Saturday Scrimmage Recap

USC held a 70-play scrimmage today and it’s one the offense will likely forget immediately. The kickers were 3 for 9 on field goals. Clay Helton said he might need to be more aggressive on fourth down situations and kick less, like on fourth-and-4 plays.

Sam Darnold’s streak without an interception came to an end as Ajene Harris made a nice one-handed grab near the end zone. The first-team offense did little against the first-team defense. The first-team offensive line has had trouble running the ball in particular.

Tailback Stephen Carr had a 45-yard run but it was against the third-team defense. Helton liked defensive ends Porter Gustin and Uchenna Nwosu on defense and said cornerback Iman Marshall had his best of practice.

How weird is it going to be if we lose the National Championship on a blown field goal? When we had a proven kicker coming out of the Rose Bowl?
For a lot of reasons—-including many that have nothing to do with football (e.g., protecting one’s good name) —-it’s too bad Matt Boermeester wasn’t given a chance to defend himself via cross examination of the complaining witness.

    • Sas

Mike, I don’t want to do it. But I could throw the best in my hand, tv controller, or phone at my tv.
I DO NOT WANT TO DO THAT.

      • Michael Guarino

Same here, Sam —–but it might be hard not to. A politically correct student court screwed over a player’s life and, in the process, messed with the team’s chances at the brass ring.

        • Pudly76

Easy boys, only a scrimmage. We have plenty of time..

          • Michael Guarino

I’m glad you yelled out “guys! guys!” You’re right, Pudly. It’s not the end of the world. [I just hate the fact that this team had all the moving parts necessary to be great—-and things have gone a LITTLE bit south because of a process that is somewhat suspect].

          • Bruin 34

Only a scrimmage??? What’s gonna change? Not a damn thing! But Darnold is winning the Heisman so it’s all good! šŸ˜‰

          • Pasadena Trojan

Lmao, unlike ugly which is at the top of their game now for the year, SC is only going to get better.

        • Sas

Great point Mike. That still pi**es me off how they can vote a kid out so quick, but when they have sworn testimony to the truth they turn away because the head men in charge do not want to apologize or look bad.

          • Michael Guarino

Right you are, Sam! USC needs to take a long, hard look at a policy which ignores the basic elements of due process —the right to be represented at a hearing by an attorney and the right to cross examine the witnesses against you (and the right of your own witnesses to be heard and respected).

          • Sas

They are hurting his name by this.

          • Pasadena Trojan

Hope he sues the Policy of Title IX and Usc. Sc just went through that with the NCAA. U think they would have learned to the party a chance to explain. Next time they will if the kid wins

          • Sas

Yeah I agree. They’re just asking for more press and media coverage later on that’s. only going to keep explaining how USC continued to shut the door even when the young female came forward with the truth. You said it. If he wins they’ll learn and be more careful on handling these situations because he’s lawyered up in DC.

      • Pudly76

Tyler Vaughns had 3 TDs today..played on second team as they switched he and Stevie Mitchell

        • Michael Guarino

Tyler is unreal. Plenty of talent at receiver —although Dan Weber sez Stephen Mitchell has slowed down a step. Our concern, after today’s scrimmage, has to be the o-line. It is beginning to look like they can’t spring Jones —and that puts too much pressure on Sam.

          • Pudly76

Timing is a big deal with the oline. The defense knows the plays and formations as well as the offense and thus requires the offense to be even quicker and more dominant. Couple that with all the switching and cross training going on and I’d say it’s too early to worry.
Now don’t make me take away your belts, ties and shoelaces…

          • Michael Guarino

Ha! Don’t worry, my friend. They’re not gonna find me hanging in my cell.

          • Pasadena Trojan

Wait until Stanford to worry. The first game the boys are working out the kinks. The second game is a vast improvement

          • Pudly76

Agree with that, and I’ll go even further. I don’t think our offense peaks until maybe the fifth or sixth week, then look out.

            Wimpwood sucks sand..

        • Sas

          NOICE!!!!!!

