

        • As Bobble-Head Ed would say “the roosters are coming home to the chickens”, serves them right.. at least they’ll have a built in excuse for one of their losses.

        • Gosh Goop, didn’t know you cared. I mean here you are on the bozo u blog worrying about UCLA FB team’s away TV schedule.

UCLA can alway pull a bozo u and reschedule a home game with a Div. 3 cupcake and blame the change on Memphis.

          • I capitalized TENNESSEE so even someone with fried brain cells like yourself would understand so you won’t waste hundreds of dollars of your money traveling to Memphis this September only to discover the game was cancelled.

        • Ha! Just back from a hike and see you have everyone in a lather, marv. Having left California politics behind when I arrived in Maui, I’m going to have to take your word for it that the state is actually prepared to stop it’s employees (e.g., state paid coaching staffs) from going to evil locales (e.g., Memphis). That would leave Bruin “athletes” at a disadvantage (and not just in football —–that’s a lost cause anyway—but in their “beloved” sport, also). But giving away all games scheduled in Tennessee, Texas, Alabama, Kentucky, South Dakota, Mississippi, and North Carolina is a small price to pay when it comes to demonstrating the vast moral gulf that exists between California and the lesser states.

          • Apparently Red China shares the progressive agenda of the California legislature and Governor Brown:

            “2017-18 UCLA Men’s Basketball Non-Conference Schedule
            TBD – Exhibition game
Nov. 10 – vs. Georgia Tech (Shanghai, China)”

          • Only a leader possessed of the great vision of little Jerry could appreciate the fact that the hidden connection between Los Angeles and Shanghai somehow creates an invisible wall between California and South Dakota.

        • Apparently Fresno State will be allowed to travel to Alabama much to the dismay of some of their players.

          • Will Fresno State be stripped of funding by the Democrat controlled legislature and Governor?

        • Very Funny. But, yeah, you know the SW drill. [Still, the hard truth is that —generally speaking —when we lose them, we REALLY lose them…..and when we sign them, anything can happen]……

    • Well, it means something. He’s on the radar now as a possible Trojan now.

  3. For a person who earns a living following and writing about sports, SW sure seems to hate everything about them

    • Yeah, right. Why so miserable all the time? Maybe fashion would be more up his alley.

          • It’s not you. According to all reports I’ve gotten, he’s lost substantial weight, and/or reshape his physique. Don’t know if it’s by coaches plan or his own. I always worry when you change something that works. Will he be quicker and just as strong, or will he be more susceptible to injury? We’ll see. Fight On!

          • As you say, we’ll see. Still, I can’t think of any top NFL QBs who carry extra body fat.

          • Rothlesburger, Jurgenson, Kilmer, it’s not so much as extra, just worried he might of lost some muscle mass. But he might have gained dexterity and flexibility or quickness..

    • Maybe he is tired of the North Dallas Forty style phoniness and corruption of college football and basketball.

  4. Gee I wish I had said this… oh wait I have time and again. I will not believe a kid is coming until I see him suited up. It’s like my departed mother said on her deathbed when asked if she was ready to “go into the light.”
She said, while gasping for air like fish out of water, “maybe.”

  5. I’ve committed numerous times to not reading this blog…but the quality of content and strong journalism brings me back

  6. This means……………
Helton told him to keep his options open.
    Just my personal opinion.

    • Artur Sitkowski, IMG Academy, was evaluated by Tyson Helton recently. SC in panic mode, don’t think so.

      • I wasn’t familiar with him, but I seen his 247 profile and he looks good. #68 overall. 6-5 215. Almost Carson Palmer size.

    • He’s always open and up front. We have a number of linebackers on our radar, Solomon Tuiliapupu & Merlin Robertson come to mind. But this kid looks real good, and his value will shoot up as a SC commit.

      • I agree.
And as long as we get Tuiliapupu I’m good with the LB’s in the class. Robertson is a Serr a kid so I like our chances.

  7. If he has the right to change his mind, USC should have the right to change their mind. It’s only fair.

  8. The vast majority of USC’s commits stick, if USC wants them to.

SW would place a lot more stock in commitments if he were actually breaking any of the news. But since he’s just passing along what we’ve all heard reported many hours before, he has no appreciation for why coaches want commits in the first place.

If you told USC coaches that all commitments were worthless, they openly laugh in your face. I’ll take an original commitment to USC football any day the week. Much better than having to get big-timers who have publicly commitment to other schools to change their mind.

SW doesn’t really know the thinking from USC coaches on any of these commits. To know what is really going on, he’d have to be connected to the staff, which doesn’t tell SW diddly about their efforts or plans. Those who follow recruiting know who the real insiders are.

    • Jack, who are the real insiders?

I’ll stop reading Scott’s recruiting blog entries?

As Pete commented above, this entry is NOT something we don’t know.

  9. Make your mind up Sybil. Do we fill our shorts because a 16 year old de-committed (because USC moved on) or do we ignore commitments because they mean nothing?
