USC Morning Buzz: It’s A Rare Day When Football/Basketball In News

Southern California's Deontay Burnett (80) is tackled by California's Camryn Bynum during the second half of an NCAA college football game Saturday, Sept. 23, 2017, in Berkeley, Calif. (AP Photo/Ben Margot)Wide receiver Deontay Burnett is obviously key to USC defeating Washington State. I’m told he separated his shoulder. The key is what grade is the separation. If it is not a severe separation, Burnett could conceivably play, as Clay Helton said Tuesday night.

Meanwhile, here’s my story on Tony Bland’s arrest in Tampa. Bland makes more than $350,000 per year so it wasn’t like he needed the $13,000 bribe that will likely end his coaching career. Then again, maybe this is the tip of the iceberg.

  1. It isn’t just Helton saying Burnett should be able to go Friday. Kaufman (A reporter) spoke to the trainer. I think it’s what is called investigating. But Scott is so happy with his scoop of poop he’ll be Rita Skeeter by the end of the week.

  2. $13,000 here, $13,000 there and it all adds up. Sad to see right when the team is ready for a breakthrough last seen in 1954.

  3. It seems like every team is out to knock our guys out because we’re playing with the bull’s eye on our back this season! Without any byes, injuries will be a huge factor for our success or failure for the rest of the season.

  4. Please do not play Burnett. This has “making the injury worse” all over it. We need him much more in November than we do now. We can recover from a loss.

It would help if we knew the status of D Imatorbhebhe, S Mitchell, and M Pittman. If we just assume those guys aren’t playing, then this is game where Joseph Lewis, Tyler Vaughns, and Velus Jones need to step. Darnold will give them the chance. Knowing that Burnett cannot play may help actually, in preparing them mentally to be locked in. Start off throwing to them in easy scenarios -check down to get to one of them when WSU is in obvious soft zone coverage – just to get them a little on short routes.

This game is probably going to be a shoot out. WSU is going to stack the box, if they’re smart, and force SC to pass. Now would be the time for Tyler Vaughns to show his stuff, and to test a defense deep with Lewis and Jones.

      • Like to see Lewis and Grimes get some playing time on Friday. We need to get a better look at what’s been resting in the stable

  5. So USC basketball is going to be without an assistant coach and possibly a couple of players. Will this bring the program down? It has been obvious for years college basketball is the most corrupted sport in college, perhaps the FBI is going level the playing field.

  6. Obviously, Bland is a bonehead. Other guys were getting $100k, and consider that Bland negotiated his $13k against a government informant that would have LOVED to jack the payment up as high as possible to make the case even better!

    • More: Government Agent WANTED to make it $13 million —-but Bland kept negotiating until he got it down to $13 thousand…..

  7. interesting that SC for years cried that the Reggie matter should not count against SC cause “no one from the university knew”…..well that was always a crock (#McNair) but in any case now the hammer is gonna come down HARD!! the NCAA will feel enormous pressure to make an example of these schools to save the reputation of its cash cow (march madness brings in more cash than the football playoffs) .

and no one will be hit harder than the schools with a recent history of cheating!!!

    Uh-OH! Spaghetti-O!!!!!

  8. Are we looking at a possible “lack of institutional control” infraction?
Could that be the reason Swann immediately hired a third party to investigate

  9. Bland’s going down big and forever. He should just sing like a super canary and name a few dozen names that he knows all about. Cut his deal, become an even greater weather map than the Feds already have and hand the enormity of this case to them on a silver platter: shoe companies and the men in charge, agents, players and families on the take, corrupt coaches and administrators, et al. So many hands in the pot. This is gonna be so huge and fun!

SC will still get nicked pretty hard I think, but less so if we co-op and bend over to the max. Forget standing up for whatever we think excuses Dirt Bag Bland being on our team. There’s hundreds of others just like him in the college game. Expose ’em all.

Bland’s best bet now is to co-author the in-depth exposure book of all-time. He shouldn’t be allowed to coach in college again for at least 5 years. These corrupt coaches in the money chain are just too much. Glad they have him on tape so he has nil wiggle room.

I really never thought Enfield was the cheating-type, nor the stupid-type for that matter, so it will be interesting to see how this all shakes out for him.

    • They all cheat and are dirty. Nature of the business. However, head coaches are also experts in maintains plausible deniability (or else they’ll go down hard).

  10. Tee Martin is both OC and WR coach. Maybe the burden of handling both roles is catching up.

I’ve never been a fan of Martin as I think he is too much like Lane and Sark. If he doesn’t move on after the season, then at least give the WR coaching spot to someone else so someone can focus on the WR’s exclusively.
