Spread The Blame

USC offensive coordinator Tee Martin is justifiably being criticized this week for the playcalling. But it’s worth mentioning USC coach Clay Helton also calls plays.

  1. Somebody tell me what Ty Helton does. Wasn’t he some offensive wiz at Western Kentucky? What role does he have in the offense/play-calling?

  2. Dude, we all get it, Your main focus since Friday night has been coaching or lack of it. This is turning into an OCD thing with you. Let me remind you in case you forgot, there is a game Saturday afternoon against Oregon St.

  3. On the players: Won’t really know how talented they are (or aren’t)until 3 years after they graduate. On the coaches: The only USC Coaches that have won National Titles in my lifetime all went on to lead NFL teams to at least a Conference Title Game Appearance (McKay, Robinson & Carroll). Does Helton have that in him?

        • Funny! Post of the day so far. Cracks me up!

Just thinking of SW as the KILLER is brutal.

          • We have to congratulate killer. He’s worked extremely hard to earn that comparison given the lack of gray matter

          • What’s funny is you think WSU is a solid team.

And for the second year in a row you’ve touted Gomer as a fine coach only to throw him under the bus after a loss.

And keep stalking me Gabby, I blocked you long ago, rave on you brain dead rah rah

          • Helton is a good coach. He’s just not a great coach and USC needs one of those guys again if we want to make the CFB PO.

Gabby’s statement that you are the “new version” of SW was a classic, especially since you compared Helton to Tollner. The truth hurts obviously. So now Gabby’s suddenly a stalker? Funny stuff. I guess “blocking” doesn’t work, huh?

    • He isn’t in that league, and probably never will be. He’s more like in the league of Hackett, Smith, Tollner, and Robinson II.

  4. Flow: Helton’s confirmed this to you? Calling plays as a HC and suggesting plays to your OC are two totally different things.

        • Gabby love ya but he’s right, Helton and company pretty much have no business in their positions. They suck at it and they got their by default, since we didn’t want to do an actual coaching search.

          • Interesting! So, last season when they reeled off 9 in a row were these your same thoughts……be real!

          • Yeah it was. That was a team being pulled through on talent against what was a trash PAC last year by everyone’s account. ND was trash too, no one would argue that. You’d have to be blind if you thought that was a team playing well. Do you really think that this team would be 5-1 if it wasn’t playing this schedule??? LOL Do you think W Michigan was really a great team we were lucky to scrape by on??? lool Do you???

  5. Could SW be more vague here? Helton could have called 2, 20 or 200 plays per this classic Wolf info bit. Worthless.

Every college HC in the country probably makes a call here and there, or a choice between 2, or a suggestion which is always followed.

The problem is Tee, not Helton here. Helton’s got his own issues but there has never been an indication his incidental play calling is one of them.

  6. I’m just amazed at the play calling when it’s 4th, and 1, or 4th and goal, not once this season, have they ever tried a bootleg, or quarterback sneak. And that alone is unbelievable, especially with the amount of times they failed to convert the ball in those situations.

    • You know the reason for it, don’t you? As a genuinely honest man, CH is way above cheating his opponents with a bootleg in anything. lol.

  7. If USC barely get by OSU and still can’t score in the red-zone we can kiss this season goodbye. SC offense has to put up at least 50 points to impress the playoff committee they belong. Swann is taking note you better believe it.

  8. Helton called the 86 yard run and Sams two bootlegs. Great calls. Martin called all the plays with first and goal at the 3.

  9. Clay Helton was not a good play caller when he was under Kiffin or Sark.. The offense was predictable then and it is now.. USC offense lacked offensive adjustments then and it does now..
Martin holds fault, but he is learning from Helton..
