USC Morning Buzz: If It’s Friday, It’s Time For The Notes Column

In my Friday notes column, I lead off with how freshman Tyler Vaughns (21) has taken every first-team snap through 10 practices . . . and still is not called a starter yet. Meanwhile, fellow receiver Velus Jones has had a quiet/disappointing training camp after making some big plays last spring.

Sam Darnold also talks about his Sports Illustrated cover and mention what he and Josh Rosen have in common when it comes to SI’s player rankings. Full column here

  1. me and the writer have same problems with r compooters when we say things hear, i ocasionaly mispell words to,

      • As George Foreman said, “when you’re getting your ideas across, spelling doesn’t matter.” (I’m not sure why I’m bringing that quote up in relation to Ed, though).
        #WeLoveYouAnyway,Ed

    • Ed, Maybe if you stopped shaking your damn head while you’re typing the misspells will go away.

  2. Is the same Venus that had three long td passes this week? And when he dropped a fourth was called out by Cam Smith, who called him “ass-hands”.

    • It would be tough to look better than Velus did on that touchdown off the reverse in spring. I have a feeling that we’re gonna need his speed against Stanford —-sure hope the coaching staff hasn’t given up on him.

      • He will play. He really stretches the field from the middle. Also the rs freshman Angeline is making plays at 6’7″.. should be in rotation, especially in red zone.

        • Couldn’t agree more with your comments. Stanford will have to put a different defense on the field than last year —-when they weren’t worried about us completing anything past 20 yards.

          • Stnfurd really got into Junu’s head the last few times we played them. They will have to cover the running backs also, look out cause I’m feeling like we got them this year..

          • It would be so nice to pour it on Stanford this year —-good for PAC 12 race but good for morale too!
            P.S.
For Juju’s sake I hope he doesn’t play like a prima donna in the NFL —-there will be times the coverage gets a little tiny bit physical. He needs to play every game with the toughness he showed in the Rose Bowl.

          • I think he learned. Steelers will bring out his best again, and working with Hines Ward keeps him level headed.

          • Now that Harbaugh’s players are gone Stanford will slink back into its familiar role as punching bag and Homecoming patsy.

    • Velus Jones will play. You can’t keep a receiver with great speed on the bench, especially if the other receivers can’t shake the coverage.

      • Tyler has also had multiple td passes this week, and Velus seems to run out of the slot a lot, somehow our coverage has Cam covering him..curious to me.

  3. Anybody interested in the new nike SC SHOES, they will be available starting the 14th of august. Both in cardinal or white!!

  4. How can you call anybody a starter before you have a game to start? Talk about digging for controversy.

  5. Also, for those interested, there is video already of our linebacker recruit out of Hawaii. Only one game, but he looks like a keeper!

    • Thanks I’m a have to check it later!
But is Joseph Lewis still pushing for a spot? What about Pittman?

      • Lewis is #2 behind Deontae, Pittman is behind Greene right now..am curious to see how this washes out. Green is a hell of an athlete too. By the end of the year these receivers will have the whole country jealous..

        • I love how Green made the move and didn’t cry or check out. He’s football player who gets it. It on the field and it as a great teammate. But I think Pittman will bring too much toughness with his play resemble early Juju and eventually get the spot at starter. Hopefully he breaks out and eats up Stanford.

          • Such a good point Sam, he not only is a great teammate, he’s a great Trojan and smart. He knew if he couldn’t win the job in college he certainly wouldn’t in the pros.
I am expecting the same thing from Pittman, he always shine brightest when the game counted most. Check out his numbers from his last playoff game, unbelievable. Going against two of his current teammates.

  6. Great chance to watch some commits on week 1, when Bishop Gorman and Mater Dei face-off. Multiple commits and targets!! Should be on prime ticket at 7:30

  7. “It seems like every number at USC is worn by an offensive or defensive player.” Very DEEP thinking sw!!! Take that Alan Malamud!

  8. Scotty, did i miss Darnold’s comment about what he and Rosen have in common when it comes to SI Players Rankings??

    #MaybeI’mSlippin’

    • No, it wasn’t a Darnold comment, it was a Wolf comment – Rosen was #11 last year on the SI top 100, and Sam is #11 this year.
