Remembering 1992

I mentioned last week the 1967 team was honored at Salute to Troy. Several people at Salute to Troy have mentioned the 1992 team was also recognized and that only two players showed up. That’s a shame.

Which two showed up? Was Curtis Conway there?

    • Grammymb

      No

      • Michael Guarino

A USC First Team All American for the 1992 team being honored [not to mention, the current reigning Pac 12 Network Analyst] wasn’t even there?! What’s that all about?

What about Rob Johnson, Estrus Crayton, and Jonnie Morton? They played their hearts out in that 38-37 loss to f uucla but Rob came up short on the 2 point conversion pass or they would have tied for 1st in the Pac 10.

      • Michael Guarino

Rob looked good at the end of the game and got us in position to win it —-but that 2 point pass went into the dirt. I don’t know what the definition of “money player” is —-but that last throw wasn’t an example of it.

It looked like the f uuclan defender jumped the route on the 2 pointer, which happened at the end of another furious SC rally the next year too…

True. And I don’t want to leave the impression that I disagree with your assessment —– all the guys you mentioned absolutely “played their hearts out” in that game. Sure wish they got the result they earned.

Well when you have a 6- 5 – 1 season…..lose for the 10th straight time to notre dame and for the 2nd year in a row to ucla and then get blown out by Fresno State in a bowl no one wanted to go to …. The Freedom Bowl and finally the capper – very strong rumors your head coach is about to be given the old heave ho I think that tends to put the damper on anyone wanting to reminisce about the ‘good ole’ days’

  • Old Trojans never die

Maybe it was because they were embarrassed to have those funky helmet stickers.

  • marvienna

The worst part of that season was at the end when HC Larry Smith insulted every Trojan and fan everywhere by saying “Big names and logos don’t mean anything anymore” at the press conference where he was axed.

College sports more than pro sports thrive on traditions, icons and rituals. Smith made a mistake by implying that the USC brand was no longer meaningful.

Maybe that’s why no one wanted to remember the 1992 season.

Mike McGee – AD before Garrett – told Smith to pack his bags because he (Smith) was a goner and that he (McGee) was leaving as well. John Robinson was behind the scenes maneuvering in getting his old gig back and then some 6 years later when he was deservedly axed by Mike Garrett, there was all that hue and cry on how he was told.

      • Trojan96

Mike Garrett leaving a voice messsage saying your fired was definitely a low. Oh wait, then we had the Hackett era.

        • rusoviet

What do you think Robinson was doing behind the scene prior to Smith getting his well deserved ‘heave ho’?

  • tim chaney

bad year for all of Los Angeles. the riot, magic’s announcement the previous fall, all the sports teams bit bad.. not a memorable year in sports period.

  • Hubert Wilkins

More guys showed up for the ’91 team and they went 3-8.

  • Globehead

What did the honor – blowing a 14 point 4th quarter lead to a UCLA team that averaged 9 points a game?

    • marvgoux1

We were struck by lightning that game. Some 5th year transfer from UCSB named John Barnes and JJ Stokes had their coming out party at our expense. Still we had a chance to win but missed on the two pointer.

Goop’s no stranger to coming up short.
