Watch List Season Commences

What is the value of a watch list? Players win awards based on how they play. But this is the week we get deluged with watch lists for the major awards just to drum up interest. So Sam Darnold is one of more than 80 players who made the Maxwell Award watch list while Porter Gustin, Iman Marshall and Cameron Smith made the Bednarik Award watch list.

  1. Ed Garrett! There is SO much material here begging for your commentary!

  2. USC is loaded. No excuse not to make the 4-team playoff. Anything can happen from there on in, but with Sam Darnold and these other Bednarik candidates, USC is primed to bring yet another NC to Heritage Hall. Should be a fantastically fun 2017 season!

    • We look like strong contenders for the NC, Jack —-but I’m really interested in how our d-line plays against Stanford’s outstanding o-line and how our o-line holds up against their very good d-line. If we look good in that game, the sky’s the limit.

      • SC can afford to lose a game early I think, MG. Hopefully both lines become better as the season moves forward and the team becomes the juggernaut they were at the of last season.

        • Yeah, I totally agree, Arturo. If we lose one of those FIVE September games, we’ll be fine —as long as we keep improving our line play. I just hope no one loses heart if that happens— cuz winning the PAC 12 Championship against a highly ranked Washington team will get us into the playoffs.

  3. the writer is so right! these watch lists dont make since and r stupid too talk about cuz everyone is on them and the seeson hasnt even started so im glad hes writing abuot them cuz they r pointless, smdh!

  4. Let’s not count our chickens quite yet. Recall that even during the Carroll dominant years the team usually lost a game it should not have.

And there will be games when it just is not your day i.e. fumbles, interceptions, bad calls, lack of energy, going up against a team that is jacked.

So, as the coaches like to cliche, I am going to “take it one game at a time,” and enjoy the ride from September to January 2018.

    • Washington St game, 2nd road game in less than a week on a Friday, Trap Game!
