Guess Who Won The Manning Academy Passing Competition?

Sam Darnold was at the Manning Passing Academy over the weekend with a long list of college star quarterbacks. So who won the Quarterback Challenge competition? Texas QB Shane Buechele.

If my memory is correct, the passing competition consists of throwing footballs at moving golf carts. When I asked Matt Barkley about it five years ago, he said, “That’s not really my thing, throwing at golf carts and stuff like that. I’d rather throw to a real receiver.” He had some trouble doing the latter too that season.

Anyways, at least Buechele winning the competition puts him on USC fans’ radar when Texas comes to the Coliseum on Sept. 16.

  1. Shane Buechele is no joke. And neither is his backup, Sam Ehlinger. They’re both dual threats who fit right into Tom Herman’s offense. And we get to face them the week after an emotional (winning) effort against Stanford. Hope the whole starting defense is intact for game #3!

    • Anyone thinking Texas will roll over is not thinking straight, will be a tough game, and Herman will have some new wrinkles just for this game. Should be fun!

          • Two problems for us with Texas (and, you’re right, Alv, we CAN overcome both of them) —-(1) they have a good starting quarterback throwing to a speedy receiver (Devin Duvernay, 4.35 in the 40), and (2) they have a terrific o-line protecting the qb. We need to forget the Stanford game the second after we WIN it, and focus on Texas.

          • Mike I understand your position re. TX’s talent in-bound. My reason is a basic of good/great teams facing off against a purported ‘revived’ squad under a new coach – good luck.

            1. Their (TX) first 2 games are against MD and San Jose St. both at Austin before they fly west.

            2. Buechele has never faced nor shall he face again this year a defensive rush he’s going to see on the 16th September.

            3. Herman only spent 2 years at HOU before he booked last December before HOU got smashed by San Diego St. in Vegas.

‘maybe’ an argument can be made that Helton isn’t too different than Herman except for one glaring difference – Helton was with USC through two disastrous coaching changes involving 3 head coaches (Kiffin, Orgeron and Sarkisian) and has a full season under his belt and

            4. Helton has Darnhold

  2. When he pays USC he won’t be throwing at golf carts and his receivers will be covered. Also, he will have Porter Gustain barreling down to destroy him. Let us see then how he is.

  3. interetsing how technology is changing the game cuz a few years ago u wouldnt have offenses with golf carts but know with self-driving cars and stuff i guess it’s easier to have them part of the offense

  4. No one is scared of Texas, give me a break. Coach P defense is now primed for QBs like the PAC12 have and any other program in the country. Every QB we face this year and years to come will be running for their very lives. Trust this!!✌

    • Agreed, Rabb (if we can manage to stay healthy throughout our bye-less schedule, we’re good).

  5. I can’t wait until student body right finds the blogger on the sidelines like on Necessary Roughness.
    What a Smart A**.

  6. Scott, how did Sam do? He didn’t win it, but did he perform well?

Were you too lazy to find out? Or would no one reveal anything?
