USC’s No. 1 Fan Shows Up

USC Superfan Colin Cowherd was at practice today . . . wearing a USC visor. He had a one-on-one conversation with Clay Helton after practice. Let’s recall what he said about Helton last September.

Clay Helton’s just not ready . . . It’s a bad staff. You gotta clean house. You don’t have to fire him now but it’s just not working . . . You gotta make a move because there’s other jobs coming open like LSU and they’ll take the best candidate.”

    • He doesn’t have the cahoonas to go up to Colin and ask him about what he said a year ago? Big P&ssy.

    • One huge difference is Cowherd admits to being a fan of the program before he even reports on anything. Wolf should admitted he hates the program before he reports anything. The other difference is Cowherd is successful, wealthy, married, and well liked by many.

      • Scott Wolf is one of your most important alumni.
He is the conscience of USC.
While your A.D. and his family were milking a charity, while Sark (Cowherd’s buddy) was at happy hour, while Petey was cheating, and while your Dean of Medicine was prescribing meth to himself, Scott was there, reporting the good AND the bad. He is here to remind you that winning the wrong way ain’t winning.
Without Scott, your heads would all expand until they exploded.
Keep up the good work Wolfman!
Don’t listen to the doubters, they will one day recognize your true worth.

  1. Well who can blame him? I mean they were stuck with an ineffective quarterback and poor play calling. I would have agreed with him at the time.
I didn’t want Helton fired but I wanted changes. And I was not alone. I changed my tune, but watching games again I can see the team is different under the leadership of Sam Darnold. Players rally to him. Helton got lucky.

  2. I suppose Scott Wolf doesn’t remember himself crucifying Helton after a 1-3 record staying with Max Browne? But saying that, most of us were saying the same thing. So, Scott, why are you singling out Cowherd? (You got the answer Ken Hart)

    • damn… watching JT Daniels on Utube in scrimmage throws as a junior. Wow, what is he going to be like as a college freshman.

      • Utube from this fall? He was a sophomore this past year. I’ll check it out. I watched him several times the last couple of years, he’s got great anticipation and puts the ball away from coverage pretty well.

    • Because alumni have the right to be critical of a team without being called fair weather fans?

  3. To be fair, a LOT of us were saying similar things this time last year. Just sayin’

    • Not a lot; more like 95% wanted Helton tarred and feathered after 1-3. Remember how many were insulting the guy with the moniker “Gomer?”

Most people are decent, but as sports fans most people are rude and crude when their team loses. Grow up!

  4. I definitely think that Cowherd jumped to conclusions at too early a time in this coaches experience. But, having said that, I still think that CH is a question mark despite the fact that I like what he has done so far.

    • I agree and I’d say many of us are waiting to see just how skilled Helton is when a real test comes, and it shall sometime this year, as to knowing the right move to make.

      • I like CH. I like most of what he’s done so far. His recruiting baffles me a little bit. We don’t need anymore receivers and I, personally, wouldn’t be giving scholarships to kickers and punters and longsnappers but that’s just me. But, overall, I like what he is doing. But I don’t think that we’ll know how good a coach he is until Sam leaves. Remember, he was only 1-2 last year while Sam was sitting on the bench and they played terrible in 2 of those games and Utah State was 3-9 last year. Before last season, his record was something like 6-4 and his resume before he became a head coach was good but anything but stellar. Try and imagine what their record would have been last year if Sam wasn’t there and they had to go the whole season with Max as QB. It wouldn’t have been 10-3. Probably more like 8-5 or maybe 7-6. He is a good recruiter, the players love him and I do think that he is a fast learner. I would never have hired him. I would have gone with a more proven winner, but that’s just me. Sometimes hiring an assistant works out great. Guys like John McKay, John Robinson, David Shaw, Chip Kelly, Bob Stoopes, Gary Patterson, Dabo Sweeney, Jimbo Fisher, Mike Gundy and many more were all assistants when they were hired. We’ll just have to wait and see.

        • He was just on KLAC 570 am w. Rodney Peete – just got the very very last end of the talk. I think he is a very decent man but not completely sold on his skill set.

  5. Cowherd is trying really hard to be a Manhattan Beach guy. Quite a reach for a guy his age to dress like a 17 year old beach kid.

  6. @jim stated the big point – I think that Clay Helton is a fast learner. Early last season he was bad – the ‘Bama game, esp. in the second half, the conservative UT State game, the lackluster Stanford game where it looked like the players were mostly passionless. The Utah loss with the punt at the end of the game was bad too. He was still finding his way the next win, (against AZ St) where he went for it in the first quarter on USC’s side of field after a third and short run failed, then tried another similar run on fourth down.

However, Helton and staff really hit their stride by the Washington game. I thought that was the best coached game of the season. USC went up there and dominated a final four team on their home field. The game should have been even more one-sided than the 26-13 score indicated. If the coaching staff can do that for all the big games this season (or better, all the games), USC will have a good year.

  7. Cowherd is better at his job than Scott Wolf is at HIS.
    So was Lane Kiffin.

  8. There’s a reason why you don’t walk around barefoot in a Cattle Farm, because you’ll end up with “Cow-Terds” on your feet !

And that stuff really “STINKS” !!
