Ronald Jones’ Hands Are Improved

USC assistant coach Deland McCullough says Ronald Jones “was a guy that didn’t catch very well,” when McCullough arrived in the spring. But McCullough says it won’t be an issue this season.

“Now he’s confident and has soft hands,” McCullough said. “It doesn’t look like it’s a struggle for him.”

McCullough said Jones’ other perceived weakness, pass blocking, is not an issue.

  1. It was obvious his pass blocking was an issue last season, he acted like a maitre de showing people to the big morsel. Only thing he missed was a towel over his arm. That was part of the problem they had last year, everyone knew when Jones was out it was pass.

    • Jones is an ambitious young man. He’s quick, he’s fast, he has powerful legs.. Certainly he knows that he won’t play much in the pass-first NFL without both blocking AND catching.

Jones knows that ALL the other RBs catch well.

My guess is that Jones is likely working hard at both skills, and McCullough wants to deflect discouraging inquiries. If Jones were to stop working hard on them, McCullough might respond differently.

I recall one play (v. Cal ?), in which Jones caught a screen pass, and was in the end zone before anyone knew what had happened.

I suspect he could be quite dangerous on short crossing routes, such as the one Juju ran, when he was not targeted on the final RB touchdown. Had that been Jones, Sam’s decision might have been different, bc Jones is much faster and shiftier.

      • I am hoping he has worked hard to learn and polish his skills. What I saw last season was miserable from him. He had nowhere to go but up.

      • That’s what I’m saying Steve.
Dan Hubs better see the new pep in the step of Andy Enfield and Clay Helton and he’d better follow.

      • There’s pressure for sure. It’s definitely growing as they keep winning. I was listening 570 a while ago and they were comparing this team to the murderers row team, to the red machine team, and others as one of the greats. That’s pretty damn good company. If the Dodgers don’t get it done it’s a huge failure to me. It would put us in Buffalo Bills/Atlanta Braves land. That being said I think we’re finally ready for the moment and we’re playing championship baseball.

  2. Clearly you don’t see eye to eye with Coach McCullough, Flow. So clearly you must be right.

  3. seams like some thing dont make since, if he can catch the ball good know than why is john darnhold throwing so many interpretations to him, smdh!
