USC Morning Buzz: If It’s Friday, It’s Time For A Notes Column

The dog days of training camp have officially arrived at USC as the Trojans head toward Scrimmage No. 3 on Saturday. Also in the notes column, I speak to one of the greatest players in USC history, who is skipping tonight’s Salute to Troy. It’s all in the Friday notes column.

How does it feel to know that Thuc Nhi Nguyen is a much better beat reporter? She doesn’t have to resort to petty negative spin and keeps her fans informed on the latest developments and progress of the team. Check it out, maybe you can learn something from her column.

Why do you come to this blog if you despise Wolf so much ?

      • Jack B

Many of us come to this Trojan blog to contribute info and read enlightening USC fan comments.

Often, that’s the only worthwhile info here, unless SW’s tireless devotion to Hecuba floats your boat.

        • CORTEZ THE KILLER

Does gotroy22 still call you “Jackie the Trans “?

        • Trojan5

Happy Friday Jack. I have read at least 25 articles about the USC Village. All lauded the schools efforts and results they achieved. From the hiring of local workers, to sustainable building materials, to community outreach and on and on USC was praised for its good works.. To read the snark/petty criticism of Hecuba is flat out embarrassing. Thank God for the readers who bring wit, knowledge, information & humor to this site everyday.

          • Jack B

USC Village is a smashing success, from drawing board concept to reality.

Such great execution from top to bottom. What an amazing inner city upscale project.

          • j metaphor

One question; Is the statue bullet proof?

          • Michael Guarino

If it’s not, someone wasn’t thinking ahead.

          • j metaphor

You’ve read over 25 articles about the SoCal village?
You don’t get out much, do you T5?

          • Trojan5

            CLOWN!!!

          • Jethro G Sabbath

At least he doesn’t live on his rival’s blog.

          • UtahTrojan

Safer to be on this blog than the bRuin campus.

      • Ken Hart

The people who like Wolf are mostly bRuin trolls the rest of us come to set the record straight and poke fun at the blogger.

        • Grammymb

Makes you feel like a man.

      • Michael Guarino

Why? To sing Thuc’s praises…..and to decry negativity and pettiness….over and over again.

    • j metaphor

The Wolfman gets more hits posting one picture of Trader Joe’s wall than Overtime Nguyen gets in a week.
      He is a media genius.
If SC ever has an accredited journalism department they will one day study Scott’s work the way a real school studies Shakespeare.

      • Michael Guarino

Just cuz most people have never heard of Thuc doesn’t means she’s a bad person…… she just suffered the bad fate of living during the era of Scott.

      • marvgoux1

Why do you call her Overtime Nguygen?

    • hoohoolianFUCLA

Really! It’s so unprofessional to negatively spin these days as being dogs.

  • CORTEZ THE KILLER

Didn’t invite Ron Yary ? That’s pathetic. He probably doesn’t donate enough money.

    • gotroy22

Funny how the rah rahs always take the side of paid employee mercenaries over USC students and alumni.

      • Michael Guarino

But what can Ron do for them now? It’s not like he’s the former Dean of the School of Medicine or a former Athletic Director.

        • gotroy22

          Ouch!

  • Uncle Rico

Summary of the morning sunshine. Dog days camp, kicking team sucks, OJ in jail, Ron Yary screwed, Hecuba looks like statue, Mayor (UCLA grad) spoke at ceremony (daughter went to USC), lost out on Bagley.
    #skyisfalling

    • Jack B

All these other football attendees don’t seem to have a problem with how they were invited. If Ron Yary doesn’t want to come, big deal. Who cares?

      • Michael Guarino

Agreed, Jack. Not a big deal in the scheme of things —-but who would have been hurt by giving Ron a BIT of a heads up as to which of his teammates were most likely to attend? You can get that info in advance at even the most rinky dink class reunions.
It sounds like Ron is not so much peeved at the lack of a formal invite but with getting one of those “sorry, we can’t give out that kind of information” responses when he called to get some idea of who’d be there and who wouldn’t.

        • Jack B

The problem is, SW left out much more than he reported, which is the way he writes most all the time. We don’t know the half of what went on here. But as I said, who cares?

If Yary needs a gold-plated invite sealed with a kiss, that’s too bad. Who knows who Yary spoke with and what their authority was? And why would he need to speak with anyone when word always gets around about who will be going anyway? Gee, I guess I’ll skip my class reunion because the organizer won’t send me a complete guest list. Silly.

The bottom line is, attendance isn’t a problem with anyone except Yary. But I couldn’t care less if he shows or not, even though SW makes a big deal of it while also frequently saying these affairs are worthless, over-hyped and boring. So, which is it? Important to go to or no big deal if blown off?

I’d say Yary should get over himself. But since we don’t know so much based on what SW really reported and omitted, maybe Yary really just doesn’t want to miss his favorite TV show, in which case, more power to him.

          • Michael Guarino

Yeah you’re right —-this probably all comes down to some low level junior assistant who wasn’t diplomatic on the phone…..but it would have been NICER if SOMEONE had given a true Trojan hero the time of day.

          • Jack B

Ya….sometimes it’s tough dealing with those big shots, you know, the ones who like to throw their weight around. Do you know who you’re talking to?

I’d say it would be nice if Yary just showed, had a good time with old buddies and kept his mouth shut instead of whining to SW about his bad phone calls.

          • j metaphor

You mean keeping his mouth shut like you do?

          • Jack B

I’m always happy to aggravate you wimp boy. Making you Trolls look stupid is one of the main reasons to be here. Duh, again.

          • j metaphor

You’re good at stupid, that’s for sure.

          • Jack B

Is that all you got wimp? Compared to you, everyone else around here is a genius. Did you inherit that from your mommy, daddy, or were both idiots like you?

