A USC-Texas Heisman Story

If you missed this week’s podcast, you can find it here. I wanted to mention a story I told in the podcast about the Heisman Trophy ceremony that year. Reggie Bush won the award, of course. After, they brought the top 3 finalists to the press conference. I still remember how Texas QB Vince Young walked in and was visibly upset about the results.

The story goes that Young used it as motivation to win the Rose Bowl three weeks later. But here was my point: Why did Young think he might win? Did anyone at Texas care to tell him Bush was the overwhelming favorite? In fact, Bush received 784 first-place votes and Young received 79. Hello? Was Young in that much of a bubble? Probably.

  1. He was in Texas where football is religion.
He probably thought he could walk on water (like he walked in the end zone on this play).

    • john u realy embaras ucla alot when u write these things, the end zone is maid of grass and terf like the ressed of the feild, u realy arent that smart sense u think it is water, just stop embarasing ucla pleese! smdh!

    • He works for Burger World of Texas now as a shift manager..true story, hey is that you Vince ?

    • “I hope the USC-Texas game is a shootout and thrills the fans. But I’m a little tired of hearing about the 2006 game… I don’t see any reason to pump this game up like it has anything to do with the 2006 Rose Bowl.” – Scott Wolf… literally yesterday… and two ’06 Rose Bowl posts ago.

      • It is like Wolf has no idea where he is, when he is, what he is, or why he is. Perhaps Wolf and Young are intellectual buddies.

        • With SC winning and winning the right way, Scottie is spinning and doesn’t know he is constantly contradicting himself

  2. My favorite Vince Young story is when he scored his uniform number in the Wonderlic test. A score that low I’m guessing a lot of things in the world surprise him.

  3. I blame the refs for his whole season they missed everything around him and I’m making this up as I type like I’m a real writer, so stop reading and up vote me.

  4. Reggie Bush net worth: Reggie Bush is an American football player who has a net worth of $14 million. Born March 2, 1985 in Spring Valley, California, Bush played college football for USC (Los Angeles, California) and was the New Orleans Saints’ running back draft pick in 2006.

Vince Young net worth and salary: Vince Young is a former NFL player who has a net worth of negative $1.5 million. Vince Young was born on May 18, 1982 in Houston, Texas. He attended the University of Texas at Austin. He also is facing two different lawsuits from a company called Pro Player Funding related to a nearly $2 million loan that allegedly went unpaid.

    • and yet, Vince is a revered legend in the state of Tex.

      Reggie is reviled and banished.

          • i’ll stack Rosen’s smarts against the Roto Rooters’ Son any day of the week.

            #Flusssssssssh

          • Lol. I gotta say, as lame as it is with you constantly on a rival’s blog, you do make me laugh. It’s scary, I know. The Roto Rooter thing got me. You know waaaay too much for a rival fan. THAT’S scarier.

          • Oscar Wilde drank himself to death like Just Squats is trying to do. You should reach out to a fellow bruin Troll in distress.

          • English prisons did little for Oscar Wilde’s already frail health and probably left him so weakened that, by the time he left England, he was a dead man walking—although he did turn to alcohol in his last, lonely years. But whatever the cause of his death, he was a great essayist, clever playwright, sensitive author of children’s fairy tales and world renown wit. Owns shouldn’t be mentioned in the same sentence as Mister Wilde.

          • I figured alcoholism was a less harsh diagnosis than syphilitic meningitis, which some authorities claim to be Wilde’s cause of death. He was an amazing character. So many literary and poetic types seem ridiculously obsessed with the bottle, often directly leading to their early demise.

          • I hear ya, Jack. Just looking out for the reputation of an old “friend” — who gave the world “De Profundis”, “The Picture of Dorian Gray” and “The Selfish Giant.”
            #FightOn!

          • He was a bonafide genius. So many great Wilde quotes:

“I like men who have a future and women who have a past.”

        • Young borrowed 2 mil and welched on the payment? Where’s that USC collapsing D when you need it?

      • That’s because it’s Texas. Only two places worth living there. Austin and Dallas. Texas ranks 43rd in education. What do a bunch of ignorant people know about anything. Let alone how to spell revered.

Texas has the eighth highest adult obesity rate in the nation, according to The State of Obesity: Better Policies for a Healthier America released August 2017. Texas’s adult obesity rate is currently 33.7 percent, up from 21.7 percent in 2000 and from 10.7 percent in 1990. Also obesity leads to diabetes. The South is the leader here.
So we have a bunch of uneducated, obese diabetic slobs revering someone. Give me a break!

  5. hey wolfman, remember Reggie’s Money Quote after the Rose Bowl???

“well…they can never take these wins from us……”

WRONG!!! they took the wins, Reggie, and the Heisman too!!!

    HAWR-HAWR!!!!

    #UltimateBurn

  6. No sh** he was angry about losing the award..
Vince Young begged like a street rat for them to over turn the award to him.

    LOL!!!!!!
That sounds like a JMeth move.

    • Hey Sam, sorry took me a while to get back to you…to see carmen Jackson’s tweets, go on twitter and search jackthejiant..it will show stuff between him and herbie as well as another interview regarding his recruiting..

  7. Young exemplifies the descriptor “dumb jock”. The guy went through al of his millions in a year and had to move in with his parents. Pick an outrageous extravagance and that’s what old Vince did with his money. What a dope!

    • Sounds like Mike Tyson but Tyson was heavy weight champ, knocking contenders out for a living. Tyson lived some unbelievable stories; the only story I remember from Young is a 3am stripper joint fight caught on a security cam. Weak sauce

  8. Losing the Heisman was great motivation for Vince to put on his best performance ever. But USC was still the better team that season.