That’s great to hear. We’ve been waiting for breakout like that from a new guy. We just need Pittman to get going.
I have some potential bad news on my side. Scratch that, bad news but actually great news for the opportunities it will create later. But my son’s travel team is booked with tournaments and Doubleheaders for a while, and I may have give my tickets to my brother and his two boys. I’m hoping to at least get to the Texas game and/or Ucla games. It’s a bummer, but at the same time a joy to be there and help. The coaches want me to help with the middle infielders and it’s been pretty tiring going straight from work but I have the coaching itch also. Yeah, so that’s that. HOWEVER…….We will be stopping at places for Beer, food, and HD Big screens to watch the SC games when we need to. The head coach is a relative (Notre Dame fan) and we made that part of the deal. Plus he coached me in 13-14 yr olds and we’re the only team in our towns his to ever win a Pony League All-Star Flag when we switched to Pony League, that and he’s coached HS+Travel ball+and has put kids through college with his through the years. Long story short it’s all about the kid. I WILL BE CHECKING MY PHONE AT ALL CHANCES and running home to catch whatever I can get because I’m not missing any parts of the The Trojans season!

          • JustOwns

            Family comes first.

          • Sas

Very true Owns. I’m with you on that. Also, are we gonna finally win it in October. This is getting to be unreal. As they keep winning the WS or Bust talk is getting larger. I think we have what it takes.

          • Pasadena Trojan

Too bad u don’t have one Squatter.

          • Pudly76

As I found out with my daughters, time flies by in the blink of an eye and they’ll be gone before you know it. ENJOJ YOUR KIDS..you don’t get a second chance. Squeeze every second out you can and realize how precious it is. Football seasons come and go, they’ll always be another. Happy for you.

            Hear anything about Pittman?

          • Sas

Definitely. That’s what it’s about. The little time we have and as you said squeezing every second when the chance is there. I appreciate your words, thanks!
But no I haven’t looked too close at anything football besides commenting here quickly since early friday. We had a doubleheader yesterday and we prepped the field, dragged it, etc. I was a construction/groundskeeperr after delivering packages JK, but I haven’t looked at my phone much the last few days.

            WR Deontay Burnett, Josh Imatorbhebhe
            WR Steven Mitchell, Tyler Vaughns
            WR Jalen Green, Velus Jones

That’s the lineup from the scrimmage.
            -No word on Pittman.
-Carr had a 60 yard run. He keeps making noise.
-Ykili Ross has worked his way into the mix of things so far through camp. He’s competing with Ajene Harris now. He impressed me when he was at Riverside Poly. My younger cousin started at Guard so we checked a game out and Ross can move but he has really good ball instincts in the secondary. I hope he does well. I know the word was he wasn’t able to grasp the concept of defensive packages and read coverages too well early on, but he looks like he could see some PT.

    • Pudly76

Or testifying in his own defense.

    • marvgoux1

Thank you Obama Administration’s Dear Colleague Letter, the gift that keeps on giving even after they leave. It will take years to undo the damage he did to America.

      • Michael Guarino

You can’t —in this world —-have a president who wants to be Gandhi. Or pretends to want to be Gandhi.

  • Bruin 34

Well………….Well……..Well……..didn’t see that coming with the O line.

  • Uncle Rico

This defense is going to be monster good.

    • Pudly76

Defense wins championships. And this one seems to be where it should, ahead of the offense. I’ll not worry till stnfurd, and by then I suspect all will be as it should with the offense. The kicking game, well I just gotta trust Baxter, he’s earned that much, at least with me.

    • Bruin 34

Besides Green and Gustin on d line. How? Secondary? How? Baffling statement!!!!

      • Jack B

With the little gutties crap offense, how could USC be worried? Oh ya, I suppose your offense will be magically changed because DeBong Foster is your RB coach and you have some MIA reject now on your o-line. SC practices against Darnold every day. Playing against Rosen will be just like two years ago, a piece of cake.

Is baby ucla ranked in the top 25? Of course not. Can’t wait for The Chimp to blow another gasket and try to facecup someone when A&M rolls into the Rose Bowl and punks you again.

      • Pasadena Trojan

Cameron Smith, Houston, the d line and a very good secondary. Now ruin boy, what does ugly have besides a coach who supports pedophile?

  • David Keeling

The defense knows the offensive plays as well as the offense. They have been observing those plays the last 2-weeks. Did you expect anything different?

    • Michael Guarino

Actually, I did, David. But thanks for the reminder. I feel a little better now.

      • Pudly76

You saw Juju had a concussion during his game? Assisting on a tackle.

        • Michael Guarino

Didn’t see that, Pudly. But thanks for telling me. It makes want to take back everything I said about him being a prima donna……..

          • Pudly76

There was talk of him starting by the opener, this throws the schedule back some.

          • Michael Guarino

Sorry to hear this. Juju seemed invulnerable his first season at USC —but it’s been one thing or another since. Hope he gets a chance to strut his stuff soon —when he’s 100% he’s pretty awesome.
