What About The Two Players Mentioned In Federal Case?

So it looks like Tony Bland’s USC coaching career is probably over. But what is the status of the two players whose families that Bland allegedly facilitated $9,000 for? This is the big question as the first basketball practice approaches.

It looks like it’s Melton and O’Bannon. Melton probably will not play this year. O’Bannon will never suit up for an NCAA game. Both might as well start looking at playing overseas for a year or two.

    • SCgrad12

All they have to do is deny, deny, deny, unless there is a paper trail.

      • Independent_George

There is a cash trail, with cash provided by the government, cash with serial numbers that the government records before giving it away.

        • SCgrad12

          Yahtzee!

          • Gabby

            Bingo!

      • Independent_George

In any event, I doubt that USC is going to risk further damage by letting either player play this year.

      • Jack B

We all know it’s true. Best that USC just start bending over, which we refused to do in football to the detriment of our football program for a decade.

Hopefully, we learned who we are really up against, and if this turns into an NCAA matter, as in all likelihood it will, I hope we have the good sense to marginally self-penalize, disassociate from Bland for good and come up with any mitigating factors ASAP.

I don’t think the “They’re just jealous,” excuse has any legs on this one.

        • Independent_George

The hired Freeh, which will help because for whatever his faults, the NCAA respects him. Plus Dave Roberts, who built USC’s compliance office, is now on the COI.

Mitigating factors are that Bland wasn’t involved until June/July of this year; that no games have been played with the accused players, that one of the informants are quoted as saying, on tape, that they don’t go after head coaches because they make too much money and it’s too risky for them.

Aggravating factors include Bland’s comment that he had the “opportunity” to do this before.

        • marvgoux1

USC is all about football. I love that we are back on top and don’t want anything to take away from the good vibes we have going.

It would be nice to be good in mens hoops but it isn’t worth fighting for and getting the NCAA on our case again. Nikias and Swann need to call a meeting and need to get ahead of this and start firing anyone who knew or should have known.

          • Jack B

            Right On!

        • Pasadena Trojan

Pull The Penn St. Defense. Tell them that USC will sue them for everything they have if they go after USC.

      • Fred Sampson

I’m sure there’s an electronic, communication trail

        • CORTEZ THE KILLER

They have Bland on videotape, which I’m sure has audio, he’s done

          • Fred Sampson

Greed will get you every time, because I’m sure Bland’s salary was at least $300, 000

          • Independent_George

He’s never coaching in college again. It’s side hustles on the AAU circuit and pushing subprime loans for him.

          • JustOwns

Recently, in a BB column, it was stated that AAU coaches love Andyain’twinning, but not Steve Alford.

    • Bernie

Marcellus Willey just told this story today on ESPN. He was at dinner and ran into an assistant coach in the restroom. The coach told him he was hosting a recruit and his family. Marcellus was curious and wanted to see the recruit. The assistant coach told him the family wanted 180. Marcellus thought he meant to change things for the kid. But the assistant said no, they want $180,000. Marcellus said he saw the recruit who was a very tall skinny kid with an Afro.

      • Pasadena Trojan

Willey, I have no respect for. The dude blows smoke out of his rear end. He is always disrespecting the Trojans. He is on USC’s Flag Ship Station and he never talks about them except to rag on them. he can stick it in his ear. I need proof for the comment.

Wolf, please get us an update from one of your moles at the donut hole

The FBI alleges that Bland accepted a $13,000 bribe Christian Dawkins and Munish Sood in exchange for his asserting his influence over USC basketball players, funneling them to Dawkins and Sood for their business management and financial advisory services.

“I can definitely mold the players and put them in the lap of you guys,” Bland said at one point, according to the FBI.

Bland is also accused of arranging for Dawkins and Sood to “take care of” a pair of Trojan players, who were unnamed but described as a “rising freshman” and a “rising sophomore” on the current team. As a result, payments of $4,000 and $5,000 were allegedly funneled to the players’ families, according to the FBI.

    • CORTEZ THE KILLER

This is going to get ugly for everyone involved

    • Independent_George

      Most likely Melton and O’Bannon.

      • Fred Sampson

        That’s what I was thinking

        • Independent_George

Ironic if Ed was the family member to accept the money. Double ironic (he is the name plaintiff in the likeness case against the NCAA, and he’s a former Bruin).

          • 88 Straight

It may not be O’Bannon. You would think that Charles Sr. and Ed would already have plenty of access to money under the table without needing Tony Bland. That part makes little sense to me, along with the small amount of money.

          • JustOwns

88, the bozo’s just want to tar and feather UCLA with their Barney Fife cheating.

  • CORTEZ THE KILLER

Enfield better not have known about this or he’s on his way out as well.

