  1. Considering how strong Washington is supposed to be, particularly on offense, the odds on USC taking the PAC12 are surprisingly high.
    Considering how sad Cal is supposed to be on both offense and defense, the odds on them taking the PAC 12 are also surprisingly high.

    • Something tells me that I don’t think Washington will be that strong against USC, if they meet up in the Pac 12 tournament game. I believe USC will be better. But it is a new season, so Washington may have improved.

      • My gut tells me you’re right —-but I tend to give some respect to Phil Steele’s analysis and he has our offense rated pretty even with Washington’s. But, all in all, I’m with you —-I think we’ll beat Washington in the PAC 12 Championship (partly because I think Jake Browning’s throwing arm will, just like last year, be shot by December).

        • The Huskies seem to have players on all of these watch lists so they will have talent to go along with their excellent coaching.

          • Yep. USC and Washington. Two fully stocked offenses, two solid defenses. We have to pray that Sam counterbalances their definite edge in the coaching department. Petersen has been planning how to stop Sam since last November 12th (USC 26, Washington 13).

          • Winning the PAC 12 from Petersen would push Helton into the top ranks of college coaching—with all the recruiting benefits that implies.

          • The Penn St coaches had a full month, played against some good B10 teams and nothing they could throw at Sam flustered him, and they threw the kitchen sink at him with their blitzes. Petersen gets his second lesson form Helton and Sam.

          • Very, very good point —-and Franklin is every bit as good a coach as Petersen.

  3. UW isn’t good enough to overcome Darnold. Neither are ucla nor ND. These teams already know this – which is why ucla players are begging for a Darnold injury.

    USC has the player in the lead for the Heisman! That’s huge. And Sam’s got the perfect temperament to handle it. He’s the perfect fit for USC and will go down in history as the greatest QB to ever play for the Trojans.

    That’s one reason why USC will win the Pac-12. The other reason is that USC is loaded with other supporting talent and the team is working very hard this off-season.

    USC has returned to power baby and this season will be when the rest of the nation figures this out.

    • Only one question, Jack: Will Helton get outcoached by Petersen on December 2nd?

      • I’m a big Petersen fan and I wanted USC to take him bad. Real bad.

        But based on how USC took it to UW last season in Seattle, I think Helton is up to the task based on how USC finished last season.

        Great QBs are very tough to defend. Right now, USC has the great QB and there’s not a darn thing Petersen can do about that.

    • Pump the brakes. I think people need to realize that Darnold has played 10 games. Need to see a few more games before giving the keys to the city. This defense though has the potential to be really good.

      • I’ve been pumping the brakes ever since word got out that USC was being investigated by the NCAA because of Reggie Bush and his parents.

        Now that USC is nearly at full strength again and based on what I’ve seen Darnold do, I’m all in. I don’t need to see any more to believe he’s got what it takes in my mind. He’s the best I’ve QB ever seen at USC, but that’s just my opinion.

        • Yea, I get it. This team is going to be fun to watch. I think Darnold could be as good as you say I would just like to see a greater body of work. Also not sold on Helton as a game strategist.

          • I like what I’m hearing in the off-season and I like Helton’s staff adjustments.

            None of us will really know about him until after Sam is gone. But great players have always made great coaches. Without O.J., McKay would have probably lost to Tommy Prothro three straight years and missed out on two Rose Bowls.

            We’ve got the hot hand, so I’m ridin’ it. Things have been tough since Carroll left, for many reasons. Now, we’re back IMHO. Gotta relish it when it’s good. The great times never last. I think this will be a great season for USC. We can literally win it all and everybody knows it.

      • Sam actually HAS proved himself. In 10 games he showed something we didn’t have with “The Max Twins” (Wittek and Browne) or Kessler —-the ability to bring the team back when the game is on the line.
        There is no way Sam lost his killer instinct over the summer.

        • Read a couple places EJ is done for the year, will sit out. Not official yet, but..

        • Knowing how to win is a talent, some front runners can’t come from behind, just not in their makeup, some can’t win the close ones, the stress gets to them, so far Sam’s passed all those tests.

      • Uhh just 10 games??? These guys don’t play that many games in their college careers these days. You don’t need 20-30 games to see this guy has skills and abilities not seen for quite a while. It really can’t be overstated the effect Darnold AND Helton have made on this program. Helton may not be championship level (YET) but he truly is a stand up Adult compared to the two previous unnamed coaches. His job this past season was great and showed USC is in the playoff conversation under his guidance.

    • Washington doesn’t have the depth be able to compete in the NCAA playoffs.
