USC Picture Of The Day

USC traveled to Illinois in 1962 to face the Illini at Memorial Stadium. The Trojans won, 28-16. Anyone who has visited Illinois recognizes the structure in the background. Just three weeks earlier, USC played at Iowa. And then No. 1 USC played No. 2 Wisconsin in the Rose Bowl for the national title. Above, Willie Brown gains yards against the Illini defense.

  1. Willie Brown was my first favorite Trojan player. He was the Adoree Jackson of 1962.

    • I had to learn to like him; but did…he trampled the high schools Poly played in the Moore league;I think he avgd about 15-20 yds every carry…Al Carmichael 10 yrs earlier my 1st favorite, then Aramis Dandoy, JonArnett and CR Roberts, then, well ,nevermind…lots of’em

      • Wow. You go way back Yale. Congrats!

How would you compare Al Carmichael or Aramis Dandoy to Willie? Where they as spectacular, or more so in your mind?

I haven’t really seen any tape of those guys. I remember thinking that Willie seemed like he could do anything.

Of course, there was always Hal Bedsole, who seemed like he could catch anything and an example of McKay’s always excellent use of JC transfers.

        • SC used to always get JC all americans, Frank Gifford was the first one I saw in ’51,and their all American Tay Brown was head coach at Compton college who used to go to JR. Rose Bowls often and send players to SC…I only watched Willie play in high school not the others…I never saw anyone else run like him,it seemed he would take to the end zone almost every carry; that also was a great all around team at q/b ,fullback…those guys played both sides; my first Rose Bowl was ’53 Al Carmichael caught the only score a pass from Rudy Bukich;Wisconsin had Alan ‘The horse’ Amache, it was an upset win… the ’52 team will always be my favorite,I still have all the programs, nobody has tapes or dvd’s that I know of…all those guys played both sides;only about 45-50 on a team.

  2. I was in that stadium in the 80’s when SC won back there, the heat index was 130

    • I was there too, the 1985 game. My car overheated on the way to Chicago for a Tampa Bay-Bear game the next day (may have been the NFL Season Opener) and I got stuck in the beautiful South Chicago suburb of Calumet City for over 3 days.

    • Well, Cortez…..was that Down by the River, next to the Cowgirl in the Sand?

  3. i dont meen to show up the writer but the “structure” in the background is called a building, they r every where and not just on the east coast, smdh!

    • That’s it, I left my wife a letter explaining that if I harm myself it’s your fault… I included screen shots of your comments as proof.

      • Maybe the funniest post in the history of INSIDE USC. I’m still laughin’.

  4. The ILLINOIS campus was absolutely enormous (4,552 acres). I think I remember it being very flat and spread out. Just giant.

I remember OHIO ST’s seemed big too and it’s only 1,777 acres.

USC’s is 226 acres, which doesn’t include the new USC University Village (700 mil or so), which is densely packed on only15 acres.

ucla’s campus is 419 acres to give you some perspective on the incredible size of the ILL campus.

  5. Poor Illinois was on a 14 game losing streak when SC beat them for #15. Hopefully the ruins will be on a 12 game losing streak when we play them this year.

  6. Scooter, you did not mention where Willie Brown is looking. If you notice, he is looking to his left downfield to see who he was going to run by. An ugly running back would have looked at the guy in front of him falling down. That is the difference between USC and ugly. SC knows they have the guy beat on the ground while ugly is hoping the guy on the ground doesn’t tackle him. USC dominence