And if Swann had any reservations about him to begin with, this will slam that door.

    • JustOwns

      The dunce reveals the obvious.

    • marvgoux1

How would he not know? No wonder the team recruiting improved so much that we are a #8 preseason pick. It seemed too good to be true. At least Swann has deniability. Andy wasn’t his hire.

      • CrouchingBruin

I would think that it’s possible for Enfield not to know. Bland was making $300K, so he was probably paying the athletes out of his own pocket. He probably saw it as an investment, since it would only strengthen his reputation as a top notch recruiter, and it would make him more attractive to elite basketball programs.

        • JustOwns

Sammy was extremely impressed, in fact, he repeatedly boasted that Andyain’twinning had recruited the #1, 2 or 3 2018 BB class.

        • Pasadena Trojan

Disagree about paying out of his pocket. The money was supplied by Addidas and given to Bland. It would make no sense for Bland to pay out of his pocket. Bland was the middle man and he got a cut of the money as well.

          • CrouchingBruin

True that. But I don’t think Enfield would have necessarily known about Bland’s dealings. I don’t know what kind of personal relationship they had, but if I were Bland, I’d worry that the coach would either shut me down, fire me, or worse, turn me into the NCAA.

  • Brutus Beefcake

that’s easy, wolfman! both will be barred from playing at SC!

Gilbert was going to the Grand Jury to sing like a bird and had a heart attack and died on the steps. he was going to sing how he supplied Johnny Cheetin’ Wooden’s players money, abortions for the knocked up girlfriends, which were illegal at the time, apts, cars, clothes, and more money. Also, pot for Walton.

Brutus, Chuck, or the evil personality John Lithgow played years back. You act like everything Ucla does is on the books or clean.

Just remember how ucla delivered Darnay and are dominating now at 2-2.

Don’t get to comfortable. I’m sure daddy’s gonna slip up in a dice game soon an he’ll be in the bruin locker begging for Darnay to get him out of another jam.

      #i wouldn’t talk

      • JustOwns

Sammy: FOS 24/7. What’s Darnay got to do with your crummy bozo u BB program.

Besides, your rate of correct prognostication is dismal. No Billy Preston, no Bagley, and of course bozo u failed to shock the world in Tixas Stadium, losing 52 – 6.

As usual Sammy, off point with both feet deep in your mouth.

And BTW, I’m still waiting for an explaination of what UCLA ‘s Darnay had to do with Andyain’twinning’s two-bit, BB program.

Can’t wait to see Billy Preston in a bozo uni.

        • Pasadena Trojan

His dad took money from ugly. That is why Darnay is playing at ugly.

    • marvgoux1

Look who is back. You sure recovered quick from that Stanford massacre.

    • Pasadena Trojan

      Brute,
You better hope they don’t the FBI goes after the history of Johnny Cheetin’ Wooden and Sam Gilbert.

      • Brutus Beefcake

        *yawn*

  • Rock2112

The two players were victims until their family took money. Since I have a hard time believing the players didn’t know their families were on the take, doing that makes them co-conspirators and it’s hard to feel sorry for them when they are shown the door (imminently). This is age old stuff all over but they got caught with their hands in the cookie jar.

  • Paul Muad’dib

Are you telling me two teenage students illegally obtained $9000!!!??? Call the FBI !!!!!!!!!!!

    • marvgoux1

      Those troubled teens!

  • Old Trojans never die

Here’s where it gets weird the FBI nabbed 4 assistant basketball coaches. Then they said they,(the coaches) are all coaches with top tier basketball programs. So could it be when they set up the sting they were looking for another team in town? They knew it was a school with letters in it’s name but didn’t know which one. My mom made that mistake when she moved to Calif .during World War II. After her first semester she transferred from Ucla to USC.

    • Independent_George

      Short answer: No.

  • Gabby

People get greedy and lose their minds over money

  • 88 Straight

Risking your coaching career and the future of 2 kids for $4-5k apiece? Crazy stuff. Chump change.

    • Peaceful Warrior

Especially when your making a million a year in salary plus other incentives.

      • 88 Straight

Stupid on multiple levels. I would guess that Coach Andy will utilize some plausible deniability. He may get one pass. Pitino is trying that for a 2nd time in less than a year. That sleazeball should retire before he gets run out. The AD at Louisville should be gone as well. $100k is serious $.

        • marvgoux1

Remember when f uucla was about to hire him to replace Lavs?

          • 88 Straight

I remember and thought it was a great idea at the time. Now, not so much. He’s just a slimeball. UCLA hasn’t had a great track record in hiring BB coaches and even worse in FB. This story will end up being HUGE!! The entire landscape of college basketball may change and that could be a good thing. If it turns out UCLA is part of it, so be it. Clean it up.
