Sam Darnold Might Or Might Not Go Pro, So Let’s Make It A Deal

This is a slow time of year. So a bunch of fan-types are making a big deal today out of this reasonable line from an NFL.com story by Daniel Jeremiah on Sam Darnold.

“Several sources close to Darnold tell me they wouldn’t be surprised if Darnold played two more seasons at USC.”

Here is what I know: Darnold could easily go pro after this season. And given his laid-back nature and lack of concern for what others think, he could easily return to USC. It would not surprise me either if he comes back to USC. But this is not huge news. And Jeremiah did not portray it as such. Others are running with it. It’s early July after all.

    • Ha! I can top Daniel Jeremiah’s wishful prediction, jojo —“It wouldn’t surprise me if USC’s ENTIRE team came back next year —-even the graduating seniors.”

      • You know how everyone talks about east coast bias, well for a long time I’ve read different recruiting reports from across the country, SEC, BIG 10, BIG 12, ACC and they all have something in common. Not one cares to mention USC in reference to a recruits top choices. For instance, today TigerRag had an article on Jackson Carman, a top OL from Ohio, who was out here two wks ago, said he would be making his choice in the next three weeks. They went on to intimate the choice was between Clemson and OSU, WITH A SLIGHT CHANCE for Bama or FSU. Many services started to run with the same story until Carman tweeted that it wouldn’t be that soon. Then later he tweeted “I miss California”. No doubt they’ll leave that out of their updates. They’ll do anything and everything not to mention USC.

          • I get more the sense that they don’t want the other recruits to see SC building any momentum for fear of perhaps losing more. Especially early in the process when visits are being scheduled.

  1. Come back, Sam. Let’s play for not one but two National Championships, first humbling Stanford, then beating the H^ll out of the SEC.

  2. Scooter, as a journalist, you are not to get emotionally involved. Just report the facts, but in your case, the hear says.

  3. Darnold should review Leinart’s decision to return to school for a Square Dance class, a choka, choka, choka NC Championship loss and the loss of several million $$$$ due to lower draft position than the previous years draft projection (# 1 as I recall).

Today, Leinart is a staff chin on Fox Sports wishing he was still a FB player.

  4. The team around him will be better next year. If he comes up short in the playoffs and Heisman, he might be tempted to come back. But have a good year, win the Heisman and be a likely top 5 draft pick the smart play is to go for the money. It will be fun to watch this play out.

  5. This decision is 6 months away at best. So this slow news item is low hanging fruit. Sam has to do what is best for everyone and will not be a decision based on a slow news day.

  6. Oh man Scott Wolf, for the last half year you have had Sam out the door after this season and posting about who is going to replace him at QB has been non-stop on this website. Corral this & Sears that….

  7. that is my thinking too…he seems like some other SC q/b’s that all stayed for their senior years, they are enjoying themselves so why not? money isn’t everything …