Don’t you ever get tired of bending over punk?

          • gotroy22

A mercenary paid employee with no loyalty to USC besides a paycheck snubs a USC legend. Guess who the rah rahs defend?

          • Michael Guarino

It seems like it woulda been pretty easy for the answerless whoever who answered the phone to yell out across the room “anybody know who’s coming? I got Ron Yary on the phone.” Then again, maybe that’s too much to ask.

          • Jack B

It seems like it would be pretty easy for Nikias to return a simple important phone call to the L.A. Times, but he couldn’t pull it off.

Lots of things seem pretty easy when they aren’t.

Seems like it should be pretty easy to fire Nikias after this Keck Med fiasco, but it’s obviously not. Another LAT article today makes Nikias again look like the fool he is.

          • Michael Guarino

Tell me more about the Times article when you get a chance, Jack. Always fun to pinpoint the exact moment folks see the Emperor has no clothes.
Time to go have brunch now. Pancakes with lots of maple syrup, plenty of sausage and eggs. Gotta make my doctor proud!

          • gotroy22

            Snorkle later?

          • Michael Guarino

I just got back and got a big laugh outta your suggestion, gt —-I’m pretty sure I would die if I tried it right now. Maybe tomorrow.

          • Jack B

Makes the Pasadena PD look real lazy, inept, gullible and bad in general. USC didn’t fire the pervert doctor (and eventually literally bar him from campus) until the Times ratted out the story just last July. USC and Nikias had been hiding from the press and sitting on this mess for a long time.

          • Michael Guarino

gotroy22 makes a great point—-very few people have memories that stretch back more than 24 hours anymore. Max is secure in the knowledge that no one will remember ANY of this by the holidays—-UNLESS a multiplicity of lawsuits keep it in the news (and, not even then, if they’re all settled outta public view)…….

          • Jack B

Disagree on this one. As they say nowadays, this one left a mark. Nikias has really been taken down a peg. I really thought he was a lot smarter than this and some Dec cheer isn’t going to make this go away.

Some real important USC people aren’t happy with Nikias at all about this. These people have long memories. Nikias is still secure and going nowhere, of course. He’s also getting a good bounce because of the fantastic University Village project.

But nobody’s forgetting the drug addict/perv Keck Medical scandal for a very long time. After awhile, we’ll all hear about the special USC commission report on this monumental example of ineptitude at the highest level. Should be worth a few more laughs at least.

          • Michael Guarino

Man, do I ever hope you’re right. For my part, I’ve seen too many of the most critical accusatory lines in commission reports removed before they ever get published. They are usually triumphs of mishmash.

          • gotroy22

The hired help didn’t know who Ron is. They think the world began when they were born.

    • The USC Heisman 7

      Lol

    • JustOwns

Almost as bad as your Hollywood Blvd. act/show.

  • 04Trojan

    FTFO.

  • Jack B

Why would Hecuba be designed to make us forget Tommy Trojan?

The Tirebiter statue doesn’t make me forget TT either. No complaints.

  • Ed Garrett

they shuold tare down this statute of incubus cuz of slavery,

    • Michael Guarino

      Oh. don’t worry, Ed.
      #It’sOnlyAMatterOfTime….

      • gotroy22

The New York Times and Washington Post will need to cease publication since they are both named after slave owners. Owns hardest hit!

        • Michael Guarino

I say it’s about time, gt! I can’t think of one single thing Washington did for this country!
Talk about a man who didn’t know the meaning of the words “sacrifice” or “patriotism!”

        • JustOwns

Don’t regularly read the NYT or WP to care one way or another.

But remind us 22, what slave owners to do you refer to?

          • gotroy22

The Duke of York and George Washington.

          • gotroy22
  • The USC Heisman 7

Many women in and around USC are happy with the addition of “The Hecuba”.. for me, “What difference does it make” .. Oh wait,I have heard that phrase before.. My point is, Whats the big deal.. Its there, and not going anywhere..

In the end, this is a sports blog, report on USC sports, no reason for GOT or former recruits or staff, we see that on other venues..

Whats currently going on at fall camp is what we should be focusing on as the season nears..

For the most part you do a good job SW.. But this a USC sports blog..✌

    Fight On!

    • Michael Guarino

This response is so sane, fair minded and on the money that I hope it gets roundly attacked by all sides, Heisman 7.
      P.S.
Thanks for reminding me of the quote that best summarizes the twenty-first century.

    • hoohoolianFUCLA

Haven’t you read the original PC guidelines? (Degrees available at bRuinTech)
People can’t achieve without a role model that looks and acts like them. Just ask Debbie Thomas. She never would have won the Bronze at the 88 Olympics and became a doctor if it weren’t for all the other Olympic FS Bronze medal-winning black figure skaters who became doctors before her.

      • Michael Guarino

I just hope there aren’t too many coeds reading your piece and saying “YES, EXACTLY!”

  • Old Trojans never die

Well hurrumph!!! I’m not going to the event either. I’m going to the Hollywood Bowl to see the USC Spirit of Troy Marching band play.

  • j metaphor

    Salute to Troy?
Is this the Toast to Troy where Sark got toasted?
Does anyone have tape of that or the “up downs” he did as his “punishment”?
    That was high quality entertainment!

  • Ted

Lets git reaaaaady to FUUUUUUUkin fight on!

    – southern cal head coach –

    • Jack B

Let’s get ready to flop all over the place again! We’ve got a bunch of new little gutty coaches, including DeBong (free SUV) Foster (good for compliance), and The Chimp is divorced now so he can pay full attention to his hot seat. Face Plant Rosen’s been supposedly reborn and no reports of drunken ucla midnight jaywalkers lately. Thank God! We’ve got a new cheap-looking tin foil cracker jack box facility with the same old 80 yd fields.
