Here is an amazing color photo of Traveler and his owner, Richard Saukko, in 1965. Can you imagine trying this pose at a game today? I’m running the photo because there was a stir this week about whether Traveler is named after Robert E. Lee’s horse, which was Traveller (different spelling). Saukko’s wife said it was the horse’s name when Saukko bought it in 1958.
If you want to examine a real issue, look at how USC had an African-American as its first All-American (Brice Taylor) and then did not have another African-American player until around 1953. That’s injustice. And basketball was probably worse, which is shameful. This is what deserves more focus.
